Hi all
I am trying to place a Joseph Packman who shows in the Otago area from around 1868 to at least 1885. I think he may be an ancestor who disappeared from Scotland sometime between 1859 and 1861.
He is showing on the Otago Nominal Index 1868-1876 at Naseby, and 1876-7 at Eweburn.
There is also a mention of him importing a horse from Melbourne in the North Otago Times on 20 Nov 1885.
If anyone can help in any way ie; how old he was, married? where he came from, went to!! I'd be very much obliged.
Cheers

Hi Ellen
Only 2 marriages (1836-1956) for Joseph PACKMAN:
1870 folio Ref: 1766
Sarah CASSIDY
is this his son?
1911 folio Ref: 3554
Mary Ann DEVENNEY
There’s a probate on Archway:
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/
which looks like him in 1891.
Unfortunately I don’t think there are any “chatters” in Dunedin, but you can contact Archives direct and get them to send you copies of the file.
The other Probate in 1950 could well be his son, so probably worth while getting both.

Possible children from School records with “Parent or Guardian” as J or Joseph PACKMAN:
Mary - dob 18 Feb 1871
Margaret - dob 27 Feb 1874
Joseph - dob 17 Aug 1872
Ellen - dob 16 Jan 1879
There are 2 entries for a Sarah:
One with parent listed as Jas (James) - could be a typo or transcription error....
Her dob is 30 Dec 1876
The other is with parent J.
Her dob is 27 Dec 1876
Could well be the same girl as I have found quite a few errors in dob from school records.

Thanks so much Bren and Althea.
With your help, and some help from another forum, plus a pedigree resource file on Family Search, and a load of stuff from PapersPast, I believe I have confirmed that this is my ancestor and his family.
Going to order his marraige and/or death certs and the probates to make 100% sure.
Result! :)
Cheers
Ellen.

Hi Ellen
That's great news.
Make sure you ask for a "Printout" rather than a certificate as they contain more information and they are cheaper.

Hi Ellen
Don’t know if you are still working on Joseph Packman but if you are then he is my partners great great grandfather on her paternal side. We live in Perthshire but my partner is a Kiwi and her family still live in the Central Otago area along with many of Joseph’s direct descendants. We can help you out with a lot of detail, photos etc. Joseph’s grave is in the Naesby cemetery which we have a photo of. He was a very interesting character with a very interesting history.
