Title: 1891 and possibly 1901 census look up please
Post by: KA on Saturday 21 June 08 14:10 BST (UK)
Can anybody see this family in 1891?  Here they are in 1881:

(Michael McNeilis 44, Stableman, Unempl, b. Ireland)
Mary McNeilis 42, b. Ireland
Charles McNeilis 21
Sarah McNeilis 18
Catherine McNeilis 17
James McNeilis 16
Mary McNeilis 14
Agnes McNeilis 12
Michael McNeilis 10
Elizabeth McNeilis 5
William McNeilis 2

The husband, Michael died in 1890.  But can wife Mary and any of the children be spotted?  Most probably in Glasgow.

Wife, Mary, dies in 1907, so if she can be spotted on the 1901 I would be very grateful for a look up also.

Regards.

Ellen,

That's what I thought, but I've checked it through, and they are not the correct family ::)

William marries a Christina in 1900, and in 1901 appears to be in England.

I've come to a bit of a grinding halt on this lot.  So am hoping a sighting of them in 1891 might help.

Regards

Sorry, KA, was waiting for Ellen as she was doing this search

Yes, that's definitely my lot ;D

I'm scrabbling through all my info here, as the 'licensed broker' has come up before and I can't remember where.

Many thanks for that.

If anyone can spot Mary in 1901 I would be pleased to know.

Kind regards

KA

This is the only one I can see as well

Are you absolutely sure that your William married a Christina? Have you verified this?

I am a bit worried that he is 'missing' on the 1901.

Perhaps he was 'norty' ;D ;D ;D

Hi Folks

This was bugging me so I've checked the marraiges on SP so we know exactly what we're looking for....

1. William McNeillis, the Oil Cake Dresser married Mary Walls @ Blythswood, Glasgow 31 Dec 1900, age 25. His parents were  John McNeillis, Chemical Work Labourer (deceased) and Mary ms Docherty. Living at that time at 6 Swan Street.

2. William McNeillis, age 20, Iron Dresser, married Christina Stephen a Power Loom Weaver 29 Dec 1900 @ Milton, Glasgow. His parents were Michael McNeillis, Coach Builder (deceased) and Mary ms Murray. Both William and Christina were at the time living at 42 Maitland Street, Glasgow.

What would you have given for the chances of two William McNeillises marrying within 2 days of each other  >:(

Right, I'm off again to see if I can find them.  Please all feel free to beat me to it - its bugging me!!!

Cheers

Ellen.

Right, now we're getting somewhere - but not the whole story!

William's wife Christina is at 42 Maitland (ancestry has transcribed as Mailland) Street on the 1901. she is transcibed as McNeillias.

She is head of household, age 23, a Jute Spinner, b. Carycastle (?) with

Alexandria McNeillias, daur, 2, Glasgow
Mary McNeillias, daur, 3 mos, Glasgow
plus 3 of Christinas sisters, Alexandria Stephens, 21, Catherine, 19 and Jane 17
and 2 visitors Marion Longmuir and Rose McLatchin both 18.

Got to go out for few hours, but will look back to see if anyone has found William!

Cheers

Ellen.

Ha,ha so she isn't in England - that fooled me for a few seconds.

She is in Scotland and we can't check the image for her marital status - very annoying - do you have any credits?

Both William and his mum may be deceased though William is a bit young :(

Nice to see someone in full possession of the facts,Ellen ;)

First of all, many thanks for all this help.  It is all so kind of you.

Just to fill you in a bit more, I think William may have been in Northumberland in 1901.  One turns up on the census as a visitor with a mining family.  The age is wrong, but this may be him. And it would fit with other information I have found out.  ie. Christina marries again in 1905.  She states 'spinster' on this second marriage, alters her age a bit, and gives her grandparents names as her parents.  I am thinking that William deserted her, maybe a divorce followed - but maybe not.  William dies in 1916.

So, maybe another William McNeillis can be found in Scotland, maybe not.  Can his mother Mary be sighted at all?

Also, can anybody advise how I might find out about divorces during this period.  I would not have thought they were that common.

Regards

KA

Is this the chap with the 'Humbles' ?

Age is  definitely 38 but it does look good apart from that.

I think they are a bit dodgy after all  ;)

That's the one.
Dodgy isn't the word for it! ;D

The 2 year old Alexina that is with Christina on the 1901 has the words 'illegitimate' on her birth cert.  And it appears William didn't stick around long after his marriage and birth of second daughter, Mary.  I suppose he could still be in Scotland, but ensuring he is unfindable, not necessarily by the census, but by his wife - but it equates to the same thing.  I get the feeling he didn't easily settle to family life! ;)

His mother, Mary died in 1907.  On the death cert the surname is Manelis - but this is one of the many guises the McNeillis surname appears as.  She died 10 Feb 1907  at 2 Parsonage Lane, Glasgow.  This is the St Rollox area, which also has the other Mary McNeillis, who isn't mine - which just adds to the confusion. :-\

I would like to make contact with you regarding this strange name, I have Manillis and Moneillis, looking for a woman
named Margaret Moneillis with parents Anthony Manillis and Ellen Brawman?.
Margaret married Alexander Scobie in Scotland, got some info on the Scobie, traces back to Antrim, Ireland, but it is this surname that is eluding me to tracing Margaret and her family.
