Hello all,
not posted on this site for a while, due to exams and family commitments---but it is nice to come back to.
Not sure where to put this post--but i'm sure somebody will point me in the right direction.
My husband has just done a house clearance for a friend, and when clearing out the attic he found old suitcases full of odds and ends and loads of old photographs, papers, newspaper clippings, apprentiship papers,WW1 postcards(some embroidered) a veritable treasure trove of sombody's family history.
The house is in Aberdare,S,Wales but looking through the stuff most of this persons earlier years were spent in ;
Alverton Avenue in Poole,Dorset
67 Leamington House-West Street,Southsea,Hants
Newport-Isle of Wight
Bombay--India
Harrowgate
Some of the names on some of the letters and post cards are;
Charlotte A Hulcoop
Caroline? Edna Louisa Hulcoop-daughter of Henry and Edna Hulcoop.
Edna Marion Sabin
Stanley Clifford Elkins
Oswald Tracy Hawthorne (Major) son of Robert John and Minnette Mary Hawthorne.
There is also a memorial plaque for a John Hawthorne.
There does not seem to be any family in Aberdare, and it would be such a shame to throw away all this stuff,so I am hoping someone recognises the names.
Do you think this post should go on the Enland board.
Bye for now.

I can't lay claim to any of the names mentioned............but with such interesting items, I'm more than prepared to adopt them.
Good luck with your search..........and please, don't throw anything away.

these documents do not belong to the friend then???
-
See last post he also has Henry Hulcoop and Edna Hoar in his tree...so looks like there is a match...
Cas
-
He's a lucky person 8)
Hope he replies.
-
I agree Silvery...Imagine how exciting that would be to get a msg, stating there is a suitcase full of stuff that relates...a genealogists dream eh? :o
If not perhaps he has her direct contacts....
Cas :)
-
Just rechecked there are at least 4/5 people who have this family in their trees. on Genes..how do we know which would benefit most Think it only fair all should know :-\
Perhaps mail them all and let it go on direct line? Up to maryma...
Cas

Looks like the Hawthorne connection is to Charlotte
Marriages Jun 1910
BROWN Percy Andover 2c 361
GREGORY Emily Elizabeth L Hartley W. 2c 361
HAWTHORNE Oswald Tracey Hartley W. 2c 361
Hulcoup Charlotte Amelia Hartley W. 2c 361
Also someone on IGI has got a pedigee resource file on this couple., with name, contact address in England...
-
Oh, I love when these things come up. I think I agree with Cas, they all should know, and maybe the first responder could get it, or some such. What a find this is going to be for some lucky genealogist.
Kath
-
Also on A****y world tree there are 21 entries for same family of Henry & Edna
Out of these.... 5 for Caroline with husband named. 5 for Charlotte with husband named, so it should find a home as there are plenty of takers....one of them as same name as who submitted the pedigree file
Wonder what marysma will do?

What luck that it was your husband who was doing the house clearance. I bet there's lots of things like that, which builders etc find and just chuck into a skip.

What a wonderful find. Wouldn't you just love someone to find something like that belonging to your family.
It will be interesting to see who gets what.
-
Lovely to know yours, and your husband's, desire to find the family.
Only recently there was thread on rootschat of a lady trying to trace her grandmother's bible and prayer book, which had unfortunately been left in a cupboard when they moved house, from Peterborough.
Tried to locate them, but without success - thirty years too late :(
(But, you never know .....)
So, this is lovely to see someone tring to re-unite the belongings with their rightful owner/s.

Evening all,
What a clever lot of people on this site!
I did not think of looking on G***s and A******y.duh!
"What will Marysma do"--well I don't know what to do for the best.
Which person do I send a message to,if I mail them all,how would I divide the stuff up?. What a dilema.
It would make me very happy to see these wonderful treasures go to the right person,so I will await your advice on what to do.
Thanks all.
Marysma

Look at the people's trees and see who has the most information (with sources). Then they get the stuff.
Or see who joins Rootschat first. ;D ;D
I don't know. It's a tough one. Wish I had so many people researching my family.
Kath
-
I'd copy everything .... everybody gets copies - but the first to reply on RootsChat gets the originals !! :D :D
-
Well I think it would be nice for it to go to the direct descendants of Charlotte or Caroline...but how to know?...
I would contact them all and which fits best, and you feel happy about....then pass on, but up to you.
You will probably have other suggestions, but I am sure it will have a happy outcome, thanks to you and your OH, better than it being binned, which lots would have done.
Whatever you decide, I am sure it will make someone from the Hulcoop/Hawthorne/Sabin descendants very happy.
Pat OH and yourself on the back for rescuing such treasure for someone :)
Best wishes

Hi,
some good idea's Kath,Cas and Liverpool Annie.
I have membership with the 2 other sites mentioned,so I will start looking up the names tomorrow.
My husbands friend did not want any of the stuff that was left in the house and told Tony to dump it in the skip!!
I will let you know how I get on--plus check back to Rootschat for any more posts.
Thank to you all for your help.

Another of these wonderful stories! I'm sure it will have a happy ending. Looking forward to seeing where you find a home for this stuff!

I was fortunate enough this year to manage to reunite a family bible my mother bought in a sale in the late 60s, early 70s with someone on Rootschat who was a direct descendant of a name in that bible.
Cathy ;D ;D
-
Well done Cathy, that must have given you a warm and fuzzy :D :D
Let's hope the same can be done for these papers.
Barbara
-
I think my Mum bought it because she thought it was so sad it had left the family - she would have been very pleased to know that it had gone back to the family.
Mum also bought a sack of old documents in a sale which if I remember right included some details of a family but are so faint you can hardly read them. It is my project this winter to go through the sack and try to find a home for these also.
Cathy ;D ;D
-
Cathy,
Good luck with that project and good job with the bible. It's a great feeling to be able to bring something back to a family like that.
I live in a huge antiques area and like to go and get details on photos and albums and try to locate family. I've been successful once with a beautiful photo album. It included a wedding invitation and a pressed flower, along with photos. I didn't buy it as it was a bit pricey for someone not related, but I took down all the names, did research, and found a family member who contacted the antique store and managed to acquire the album. Yipee.
Haven't been in a while, but am feeling inspired.

That's great Kath........there really should be a 'sticky' thread with all the success stories on it. Just imagine how it could galvanise others into finding and returning 'lost' items.
Barbara
-
thats great Kath, well done you
do youl ive in Leicester or Cornwall? thats where my ancestors come from (as well as Sussex but i live there)
-
I do hope that Marysma finds a suitable family member who will cherish all that fabulous information.
Every time I find something of interest I have tried to return it to a family member. Couple of threads on here where I have had some great results but my latest find is now on the Photo Restore board - titled "Scrap Heap Challenge"
It's so sad to see a lovely family picture thrown away. This one actually has all the family names and ages on it and I know there are descendants out there somewhere just from 5 minutes of research I have done.
Sadly, some people just don't care like we do :'(

I live in New York state. sorry. :)
-
Hi,
I was wondering if you knew how the papers etc came to be in the friends house in the first place? Perhaps that might give you an idea of who originally saved all the items, and their descendants might be the ones to return the items to.
-
Fantastic idea glenclare. I love those ah-ha moments. The more eyes on here the better. Is it possible to trace ownership of the house? Although, they could have been there quite a long time. Someone in the 80s bought a house my grandfather had lived in in the 30s, with several owners in between. The stuff was tucked into a far dark corner of an attic. It just so happened he went to college with one of my brothers and when the stuff was found, asked him if he was related to the names in the papers, so my brother got the stuff.
Definitely worth a shot, though.

whenmy nan and grandad moved 10 years ago, they didnt empty the attic :o ::)

Oh, can you go back and knock on the door? ??? ???
-
Yes Toni - I'd be enquiring!! :D Trouble is, the new owners have probably thrown out the stuff in the attic by now! :'( :'( :'(
MarieC

I'd still be giving it a try........You'd end up kicking yourself if you didn't :-\ :-\

if my nan wasnt still alive i probably would but i dont think i can with her still alive, i might ask her abit more about it, i am sure they found lots of stuff up there like my mums toy dalek !

Hello All,
sorry about the delay in posting.
Everytime I put a message on this site and pressed post--I would have a message saying Internet Explorer Has Encountered a Problem and Has to Close---FRUSTRATING!!. Number 2 son has now fixed the problem,I'm glad to say.
I have now found 2 relatives of the Hulcoop/Hawthorne family who would love to have the photograhs etc--trouble is how do I divide them!!lol.
One lady lives in Canada and one in the U.K.
My husbands friend say's that whoever had lived in the house had died, and whatever relatives left had taken anything of value out of the house ,what was left had to be binned.Sad.
Thanks again for all your help.
Marysma
-
I'd copy it all and then make two bundles with half original and half copy, then tell them to take their pick!!
Well done on finding them
Barbara
-
That would be a good way to do it, or just send all the copies to the USA one, they're further away ;D which lot are the closest relatives you could do it that way.
Joy
-
If you scan them in yourself and email them, make sure that the scans are at 300dpi (or more) for good copies.
You could always ask if they want to pay for you to have them done.
-
Good suggestions here!
It's great that you have managed to find rellies! Hope you manage to sort out how to distribute them. Well done, Marysma!
MarieC
-
Just read this story, how fascinating :)
and would like to say thank you
to Marysma, for caring enough in finding the
rightful owners.
Good luck :)
Bennett .

Thank to you all for your helpful suggestions.
Good idea to scan the pics--but I will have to get my son to help on that one!
Regards.

I have just registered on this forum and noticed you had found some hulcoop photos with names of my great grandfather leonard and edna. They had 3 children one of which was Ethel my gran. I would love to see the photos or at least get the contact details of who they were passed on to as they will presumeably be relatives. Regards martin,

Hi Martin, Welcome to Rootschat
Marysma has not been online for a while. If you post another once or twice the PM system should activate, so you will be able to send a personal message, which should give them an email notification if the reply here has not.
Alternatively you could ask a moderator to check if marysma email is still viable to forum/topic
Good luck
Cas

Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to talking to the forum on various topics and helping where i can.

Hi Martin
Marysma may have received other notifications for replies to other topics she has joined in since she was last online here but has not repsonded to those either but her profile hasn't been amended to show that emails have stopped getting through.
The best way forward might be to send her a personal message as your post count is now high enough to see if you get a reply.

It might help if you copy the topic's URL
