Hi there,
Does anyone live or work near Tattingstone in Suffolk, SE of Ipswich?
I am looking for information on 2 Crag Pit Cottages nr Tattingstone. I have been speakign to my grandmother tonight who has been round for tea, and she has really opened up. Amongst other things She stayed in 2nr Crag Pit Cottages whilst as an evacuee during the war and has such fond memories of it. I would love to surprise her with a photograph of it, and any other information!
I would be willing to pay for your troubles if anyone is able to help.
Thank you.
-
P.s. She was also talking extremely fondly about a "Mrs Woolnough" who was lookign after her, not sure if this will help or not. Also, she thinks the cottages were on a small hill and she could see a "river" (I'm guessing this is Alton Water) from the cottages.

It's not very likely that I will be able to help with this and you may know of this already but if
(a) you google 'Tattingstone Church Suffolk' and your computer behaves like mine you'll get a number of hits and about 4 from the top there is one with the word 'maximilian' in its address. Click on that and it will take you to a site about Tattingstone. It has an old map, click on that and you will enlarge the map and see where Crag Pit was/is.
(b) I know that it is very unlikely that this will be the house you seek but if you google 'Two special council homes' it will take you to a story that may kindle your grandmother's memories.

Many thanks for your input, Clincher. :)
I am familiar with the sites you have posted, indeed the first thing I did was have a good trawl through the www!
What i suppose I am really after is a local who can tell me where the property is on a mp and, ideally a photo of the property which would be wonderful! :)
Thanks again, Clincher.

As you know the old map included on the 'Maximilian' website includes Crag Pit - right at the bottom of the map. Maybe if the map went a bit further it might show the cottages you seek.
One of the named roads on that map is Cockshill Road. A modern map (say the one available at the Streetmap website) seems to show the same road which is now spelt Coxhall Road.
I can't be certain whether the two roads are exactly similar because my printer is kaput and my visual memory is not up to keeping the images of the two maps in my mind.
But if my impression is right Crag Pit cottages wherabouts may be deduced from that kind of comparison especially if you crosscheck with the route from The White Horse pub (at junction of White Horse Hill and School Road) down School Road and into Lemons Hill.
Finally, check out the electoral registers before and after WW2 to se whether the name Woolnough appears in Tattingstone. The registers sre likely to be in Suffolk Record Office probably the one at Ipswich

Thanks so much Clincher,
I'm at work now so can't follow up your leads, just yet, but will have a good look tonight. From memory, there seem to be a fair few 'Crag Pits' on that old map. ... One of the angles i did take, via google i found that Crag Pit Farm exists to the North of the village, at the side of Alton Water. There are some cottages roundabout too so this is many another 'lead'.
Thanks again for your time. :)

Have a look at this site as I remember seeing that a local ex football star had purchased these cottages. www.guardian.co.uk/society/2007/sep/06/money.property
See if it jogs any memories.
Also the lady wouldn't have been able to see Alton Water as the reservoir wasn't constructed at the time of the Second World War.
It may well be that the cottages were demolished at the time of construction. Terry

Just been looking in the Yellow phone book for Ipswich and yes, Cragpit Farm, Tattingstone still exists but the address is now The New House, Cragpit Farm, Tattingstone so I am thinking that this was constructed in the 1970/80 when the reservoir was built, the cottages may have been nearby to the farm. A new road was a built to bypass Tattingstone and the reservoir, the A137, and Lemon's Hill Bridge was constructed to link the north and south parts of the village of Tattingstone after the valley was flooded to form the reservoir.

Thanks Terry, some very interesting stuff there. :)
To be honest, my grandmother was insisting she could "see a river from the cottage" but as she is cinfused abotu some things and as there was the resovoir there, i just presumed she was refering to Alton Water.
So i'm guessing the river she could see would have been where the resovior was??
I've emailed the local historian on the 'maximillion' so massive fingers crossed she may be able to help, it would be fantastic to be able to find a picture of it.

Try google map using IP9 2NX which is the post code for 2 Crag Pit Cottage, Tattingstone, I found it using the Royal Mail website, so all you need is someone to take a picture!

I'm sure someone must live sort of near there .... *hope*

Don't forget that Tattingstone was cut in half when the reservoir was created - Alton Water.
Some farms disappeared under the water, with others, land was severed from farm house.
I hope that your cottages were in the half that did not disappear under the water.

I think the cottages in question were flooded when the reservoir was built after having their roofs removed etc, I think I may well have emailed Ebor337 with this information some time back, I also tried contacting a chap at the Stutton Local History group but alas he was in hospital at that time, maybe worth trying again, someone somewhere must have a photograph before they were submerged you would think!
-
One property to have been submerged was, I believe, Alton Hall Farm. There was also a mill, certainly a building of some interest, which was removed and taken to the East Anglian Rural Life Museum at Stowmarket (their website may give further information).
My former neighbour worked in the admin office and her husband helped construct said reservoir, I'll ask them what properties disappeared. I shal be seeing them in the next few days.
There was a chap in Stutton who collated all he could about the area, unfortunately he is now in residential care and shall also ask my former neighbours how lucid he is and where all his material went (I hope the Suffolk Records Office).
I hope this helps.
Regards... Andrew.

Sounds like the same gentleman to me, hopefully Andrew will be able to find out about him.
I met up with a Mr Abbott in the vicinity of where the old road ran down into the now water filled reservoir and he pointed out the submerged wall to me, I cannot remember his first name unfortunately as it was in 2008!

Regarding Stutton Local History Group - I will send you a PM.
As you mention, The Local History Recorder is now in residential care, and he does write to me from time to time. All archives collected by LHRs are retained in the village for easy access to local researchers. However, if the LHR moves away etc and no replacement is found, all records pass to the relevant branch of the Suffolk Record Office.
This Saturday at our AGM I will be displaying several boards recording the Cowper Street area of Ipswich, the LHR for this area passed away earlier this year and his widow has kindly given all his work to the Ipswich branch of the SRO. I have the items for the LHRs display and they will be returned to the SRO during the following week.

Just a follow up.
Haven't seen old neighbours due to illness. However I shall be seeing them this coming week.
Sorry for the delay.
Regards... Andrew.

I have now seen my former neighbours and have gleaned the following information.
1. Cragpit Cottages are still there. They are on the South side of the reservoir facing it just off the old A137 where it went through the village. Can be seen on Google Earth (or similar) about 1/4 mile North from Cragpit Farm approx 50 yards from the waters edge.
2. There was another pair of cottages nearby that have disappeared however, she did say that she believed the ones remaining are the correct ones.
I hope that answers your question. Any further advice etc, please contact.
Regards... Andrew.
P.S. It looks as though the Brantham Bull has closed, possibly for refurbishment, may explain the lack of response from there.
PPS. Since the New Year, the Brantham Bull is now for sale and I suspect Ransford may be elsewhere.

My name is Russel Abbott and i am the son of Robert Abbott who now owns Crag Pit Farm, Tattingstone. Our family has owned this farm since 1944.
I read your story and would like to inform you that no2 Crag Pit Cott still stands next to no3 on the south side of the White Horse Public House south of the Alton water resevoir. My aunty is the owner of this cottage. This is next to the old A137 which used to run north from Crag Pit Cott to Ipswich and south to Manningtree.
The water your Grandma refers to back in the war was an old stream that ran from the east to the west through the valley. This was submerged along with Crag Pit Cott no1 by Alton water resevoir which was put through in the 70's. My father Robert would know the exact date.
If you would you be interested in a visit please e.mail me.
With thanks
Russel Abbott

Hello - I may be able to help and would certainly be interested in following this up but first of all I need to know if you are still using rootschat as the original request was over 10 years ago. I do hope so!
