The only one I'm sure of is Dorothy Noble Taylor born 1864 in Sunderland. According to free BMD, they were married in Sunderland in 1883.

Hi Joan,

I can only see the same Dorothy~James Guthrie on the 1891 census too. That Dorothy was born 1n c1857 born Rafton Head, Cumberland

On the 1871 there is a Dorothy Taylor, born 1865 in Sunderland, mother also called Dorothy (widowed)

Dorothy's mother was Dorothy Noble Metcalf married to James Hunter Taylor but he died in 1892 in Sunderland.

Perhaps the Guthries moved out of Durham after their marriage. ???

Hi Joan,

On the 1871 there is a Dorothy Taylor, born 1865 in Sunderland, mother also called Dorothy (widowed)

Her mother Dorothy is shown as Married, described as a Block & Mast Makers Wife. Living at 27 Bramwell Street.

Thanks Stan

I have James Hunter Taylor as a block and mast maker. He was born in Shetland and married Dorothy Noble Metcalf in 1852 in Sunderland. One of 7 children was Dorothy Noble Taylor whom I thought married James Henry Guthrie (Free BMD). Perhaps she married someone else and that is my problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hooray! I just found her by going to a Shetland website. James Henry Guthrie must have died before 1891 when she married Thomas Couglin and is found on the 1901 census at 30 Queen St. East, Sunderland. In 1917 she married a Thomas Corcoran.

Thanks all!

I am a direct descendant of the Metcalf/Melvins.
Dorothy Noble Metcalf married James Hunter Taylor on 25/10/1852 in Parish Church Bishopwearmouth. Witnessed by Dorothy's father Robert Noble Metcalf
The middle name comes from Thomas Noble cabinet maker born Sunderland Bishopwearmouth, who was Dorothy Wilkins second husband, her first husband was George Metcalf.
