Title: Michael Kelly - where do I look
Post by: mbee on Thursday 19 June 08 19:20 BST (UK)
I have found an IGI entry for Michael Kelly birth 1831 Irvilloughter, Galway.  I am not certain yet whether this is my ancestor due to name changes and date changes and I am clutching at straws rather.  Is there anywhere else I can look for this person and possible siblings, any suggestions gratefully received, mbee

Is the IGI entry submitted or extracted? If extracted record it most likely came from a church baptismal record.

Hi, thanks for reply - message says record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS church, no additional information available.  Ancestral file may list the same family and the submitter, Cheers mbee

I noted Irvilloughter is a townland in the parish of Ahascragh Co Galway. Is that correct?

Couldn`t find a Michael Kelly birth for your date on www.brsgenealogy.com. It is worth looking at that site though for BDMs that may prove relevant to your search-just remember to click on Galway East on the map as there`s a separate part of that site dealing with galway west. Also if you wish to view a transcription you`ll have to pay 5 euro-even if the record turns out to be the wrong ancestor.

Griffith Valuations were taken in that part of Ireland in the 1850s. On www.failteromhat.com there are two Michael Kellys for Ahascragh-though not Irvilloughter.

Kelly           Michael                   Cloncannon (Dillon)         Ahascragh     Galway
Kelly           Michael                   Kilglass                    Ahascragh     Galway

The 1901 census on www.leitrim-roscommon.com also shows a Michael Kelly ages 82 (a lot of them guessed their age though) with his wife Bridget and family living in Ahascragh.

Yes, clutching at straws indeed but maybe you`ll find the above websites helpful for your research anyhow.

Hi, I have a grandmother named Catherine Kelly from Ahascragh. Her parents were Michael Kelly and Ann Leonard.  I have her birth certificate. Perhaps you are related. I know that she had three brothers and two sisters. Some who came to the USA and some who stayed behind.

Yes - My family are 'Kelly's' from Ahascragh, Ballinsloe, Cloncannon area. My grandmother was Kate Kelly and her parents were Michael Kelly & Ann Leonard Kelly. That is all I know since I just started research on that part of my family. I think your family must be in some way related to mine since Ahascragh is a small village (I went there 12 years ago) However on the days I was there the church was closed and the priest on vacation so I couldn't look up records as I did on other parts of my family. I need to send to national archives to get more information. When I was there I did meet Kellys who still own a farm there. I know that my uncle sold my grandmother's part of the farm to the remaining family many years ago. My email is (*) if you want to stay in touch and I will keep you advised of anything I find,  Karen Kelly Boyce

Yes, I live in NJ.  If your Bernard is the one in my family tree there would be a connection to Jersey City. If not it may be a 'distant' relation.  Karen

My gt gt gt grandfather was a Thomas Kelly born c.1837, in Co Galway. He married in Rochdale, Lancashire in 1853, his wife was Ellen Joyce born 1839, on their marriage certificate they state that she was from Shruhale, and her father was Edmund Joyce. Thomas's father was Martin Kelly, and he stated he was from Furbo. I have never as yet found any family belonging to my gt gt gt grandparents, other than 2 Joyce sisters ...... Re the Kelly's the Christian names Bernard and Bryan run in the family .... which caught my interest ...
Looking at Alicia's posting, I wonder if there is any kind of connection, someone once told me that my gt gt grandfather, Edmund Patrick Kelly (born Rochdale 1872) ....always stated that his family were from Roscommon. It was also said that other members of Thomas Kelly born in Co Galway, went to America.

Delia Kelly is my great great grandmother. Her brother Thomas and sister Nora came to America and lived with her for a little while in Jersey City according to one of the censuses. Like Delia, these Kellys are from Ahascragh also which I believe was in Roscommon but the borders changed and now its in present day Galway. Would you know where your Thomas is from and a possible year of birth?

My grandfather Thomas Kelly was born in 1834, I correct my intial dating of 1837, according to his marriage certificate and his given age it would be 1834.
He had children Martin, Michael, and John William, daughters Ellen(nellie) and Catherine, and my gt grandfather Edmund Patrick.  They children were all born in Rochdale, Lancashire UK.  One one of the census records, I believe it was 1861, there was a cousin called Bridget Riley in the household. Which would possibly imply that Thomas 1834 had a sister? ....... there is ls also a Nora in the family, but she would be gt gt grandaughter to Thomas 1834.
I have the names of all the partners of the children of Thomas 1834, from a family bible.
