Hi everyone
I'm new to this website. Is there anyone out there who has regular access to Derbyshire Records Office as I am trying to find my great great great grandfather's birth 1806 Derby, he was the son of an army officer and his name was Henry Armstrong. I regularly go to Flintshire, Denbighshire and Cheshire records office and am a member of ancestry so am happy to return the favour
thanks

Hi Catmad,
Welcome to rootschat.
Thought you might find this site useful, as you're researching Derbyshire - so much information on there (including some Armstrong wills):
www.wirksworth.org.uk
When I first started my research I contacted the Derbyshire Record Office and found them extremely helpful when I explained I lived some distance away - I'm sure you will also find a similar response.
Good luck - hope you find the site useful.
Kind regards,
Paulene :)

Hi Catmad,
Glad you find it useful. :)
Thought you might like this one, too - in case you establish where the family came from:
www.picturethepast.org.uk
If you're anything like me you like to get the whole picture, not just the names, etc.
Hoping my Adams lot from the Black Country might lead me back to Wales- who knows!!!
Take care,
Paulene :)
Let us know how you're getting on with the Armstrongs. I have Armstrongs that feature in my tree, but their origins are the Swainby area of Yorkshire (lots of Armstrongs in Yorks).

Thanks very much. Yes you're correct I do like to get an idea of the whole picture. My gt gt gt grandfather was born in Derby the son of an army officer so I am trying to find out if any militia were stationed there, or if the family were just passing through in 1806.
If you would like any information about North Wales then let me know as I regularly go to Flintshire Records Office which also holds a lot of info for Denbighshire
best wishes

Hi, Cat,
I'm replying to your private message re: Birkenhead Armstrongs, because I haven't figured out how else to do it! ??? It doesn't look likely there's any connection: completely wrong social class and all my Armstrongs lived in Liverpool itself after arriving from Ireland.
cheers,
Chris.

Thanks for replying Chris. It's a pity there's no connection

Hello catmad
In case you haven't looked at any census returns, I've checked the 1841 to 1881 and he would seem to be on the '51, '61 and '71 in Liverpool. Same address on all 3, but not on the 1881 so probably died.
If you don't have access to any census, just let me know and I'll post the details (not all of it because he was the head of a school and all the pupils and teachers are there as well).

Hi Mike
Thanks for this, yes he died in 1880 in Farndon Chester. I have all the census information for him thanks, and am really trying to track down what happened to his sons as one of them was left the family bible but the will doesn't stipulate which one. The one I am having trouble with is the descendents of his son Alexander Allinson Armstrong born c 1840 who moved back to Liverpool/Birkenhead in the 1890s.

Hi catmad
Do you know who Alexander's descendents were?.
From what I've found there were 3 sons & 2 daughters and he's living with one on the 1911 census.

Hi Mike
Alexander's parents were Dr Henry Armstrong (1805-1880) and Ellen Woolfall (1809-1871). Henry was born in Derby the son of an Army Officer called Thomas Armstrong and Ellen was from Liverpool.
I think that Henry was sent to school in Liverpool, as he worked at Picton's Academy for a while and then went to the Isle of Man where 2 of his children were born. When he returned he traded as an Innkeeper for a while in the 1840s and then just before the 1851 census formed a school in Farndon Chester called Farndon Hall. He was well respected in the village and the children who attended wrote to my g grandmother after Henry died to say how much they had enjoyed their time at school.
He had 6 sons and 2 daughters. Only 2 of his sons survived him, Alexander and Robert and Henry's will stipulated that they should decide between themselves who should have the family bible. I am on its quest but don't know which son it went to. Alexander moved to Liverpool/Birkenhead and Robert to London, but only Alexander had male offspring who then produced sons - Robert's sons only had daughters.
It seems possible that I have confused Alexander's sons marriages at some point and would dearly like to find out what happened to that side of the family.
best wishes
