Title: Do I Need Skype
Post by: VICTORIA on Sunday 15 June 08 10:23 BST (UK)
My OS is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2

When I open up my pc a page appears asking to log on to SKYPE

I found Skype ? pictures on my pc. Do I need it.

This started to appear after I answered an email from family friend inviting me to view their photo folder. I joined this site giving a user name and password. This userrname is shown on page that appears when I open up my pc.
Even though I enter password it is not recognised.

How can I remove this page.

If you go to Windows Control Panel and choose "Add or Remove Programs", Skype should be in the list of programs that can be removed.

I already looked -not listed.  Skype appears to be involved with my pc. Top of page/ box that appears when I open up my pc it says Packard Bell - Skype and is asking me to log on as a member of Skype an email address is there and is asking for password.
I think I will have a look at my Packard Bell manual to see if I can find information.

use your <search> facility and look for any files with Skype in them and see what you come up with.

Just did that, :) found numerous skype pics and I deleted them. I googled Packard Bell Skype and it appears to be something involved with making phone calls and is installed in Packard Bell pcs. There were a few items that I found in search facility that could not be deleted ? overwrited ?

Skype is a method of using your internet connection to make telephone calls. To use a Skype connection requires a subscription to their service.

If you don't use it or don't intend to use it then you can disable it (if you're prepared to delve into the system a little)

Go to Start, select and click on "Run"
type in msconfig in the box and click on ok or press return
in the selection that now appears go to the tab titled startup  - this lists ALL of the programs that will start when you start the computer.
search for the skype program and untick the box next to it.

When you next start up you will see a box saying you have use altered the start up settings - click on dont show this box and then ok

You may need to remove the program in Safe Mode as Windiws cannot remove certain live processes.  Shutdown and restart your computer and keep tapping the F8 key until the Safe Mode menu appears.  Select Safe Mode from the menu and log in as yourself if you have Administrator permissions and go to Add/Remove programs.

Alternatively use Task Manager (press Ctrl + Alt + Delete) to end the Skype process and then delete the program via Add/Remove Programs.

you should be very careful deleting a Skype program as it has readers in both your audio and video cards if you are not very careful you can very easily loose one or both.

Disabling the program in start up simply stops the program from automatically loading at the computers boot process and does not remove any files.

Thanks Falkyrn,

I am not having problems the only thing that happens when I turn on pc is that a black screen opens up asking to start up with Windows XP I do not have to enter myself as it starts up in normal fashion.

It sounds like it is going into Safe Mode by default.

That would indicate that something has happened that Windows does not like.

You may need to do a System Restore to fix the problem.

Alternatively download CCleaner and click on the Issues button and get it to scan your registry to fix any problems.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

If that doesn't fix the problem then try System Restore.
