Joseph Atkinson Johnson born abt. 1805 Woodstock, subsequently married in London. I have always assumed his middle name may be a clue, but so far have not found his parents. Can you help?
-
The parish registers of Woodstock have been transcribed and indexed by the members of Oxfordshire FHS, and are sold on microfiche and CD.
Our transcription shows the baptism as :-
26 October 1805
Joseph Atkinson JOHNSON, son of Joseph and Ann
I hope that is helpful.
Best wishes.

Thank you very much Paul, that's the best breakthrough I've had in ages!

keebleancestors..............I have just joined this site and it seems you may close links with my wife's lines.
She is descended both from Joseph Atkinson Johnson and the Sleigh/Hunt marriage you also posted about recently. I seem unable to email you for any further news but would be happy to hear from you.

If you are online again keebleancestors it would be good to hear if we have these folk in common.

This is the only marriage between a Joseph JOHNSON and an Ann(e) on the OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837):
27 MAY 1795 - Joseph JOHNSON to Ann HARTSHORN at Fritwell
Fritwell is on the northern county boundary, but the date looks good - would need some further investigating!
Pennie
PS No instance of a (male) JOHNSON marrying a (female) ATKINSON on the index.

I am still hunting for Joseph Atkinson Johnson's parents since the above; does anyone have access to the original Fritwell register to determine whether "Atkinson" may have been mistranscribed as "Hartshorn".

I'm not sure the Ann Hartshorn marriage is yours at all.
Think this is more likely to be yours:
Joseph Johnson married Ann Atkinson 29/8/1802 St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London.
Have noticed, time and time again, that couples hailing from counties on the outskirts of London seem to marry in London for some reason.
Unfortunately, there are no other details on the marriage entry except that they married by banns.

Have noticed that the Joseph and Ann in Fritwell still seemed to be in Fritwell in 1804 (when a son baptised) and 1806 (when a daughter baptised) so another reason why I feel sure that they are not your Joseph and Ann.

Thank you for your suggestions Annette; I had the St Martin's marriage from another source.....? where?........if, as seems likely, this is the right couple then perhaps one or both parties came from Woodstock as you surmise. I have not however been able to find any other children of the marriage anywhere.

I would be very interested to hear from essexdavid and keebleancestors regarding Johnson research. My Great Grandmother was Matilda Johnson, who was the granddaughter of Joseph Atkinson Johnson

Hello Gramsie
this is my wife's family; Matilda Louisa was a sister of her grandfather, Edward Frederick Johnson. I will be pleased to share information if you would like to contact me via the link
