Hello again. Here is another gravestone surname list.
This time it is for Escomb old Saxon Church and the cemetery on Hallimond Rd, Escomb.
The Old Saxon Church is in a lovely condition but Hallimond rd is a disgrace. It is covered in bramble bushes and the only graves that one can get access to are around the war graves.
I completed these in the winter time because that was the only time that it could be done.
The names with a w/m are the names from the war memorial
and the names with w/g are the single war graves..
As on previous lists, the names in brackets show they are on the same gravestone as the previous name.
Asquith wm, Atkinson, Aubrey?, Bailey w/m, Balmer w/m, Balmer w/g, Bell w/m, Bellerby, Biggs, Biggs w/m, Blades w/m, Blaire, Booth, Bowes w/g, Bowman, Bowness, Bracegirdle, Brown, Brunskill, Campion w/g, Casson w/g, Chadwick w/g, Chrisp. Hello Roger. Do you live locally to Escomb?
Adam
-
Hello Roger. I understand. Hope these belong to your family because they give lots of information.
Sacred to the memory of Margaret Booth, wife of Benjamin Booth, who died 5/July/1820 aged 71 years.
Also the aforesaid Benjamin Booth, who died 1858 aged 92 years.
To the memory of Joseph Booth also of Escomb, Woodside, yeoman, youngest son of the above named Benjamin and Margaret Booth of Etherley, who departed this life on the 7th day of March 1815? aged 27 years.
To the sacred memory of Lancelot Booth of Etherley, who died June/14/1852 aged 64 years.
Also of Ann Booth, daughter of Lancelot Booth, who died March/31/1825 aged 6 months.
Also of Thomas Booth, son of the above, who died August/11/1839 aged 3 years and 7 months.
Also Ann Booth, wife of the aboveLancelot Booth, who died August/28/1856 aged 63 years.
In memory of Ann Booth, daughter of Lancelot and Rachael Booth, who died 30/April/1795 aged 71 years.
Here rests the mortal remains of Thomas Booth of Etherley, who died May/5/1848 aged 70 years.
Likewise to perpetuate the sacred memory and eternal hope of Jane Booth, late of Etherley lane, in this Parish and widow of the above named Thomas Booth(Yeoman) who departed this life on the 6th day of July 1857 aged 74 years.
To the memory of John Booth, farmer of Etherley who died January/11/1854 aged 71 years.
And of Elizabeth Booth, his wife, who died September/2/1854 aged 68 years.
This next gravestone is very weathered but some wording can be deciphered :-
Here lies the body of Elizabeth Booth aged 62 who departed this life March/21/1730.
The rest of the inscription is below ground level.
These gravestones and the church (7th century) are well worth a visit.

Thanks Adam,
A great help and yes they are mine.
Roger
-
Thanks Adam.
Not sure they are mine but will look into them.
Went to Escomb a while back as have a few rellies buried there, with headstones as family remember going.
As you say the cemetery is a disgrace, i'd say 90% of the stones have been moved to 2 rows along the south wall. They haven't been maintained so are covered in ivy, brambles etc.
Someone recently told me there was a list of the headstones, but the person who had it loaned it out & it was never returned.

Hi All
I have my g.grandparents buried there ..somewhere.
I've been up quite a few times .... but as you say...it's impossible.
From what I understand Wear Valley are still responsible for the graveyard....I sent them an email 22nd of May .... but no response.
I would also like to find a list of the burials if anybody has any ideas.
I was thinking of finding and contacting the vicar of the old Saxon Church to see if he can help.
I did get the key for the church from a house opposite the church but the person wasn't in, the key was just hanging outside.
Please PM me if anyone has any ideas ..... my last burial was 1901 ... so it's not that long ago.
Jean

i was also up there last year found my bracegirdle headstone in the mud against the back wall cleaned them down and re stood them up if i was from escomb i would be ashamed of the condition of the graveyard although properly not the village responsibility it wouldn't take much for the villiage to make it more presentable if a dozen got together and cleared the paths and cut and burnt the brambles
if any one want photo of cenotaph please pm me as i did take some

Thanks Adam,
I was hoping it was my G Grandmother Pheobe, she is said to have died in childbirth in 1934 ish, but I can't find her death or even marriage, back to the drawing board!

Hi Adam,
Once again (and finally) could you give me the details for the SNAITH inscriptions in Escomb.
I popped across to the cemetery yesterday, but access to the few remaining stones was quite difficult!
Once again, thanks in advance.
Mark.
-
Hello Mark. Here is the inscription:-
In loving memory of Ann, beloved wife of Matthew Snaith and daughter of Edmund William and Margaret Coates of Witton le Wear.
Born 18/June/1842 Died 16/November/1898.
Adam
-
Hello Mark. Sorry the above message should have gone on the Witton le Wear board.
Adam
-
Hello Mark. And here is the correct inscription for Escomb. If you read the first posting you may have noticed that I combined the surnames for the Old Saxon graveyard with the Escomb cemetery in Hallimond road.
This Snaith is from the the old Saxon Church. There are no Snaith memorial stones in the Hallimond road cemetery :-
Sacred to the memory of Mary, wife of William Snaith of Etherley, who died September/22/1828 aged 34 years.
Also Elizabeth, wife of William Snaith, who died may/5/1837 aged 45 years.
Adam
-
Hi Adam,
Could you give me any info regarding the inscription for Gilroy,
Many Thanks, lisa...
-
Hello Lisa. Only one for Gilroy:-
Of your charity, pray for the soul of Jane, beloved wife of Martin Gilroy, who died 16/December/1932 aged 36 years
Also of Joseph, their son who died in infancy.
R.I.P.

Adam, that is Brilliant That's my G. Grandmother. I've finally found her! You don't have an idea where about's she is in the churchyard? I don't live in the area anymore, but I'll make the journey now! Many Thanks. Lisa...
-
Hello Lisa. I think it was a small stone that is leaning against the wall on the right hand side of the cemetery.
It is not the original place for the stone and would have been moved in one of the clearances made in the cemetery.
Unfortunately the cemetery is in an awful mess with bramble bushes and weeds all over the place.
If you leave it until the plant start to grow you will probably not be able to find it.
I do have some Gilroy, Catholic baptism and deaths at Tow Law and Crook from the mid to late 1800's if you are interested
Adam
-
yes that would be brilliant, I'll still go for a look, Thanks again. Lisa...
-
Hello Lisa. If you go to look up requests and start a new subject with the headings:-
Look up request for Gilroy baptisim.
and one for
Look up for Gilroy Deaths.
I will then post them.
They may not be yours but they may help someone else.

Adam:
I'd very much appreciate the names under GARRY. I have a few pockets of Garry's that I'm trying to piece together.
Thank you, Linda
-
Hello Linda. Here is the only inscription for Garry:-
Here lies the body of William Garry of Escomb, who departed this life January/8/1771 aged 85 years.
Also Elizabeth Garry, wife of the aforesaid William, who departed this life November/16/1773 aged 52 years.
William their eldest son, died 27/February/1796 aged 54 years
Adam

Many thanks, that helps.
Linda

Hello Adam.
Would the Hardy inscriptions include Thomas Hardy?
Thank you,
Laurie
-
hi
have you got any pearson family
thanks
-
Hello Anthony Pearson. I have removed the Pearson name from the list.
The name was there by mistake.
Adan
-
Hi, I'm interested in Nicholas Raine married in Escomb church to Ann, and buried there in 1898. Do you have the inscription for any Raines please
-
Hello Cannon. The only Raine gravestone at Escomb is one at the old Saxon church yard for Hannah, Dorothy and Thomas Johnson. They are all from the 1850's
There are no Raine gravestones at the municipal cemetery at Escomb.
Adam
-
Thanks for that. That's interesting, I have a photo of the old church here saying Nicholas Raine's tombstone is to the left of the church door. Could that be so?
-
Hello Cannon. Are you sure you have the correct church?
The latest date shown on any of the gravestones is 1859, 30 years before the one that you are looking for.
I would think that any burial for Escomb at that time would be the Halimond road cemetery, and as you will see by post number one the cemetery is in a poor condition.
Adam
-
Hello Adam
Would appreciate info on Atkinson, Dodds, and Dowson.
Thanks.

Adam
re Nichols Raine
The photograph is certainly the ld church at Escomb bu it is quite possible tha the writing on the back is incorrect. They were probably maried there in 1845 but buy the time he died in 1898 were living in Elswick. He was a big Methodist and I have a copy of a eulogy from the Elswick Road Wesleyan Church so it is quite possible he was not in fact burried in Escombe. He wa a director of the Iron works at Witton Park and his sons went on to found Raine and Co iron and steel.
Thanks again
Graham

Hello Hinton. Here are the inscriptions for Escomb burials:-

Also John Dodds, husband of the above Elizabeth Dodds, who died November/13/1830? aged 76 years.
St Johns Church. In memory of Hannah Dowson, who died August/17/1857 aged 72 years.
Also William Dowson, husband of the above, who died November/30/1858 aged 74 years.
Municipal cemetery. In loving memory of Sarah Ann, beloved daughter of Thomas and Margaret Atkinson, who died June/22/1926 aged 13 years and 7 months.
Municipal cemetery. Elizabeth Margaret, beloved wife of Thomas Dowson of Witton park, who died November/16/1911 aged 63 years.
Also the above Thomas Dowson, who died January/24/1920 aged 73 years.
Adam

Thankyou Adam.
Hinton.
-
Hi Adam
Can I ask what you are referring to St John's Church & municipal cemetery as?
St John's Church was at High Escomb, opposite the vicarage. The church was long since demolished, the grounds now classed as the 'cemetery'.
The Saxon Church is in Escomb Village.
Jay
-
Hello Jay. The St Johns church that I am referring to is the Saxon church in Escomb.
http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/adversaries/archaeology/escomb.html
The Hallimond road cemetery is the overgrown cemetery on the road out of Escomb.
Adam
-
Could you please send me details of the gravestone inscription for GLASS?
-
Hello again. Just the one for Glass :-
Erected in memory of William Glass, son of William and Elizabeth Glass of Etherley, who departed this life June/12/1826 aged 13 years.
Also of Mary Glass, sister to the above, who departed this life on the 1st day of February 1838 aged 22 years.

Hello Adam, Thank you for reply #1on 30th Sept. (Durham look up requests) I hope I am now on the correct thread and apologise for any inconvenience . Additional information for Thomas Maughan who died 1922 is " Escomb Church burial reg. #18 "
I realise 1922 is probably too late for burial at Escomb church, but is it possible to check if #18 is a family grave ?
Many thanks Gerry.
-
Hello again. And this is the correct thread. Now just go to the first posting (page 1) that I made on this subject.
Adam
-
Hello Adam, Thank goodness, I am making progress, I have the correct threads now for Etherley & Escomb, I was beginning to think I wouldn't get anywhere before I became an ancestor myself, as I will be 82 in a few days. Thank you for your help and patience. Gerry. ;)
