Hello all,
Having had such luck (Hi Gabrielle!) with finding my relatives of Mirren Darragh on this site I have decided I am on a roll and will now try to trace any info. on my mum's mum's side. Her dad was Davie Hamilton - he played for Celtic between about 1905 and 1911. My mum always said he played for the greatest Celtic team ever!! He had five children - 2 boys and 3 girls ( I know the girls Nan, Jeannie and Mary - Mary was my grannie). I think one of the boys may have been Joseph? My great grannie died when Mary was about 3/4 years old. I know my family on Nan and Jeannie's side but would love to get some info and be in touch with any of the boy's families. Does anyone have any knowledge of them please. I will be forever grateful ( again :-) )
-
I have no knowledge of the family but a photograph of Davie hamilton can be seen at
http://www.kerrydalestreet.com/photo/541570/Davie+Hamilton?t=anon
It would also appear that he was capped for Scotland (although just the once) when he played on saturday 28th february 1903

Hi - thanks for the links - I have a little bit of info. on Davie including some pictures and some Celtic things my mum had. I am trying to trace any descendants of Davie's sons or Davy's brothers/sisters/cousins. I don't even know whether he was born in Glasgow yet. I'll keep looking though. Thanks again for your replies.
regards,
Marvin

Hi, I have recently started to research my family tree and believe we must be related.
My great grandfather was David Hamilton who was born in Glasgow in 1882 and died on 25th feb 1950 and yes, he did play for Glasgow Celtic. He married Mary Anne Gilroy on 1st of October 1903 in Glasgow. their children who were called Nan, Mary, Jeannie, David(1 of rwins deceased) and my Grandfather John Joseph Hamilton (1906-1982).
My Grandfather married Helen Welsh McEwan(1906-1989) on the 25th Feb 1925 and had 3 children and my mother Violet (1932-2008).
My mum married my dad 1n 1952 in Glasgow and had 2 children. I hope this helps you.

It's really good to hear from you - we are definately related then!! Thankyou for the information on my great grannie - I kniow she died when my grannie was about 4. I have a lovely photo of the 5 children taken in 1918 - I can send you a copy if you haven't got it already. I am going to do some research to see if I can find out where my great grannie came from. Hello again M, it was good to hear from you.
In answer to your question, although my sister and I were born in Glasgow Scotland we no longer live there. I live in Wiltshire whilst my sister lives in Oxfordshire, so we aren't that far away! I have a bit more information on our great gran Mary Anne Gilroy for you, so here goes....
Mary Anne Gilroy was born in Glasgow on the 11th Sept 1880. Her parents were John Gilroy (b. abt1842) and her mother was called Ann Quin (b.abt 1844). They were both born in Ireland but moved to Scotland and married in Glasgow on the 28th Oct 1872. John Gilroy died on 3rd June 1900 and Ann died on 23 Apr 1888.
John Gilroy's parents were Owen(?) Gilroy a school master and Mary Lynch and Ann Quin's parents were John Quin and Judith (Julia?) Fitzpatrick.
On David Hamilton, our Great grandad's side, his father was James Hamilton (1850-1915) who married Jane Morton (1848-1923) in Glasgow on the 31st October 1871. I believe James Hamilton's mother and father were Catherine(?) Fitzpatrick and David Hamilton although I am still researching into this.
I hope this helps and hope to hear from you soon......

Thanks for this info. You have done really well finding all this out. I have been a wee bit cheeky and put the info. up on my family tree - I hope you don't mind! If you make one more post on here we can use the private message facility. I don't think we are supposed to put recent family details up but it would be good to know your name!! Whereabouts does your sister live - I am near to the border of Oxfordshire (Thame area) and another 2nd cousin from my grandad's side (Mary Hamilton's husband) lives in Oxfordshire too - we got in touch via this site! Did you post on the Celtic wiki site recently? it used to be called Kerrydale street - (there is some photos of Davie on there, match stats etc -) because someone has posted on there - they are Davie's great grandson too!!! I sent them a message but haven't heard back yet. Speak soon (hopefully) :)
-
Hi M, I'm glad the info was useful. I have been speaking to my sister who lives in the Bicester area and she has some family info and photos which I hope to have a look at in the near future. You may be interested to know that you have a few more relatives in various shapes and forms down south as well, my mother's sister lives in Bedfordshire. As for posting on Kerrydale Street, well that wasn't me but I know of two cousins and a niece who used to live in Glasgow but I lost contact years ago. One of the cousin's I think inherited David Hamilton's football memorabilia (medals, caps etc) which I remember seeing at my Grandad's house(John Joseph) in Glasgow when I was a youngster. I think I will leave a message on Kerrydale Street as well, you never know!
Hope to speak to You soon.....

Hello
I'm a member of the Celtic Graves Society. We have found Davie Hamilton's final resting place in Dalbeth cemetery. I'll happily pass on the details to family members. We have already taken a family member to his graveside.
Davie was a member of the legendary Celtic team which won six league titles in a row between 1904-1910.
Here is his page on www.thecelticwiki.com

Hi Camillo,
A PM with any details of my Great Grandfather's final resting place would be gratefully received so that I could visit.
Hope to hear from you soon.......

You may be interested in seeing these too. He was a highly thought of player to the extent that he had his own "brake" club (like a modern day supporters club). I have also heard a supporters song of the era which sings his praises and the famous Celtic six-in-a -row team.

I've just joined here, pm me your e-mail address.
My dad has one of Davie's Scottish Cup medals, which is on show at celtic park

Camillo - thank you so much for the photo's, I have seen the football ones but never his funeral - my mum was there and said it was an amazing turnout. It is so kind of you to pass on the information about him.
Hammyceltic - great to hear from you too!- we are distant relations and it's lovely that we are all proud of our heritage. Which one of Davie's children are you descended from? My granny was his youngest daughter Mary.
I only wish my mum was alive to see all of this - she was a passionate Celtic supporter all of her life, and was always proud of her Glasgow roots.... she would be really pleased and I can imagine her singing her Celtic songs reading all this!!
Best Wishes to you all xxx

Thank Hammy for the photos.
It was him who originally posted them.
Great to see family members meeting on here.

Thanks again Camillo.
My mum used to sing some Celtic songs - I've seen lyrics on another site for the '6 in a row' song but they weren't the lines mum taught us - no mention of wee Hammy - I think they must have lyrics from a later era! ! He was definately mentioned in that one!
Thanks to all who have contributed so far and look forward to gwetting in touch with more family members - this is the best (and friendliest) geneaology site I have ever found!!

Could you send me the link for the '6 in a row' song please!

I've heard this song sung by an elderly Celtic supporter who has so many stories about the hoops. I'll try to get a link for it. Might even get him to sing it and record it.

Do you know anything more about the middle photo of the funeral, like where/when it was taken etc?
Regards,
M x
-
Marvin that isn't the funeral. It was the regular meeting of the Davie Hamilton Brake Club.
The Brake Clubs were the predecessors of the supporters clubs and used to travel to the games on horse drawn carts. The best players had a brake club named after them and Davie was one of them. I believe the David Hamilton Brake Club left from the Gorbals to travel the short distance to Celtic Park.
Some of the original still survive (in Bairds Bar in the Gallowgate, Glasgow for example) but I don't know what happened to the Davie Hamilton banner.
-
ahhh - I'd never even heard of a 'brake club' before today - shows what a phillistine I am! My sister said the photo looked too old to be the funeral! I am amazed at all the things I am finding out...
Not sure why it would have left from the Gorbals - my mum's family came from the Calton. I assumed that's where they all lived originally....
obviously I've still got a lot to learn...
Thanks again,
Regards,

It was named after Davie Hamilton as that would have been their favourite player!

Hiya - I understood that bit!! just was surprised that it left from the Gorbals, I just assumed he would have lived in the Calton area as that is where my mum and lots of my family lived, and I thought his fans would have been from there! Makes you proud to see it though wherever they left from - I wish I had known him, my mum said he was lovely... xxx

The Celtic Graves Society is proud to announce that there will be a ceremony to mark the resting place of DAVID HAMILTON Celtic Player, 1902-1912. A member of the legendary 6-in-a-row team 1904-10 who formed one of Celtic's most famous front-lines with Bennett, McMenemy, Quinn and Somers.
The commemoration will take place at St Peter's The Good Shepherd Cemetery, Dalbeth, near Celtic Park on Saturday 22nd January 2011 at 12 noon
Attendees at the event will include:
A representative from Celtic FC
Bobby Lennox, Lisbon Lion
Jim Craig, Celtic Graves Society Patron
Members of the Hamilton Family
A Blessing will be given by Monsignor Smith from St Mary of the Assumption Church, Calton.
All Celtic Supporters are welcome to attend and flowers/tributes can be laid at the graveside.
"I cannot forget little Hamilton, a forward of arts and parts,
whose nimble trickeries along the touch have been so profitable to the team."
From The Celtic Story, 1960.
David Hamilton was the outside-left in the first truly great Celtic team. As part of the famous forward line which secured the Scottish championship six years in a row from 1904-1910 as well as numerous victories in the Scottish, Charity and Glasgow Cups, Hammie was known as 'The Dancer' for his dazzling dribbling
and incredible pace. He was also a notable goalscorer in the team which helped establish 'The Celtic Way' of playing attractive, attacking football, scoring 68 goals in over 300 appearances in the Hoops - including an incredible 8 goals in 16 derby matches against Rangers.
It was said at the time that for the average Celtic fan blessed to have seen Willie Maley's incredible team in action "rolled off his tongue trippingly and lovingly a litany that made music for him in five sweet symphonies - Bennett, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers and Hamilton."
We hope you can join us at the ceremony and after at the Celtic Club on London Road prior to the kick-off against Aberdeen at 3pm. For more information please visit:

Hi, my mum is Davey Hamilton's granddaughter. Would love for you to get in touch x
Is that you Helena?
It's Sean here :) Tried to PM you but it wouldn't allow me.

New members need to make 2/3 posts before PM system will work.
-
hi Hels,
my mum is also Davie's granddaughter - her mum is his daughter Mary-Ann, (the poster Marvin is my sister)
Who do you descend from ? As you seem to know Sean Im guessing its one of the boys !
We dont know much about them but mum kept in contact with Nan and Jeannie all her life (Davie's three daughters all stayed very close to each other in Glasgow and all lived in the Calton all their lives) - my mum and her brother moved to London with my dad and we are in Buckinghamshire now - I've never been to Glasgow but hope to come one day and see where my mum grew up :-)
-
Hi Sean, Hels13 is my Aunt Helen. this is me now! This is great! Good work cuz! X x x

We have been trying to find out the occupants of Davie's lair and had confirmation from the archdiocese today that Section 15 - Lair 1819 was bought by David on 7/8/1915 which was the day of Mary's Funeral. In those days The Archdiocese's offices for Dalbeth were within the Cemetery itself and that tended to be the way things were done.
So Mary Ann and Davie rest in the same lair.

Thanks for the information Camillo, it is nice to know they are at rest together.
It is nice to put faces to a story so here is a picture I sent to Hammy and Marvin a while back.
The picture is of Davie Hamilton his wife Mary Ann and their children taken around 1914-15. Sadly, Mary Ann died not long afterwards of tuberculosis in august 1915.
John Joseph who is Hels13 (Helen) and my Grandfather as well as being Hammy's and Helena's (Hels13 also) Great Grandfather is standing at the top left of the photo. Mary, who is Marvin's and Berniemc's Grandmother is standing in front of him. The other children are Nan (Annie) standing in the middle, David and Jeannie (bottom right).
p.s Hi Helen and Helena hope you and the rest of the family are keeping well. The family is going to have to get together sometime and meet.......

Hello Marvin, Camillio and any other contributors to this site regarding Davie Hamilton. I believe I am related to Davie Hamilton and hoped that you fellas might be able to help me fill in some blanks or bring some clarity. My dad was born in 1934 and lived out his youth for the most part in Maryhill. My dad was originally registered at birth as David Hamilton though the surname changed when he was about 6 when my Gran married. My Gran was originally a Hamilton and her first name was either Jeannie or Jane ( she was just Gran to me and sadly passed away in the 90s.). My dad passed away over a dozen years ago and only really shared snatches of his family history. I am fairly sure he said Davie Hamilton the famous Celtic footballer was my Gran' s uncle (?), certainly a close relation. Interestingly my dad also made reference to Nan (a name given to one of DH' s daughter's on this site), he may have said Aunt Nan, I can not remember. So, does any of this information make sense to any of you and if so what can you tell me? I may be talking myself into this, but even though she is a child in the photo of DH and his family (page 4 of this site) Jeannie looks an awful lot like my Gran who I am guessing would have been born some time on or before 1910. I will be grateful for Any info, thank you
-
Hi wytcher
Welcome to RootsChat :)
Likely the best way to be certain and from that work back would be to check your Gran's marriage cert, circa early 1940s from what you say, if she married a few years after your Dad was born in 1934.
This date would be after the cut off when you can view images online on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and would need to be ordered. Alternatively, if you live around the Glasgow area for example, the Genealogy Centre at the Mitchell Library would let you view more modern certificates for a daily access fee (see www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries/the-mitchell-library/family-history/Pages/home.aspx)..

I'm sorry this is bringing up an old thread, but I hope that one day Davie's survivors will find it.
I happened to be in Saint Peter's Dalbeth cemetery (London Road, next to celtic park) on the hunt for some graves of my relations and the groundsman was very helpful. As soon as I said I was a Celtic fan, he took me around all the graves.
I do some contribution for FindaGrave.com and I updated the records for all the Celtic players, chairmen and co-founders that are interned there.
I hope it's of some use.
Davie Hamilton was a legend of his time and not forgotten in the community.
