Hi Sonja,

I can tell you that a Michael AYNSLEY occupation Miner died Intestate and that his probate is held at Archives NZ Christchurch office, their ref: CAIF CH 300 960.

There's a reference to a Michael AYNSLEY in the book 'Who's Who' 1964 only, p.103.

A Michael AYNSLEY was granted a Goldmining licence. See NZ Government Gazette 1866, p.273.

Regards, riley

Possibly since he was a gold miner he was in Australia first?

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ mentions a Charles Grant Aynsley in 1886 (a boy, having broken into the house of Edward Loughnane at Greenstone and stolen a shilling's-worth of cooked beef, bread, and sugar. A resident of Barrytown promised to take the boy under his charge, and the case was dismissed).

In 1899 a young man named Aynsley, 'of the Greenstone' died at Reefton hospital.

In 1901 a Mr H. Aynsley, chief steward of the Haupiri, was promoted to the Takapuna - could be another son?

If you search the West Coast Times at Papers Past for Aynsley you can find a few other things. A lot of the records will be for the Murray-Aynsley family, though.  It does show that in 1866 and 1868 he was resident in Ross, in 1866 as a shareholder in the Prince of Wales Gold Mining Company.

http://digital-library.canterbury.ac.nz/awweb/awarchive?item=232641&type=meta
 - mention of a Mary Aynsley who was born in Westland and became a nun.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ourstuff/BarmaidsA-C.htm
 - Caroline Eva Aynsley, registered as a barmaid in 1910 in Westport.

I think the reference to Michael Aynsley in the Who's Who is for Michael Connelly's entry (b. 1887, m. 1912 Agnes, daughter of Michael Aynsley).  It does say he was educated in Catholic and State schools - was this family Catholic? That would complicate looking for them in England.

Hi Sonja

What ages were listed for the children on the death cert, as this will narrow down the birth years?

1881 Electoral Roll:
Michael AYNSLEY
Electorate: Greymouth
Address: Dukes Terrace
Occupation: Miner

1893 Electoral Roll:
Michael AYNSLEY
Electorate: Grey
Address: Greenstone
Occupation: Miner

Justina AYNSLEY
Electorate: Grey
Address: Greenstone
Occupation: Domestic Duties

This might be a relation - couldn't be their son unless he was born before they were married - or from a previous marriage....
Charles James AYNSLEY
Electorate: Grey
Address: Greymouth
Occupation: Labourer

Hi Sonja

Have you contacted the reasearcher who has a "tree" for Ellen AYNSLEY (TINDALE) at worldconnect ?

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com

Mention is made there that Ellen produced a "small booklet of her memoirs"  ... it also refers to "her sisters" (though not by name).

It may be too, (and perhaps given that the AYNSLEY's were a very large family), that they are documented in records held by West Coast museums?

Perhaps you could try -

>    History House (via Grey District Council)

  http://www.greydc.govt.nz

>    West Coast Historical Museum (at Hokitika)

  email:     hokimuseum@xtra.co.nz

Good luck with your search.
