I was looking at my G grandfarthers details from an online census and I thought I'd do a search on google of the address. And what do you know? It's listed with a real estate agent online and there's a photo from the street. Pity about the cars though.
I better go check some more address's, you never know.

Deadants,
That was a good stroke of luck! Well done :)

I would be really cheeky and phone them up and ask for a copy of the details, tell them your interested in moving to the area or something.
Down side is you may get bombarded with loads of details.

Deadants,
Great tip there, I am going to get Googling now. 8)
Kazza.

Hi,
Yes doing a bit of Googling on street names does pay off - using google image finder is useful too. I found a picture of Morris Street, Stepney which is the street where my family owned a pub from 1895 to 1920s just along from the Sainsbury's.
It is on the Sainsbury Archive website - on asking to reproduce it, they were very helpful and gave me permission to use it on my family tree website if I wanted too. I've also found some old pictures of streets where my rellies lived which is just interesting to see.

One of the best ones I found doing a google search was my GG grandfarthes pub in Barnsley, The Masons Arms. It's no longer a pub but the building is still there. It's no a tyre retailer.

Here's a then and now. It was in front of the old Clarkeson Brewery. The Sign on the old pub says Clarkeson Brewery. The one on the right was black and white, I colourised it in photoshop.

Hi Deadants,
What a great picture - you say you colourised it yourself - not tried that - have removed marks etc - but not thought about recoloring!
Any tips?
Cheers
Keith

Well Keith, if you want to colorise a photo, you will need a software package that can do Layers. I use Adobe Photoshop but the cheaper version Adobe Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro will do the job
There are plenty of online tutorials for colorising.

This is one of my first attempts. It's my grandfarther with the shotgun.
It looks a lot better at high resolution, but you get the idea.

Hi deadants,
Thanks for that - have used layers - but only to make signs for my model railway!!
Never thought about using it for actual photos!!
Is your grandfather getting ready for a Shot Gun Wedding!! ;D ;D
Hope my first attempt is as good.
Cheers

There is a great story that goes with that photo of my Grandfather. It was taken in 1915 when he was an apprentice carpenter. They were building a new residence for some wealthy cattle baron in the Huter Valley north of Sydney. All the workers lived in tents on site as there was no mass transport to the cattle station. His tent mate was a fellow by the name of Oz Treharne.
When my Grandmother died in 1997, my mother was going through her papers and came across the following letter.
My Grandfarther went on to start is own Building business. He was a keen photographer and photographed just about eveything he worked on. Out of his 59 grandchildren, I was the lucky one who ended up with the photos. This is one of the main reasons I started doing Geaneology.

I'd better not show that to my other half otherwise that's another job for me as well as painting wagons.

Deadants,
Maybe you would like to make a new topic in the Technical board with your information and tips on colourising old photos?
Kazza.

Good Idea kazza. I'm sure most of us have interisting photo's of the past that would look great with a splash of colour.

Thank you Deadants,
I look forward to reading your tips.

Here's a Picture I found a couple of minutes ago, on http://web.ask.co.uk/ I typed Shambles street and this was in the list.
If there is anybody from Barnsley who can confirm or deny that this is the same building in the photo as the one above I'd appreciate it . All opinions are welcome.

Hi Deadants,
For what it's worth I think you have a winner here. The buildings have changed, but the bend in the road is the same and the two older photographs both have a bay window. Do you know what year these pictures were taken?
Jill

Thanks Jill, the top let was last year and the top right was origanly a black an white photo out of a magazine. Now Idea on the bottom photo date. I guess thats the Clarkson brewery on top of the hill.

Deadants,
Just a thought - what about asking Barnsley Family History Society?

I sent an email to the Barnsley library last night. No reply yet. But the history society, I'll give them a go. You never know your luck.

Hello deadants,
I am from Barnsley and the photos ARE of the same building, on the way down Shambles Street towards the Town End Roundabout.
Russell
-
Thanks Russell,
I showed it to my cousin who was in Barnsley last year, she was thrilled to see this photo. She said the building on the hill is a church. I thought it might have been the Clarkson Brewery. So mayby you could tell me if the Church is still there and what the churches name is. It might have figured in my GG Grandparents lives.
deadants

Hello again,
The building is now a theatre called The Lamproom. It used to be something to do with Barnsley Scouts (Boy's club - that is it!) or something like that. I will try to find out if it was a church at some point, but I do not think so.

I just found another picture using google image search. It shows the Architect drawings of the house where my GG Grandfarther was asigned as a convict.
http://www.newcastle.edu.au/services/library/collections/archives/int/pender/windemere001.html
One of his daughters was drowned in a flood. According to the records she is buried in shade of the house.

Several times I've been to take an outside photo of an address where an ancestor lived and noticed a "For Sale" sign outside (especially if the original property has been converted into separate flats). Now I always try and find an estate agent near the property I'm interested in, and pretend I'm an interested buyer if the property or a similar one in the same block is for sale or for rent with them.
I now have quite detailed information/ photos and plans of the interior on one flat in Highbury, one in Hampstead, another in Fulham, and yet another in Eastbourne where my family lived, sometimes over 100 years ago.
And of course the internet throws up all kinds of other opportunities with Estate agents advertising their properties there.

Hi Keith,
On my Grandmothers birth certificate, it says she was born at Mossmans Paddock, Charters Towers. Queensland. The paddock today is a cricket ground in the middle of Charters Towers. The Qld. state Library sent us the history of Mossman , the guy who owned the paddock. plus the sent us the map of the area when my Grandmother was born, (1893) and modern day maps. Now heres the question. Why was she born in a paddock?
But getting back to the topic of of our ancestors residences, I guess all I need is a picture off the cricket ground and I can say to everyone, It's just the same today as when my Grandmother was born. :)

yes, both buildings are the same. The original photo is by E.G.Tasker. who had a photography shop in Barnsley. He took many photos of Barnsley and many of the buildings shown in them have all disappeared. Some years ago many of these photos were published in a series of books called Barnsley Streets. Your photo
is in issue 9. and states that it was taken after the Masons Arms
had lost its license & was being used as offices by the brewery company. If my memory is correct the brewery was on Park road.
There is a list of landlords of the pub from 1818-1956(presumably
when it lost its liscense, so the photo would date fom 1956. The pub was at the bottom of Shambles street just below the Pinfold
steps and I must have passed it a thousand time on my way to & from school. Hope this helps. (let me know your granddads name .I will check it against the list)
-
Hi Tomkin,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
My GG Grandfarther was the publican, his name was Samuel Clarey and he was married to a Ellen McCollister. Samuel was publican from 1874 - 1879. When Samuel died, Ellen held the licence from 1879 - 1881 when she remarried a younger man by the name of John Willoughby Stables, he was then the piblican from 1881 - 1883.
I would be interested to see if this tallys with what it says in the book you have.
-
Hi Deadants,
The information in "Barnsley Streets" is exactly the same
as yours. The name is spelled Clary though. It gives:-
1879-1874 Samuel Clary,
1881-1879 Ellen Clary,
1883-1881 John W.Stables.
As I said there is a full list of landlords from 1818-1956.
The building in the other photo is now The Lamproom Theatre.
It used to be a Methodist Chapel.
Thats all I'm afraid,
Tomkin
-
Thanks for your intrest tomkin, it's nice to talk to someone who has tread the same paths as my ancestors.
Things start to get a bit murky when I start to look for Samuels forebears, but I guess I'm not the only one i that boat.
Cheers deadants

Hi Deadant,
I understand that Barnsley Council is at last
getting in touch with the real world. They would appear to be
working on transcribing the BMD records so that eventually they
will be capable of being accessed by anybody on the internet.
I have made a note of your details. If I come across anything else
I will let you know.
Tomkin
-
That sounds like great news for people with ancestors from the Barnsley district. Who knows what may be lurking in the records waiting to be unearthed.
I really appreciate your help Tomkin, i would be very gratefull if you can keep me informed on the progress of the Barnsley council BMD records project. I wonder if Barnsley council has a web site that lets you know what their up to?
deadants

Hi Deadants,
Barnsley Council has no idea what they are doing,at
the best of time, Will keep you informed.

I have just come across a really old posting about your grandmother being born in Mossman's Paddock, Charters Towers, Queensland (it was posted in 2005). My great grandmother Ada Maud Lewis was born there on 4 Aug 1889 and was wondering if you had any further information about the place. I am intrigued.
