Title: At a Standstill!!!!
Post by: brycewj on Saturday 21 June 08 01:24 BST (UK)
Hi,

I've posted this on another subject but thought I'd give it another try on the Derry and Renfrewshire boards.

I'm looking for any information or any tips on my GGF:

Henry BRYCE/BRYCELAND/BRIESLAND/BRISLAND/BRESLAND/BRESLIN etc.
born abt 1813, married to Catherine LYNCH, born abt 1817.  Henry has been mentioned as a "horse dealer" and a labourer on several documents, but I've had no luck with any BMD's for him.  The Genealogy Center did find a possible, i.e. Henry Briesland who died 28 April 1870 in Culmore from a "Visitation of God"!

Henry & Catherine had four children: Mary (abt 1847), James (abt 1850), Rose Ann (abt 1853), and William (abt 1857).
Believe the family came from the Derry-Donegal border region ( Ballynagard, Kilderry, Culmore have been mentioned) but the family emigrated at some point to Greenock, Scotland. Catherine died there in 1886 as did the children; Mary 1897, James 1902, Rose Ann 1904, and William 1904, my GF.

Believe Rose Ann married a John Gallagher and they had a son, Henry, in 1880, baptised in St. Patrick's RC, Parish of Iskaheen, Diocese of Derry.
Rose Ann's maiden name was listed as BRESLIN and the parents townland was listed as Greenock. The sponsors were John & Hannah CLERY.

NB. Various surnames have been used on various documents, sometimes, even on the same document, e.g. on Rose Ann's Marriage Certificate, her maiden name is spelled Briesland, while her father's name is spelled as Bresland.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Elaine & Ev,

Thanks for that quick responses!

Ev, I have this census info already.  I also have the birth cert. of young Henry.  He was born in the townland of Ballynagard, District of Kilderry,  Counties of Derry & Donegal,  father: John Gallagher, mother: Rose Anne formerly Breisland.
I assume on the census that Catherine and James are Rose Ann's mother & brother respectively.

Elaine, here's what I have on death certs.

Catherine BRYCELAND nee Lynch, 11 Cowgate, died 1886. (From Search on Scotlands People)

Mary BRYCE Fleming Gallacher, 22 Market St., died 26 Aug 1897.  parents: Henry Brisland, Labourer (deceased) & Catherine ms Lynch

James BRYCE, 16 Market St., died 21 Mar 1902 parents: Henry Bryce, General Dealer (deceased) & Catherine Bryce ms Lynch (deceased)

Rose Ann BRYCE/ Fleming/ Gallagher, 16 Market St. died 11 April, 1904.  (I can't find this cert. so I don't have spelling of parents surname).

William BRYCE, 4 Dalrymple St. 8 July 1904 parents: Henry Bryce, Horse Dealer & Catherine ms Lynch

Thanks again to the both of you!

Bill

sorry Bill
neither of the families know anything about Henry
only the one in their family
he was not called after anyone in particular
and was born in the 40's
I will keep looking though as I hate loose ends

Good morning I have just recently started to reseach my family tree on searching for family.  I had got as far as Hugh and Mary Gallacher my Mothers great grandfather, there children were called James, Rose Anne and Catherine (Kate) living in Greenock i census 1891 and 1901.  Mary was missing in the 1901 census.  to cut to the point I did a search on google and found this message fro yourself at a standstill I noticed that the names were very similar I have realised now that Hugh's wife is Mary Fleming mother Catherine Brisland and father Henry Brisland.  Thanks for helping me unknowingly.  If you would like to view my tree or if I can help you are very welcome.

Best wishes from Rosemary Scotland.

Hi Rosemary,

Great to hear from you!  You're right, the names you mentioned do seem to coincide between our families.

I would like to view you family tree.  I also wonder if you know when & where Henry Brisland was born (we think County Derry) and died.  I also wonder if you have any photos of Mary or Hugh.  All our family pictures were destroyed in the Blitz.   I've been told that it's unsafe to post my email address here, so you should send me a PM (i.e. a personal message).  The "Help" section will tell you how.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers for now,

Bill

PS I see I've made a mistake in my message of 21 June 08 above.  Rose Ann BRYCE/Fleming/Gallagher should read Rose Ann BRYCE/Milne/Gallagher.
