Could someone please help me with a look-up in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census and possibly the marriage for the following family :
William LENOX (LENNOX) born C1804
his wife Ann nee WATSON born c1814
They had a daughter Sarah born C1832.
Other siblings of William were :
Jane born C1799
Robert born C1802
Erving born C1807
Elisabeth born C1810
Barbry ? born C1814
& Ernest born C1816
Annie came to Australia around 1864 with Daughter Sarah.
Thank you in advance
Cheers,

I have found this family in Carlisle 1851,. Is it yours?
HO107/2429/309/54
Botchergate, Carlisle
William Lennox, head, 42, Labourer, born Scotland
Ann, wife, 38, labourer, Scotland
Juna, dau, 14, Scotland ( this looks like Jane to me, wrongly transcribed by Ancestry)
robert, son, 9, Scotland
Elizabeth, dau, 6, Carlisle
William, son, 5, Carlisle
Mary, dau, 3, Carlisle
Ann, dau, 1, Carlisle
If it is yours, I'll check 1841, Scotland to see where they were then.

Jen,
I don't think that this would be the same family as Ann (Annie) was born in Cumberland not Scotland and as far as we know they only had one child, Sarah.
The others were siblings of William LENOX.
William was supposed to have been married previously and had other children and we do not know if he actually married Ann.
By the way it was Ann (Annie) and Sarah who came to Australia C1864 not William as I said, sorry.
Maybe Ann (Annie) and Sarah born C1832 in Ainstable, Cumberland were on their own in the census and that William and Ann you found are his "OTHER" family ??? as the children's name do fit with his siblings.
The family story goes that he did have a child to his wife about the same time as Sarah was born so the Robert you found would fit this exactly.
I hope that I have not confused you too much,
Christine

What about this couple in 1861?
RG9/3904/35/2
Kirkoswald, Penrith
Lennox, William, head, 55, born Dumfries
Lennox, Ann, wife, 45, born Holmegate, Cumberland
No sign of a daughter but she would probably have left home by then.

Jen,
Yes, that looks like it could be them.
When you have time could you check if there is any sign of these two in the 1841 or 1851 census as Sarah should be with them then or maybe just with Ann?

I have searched both 1841 and 1851 and can't come up with anything immediately. It is possible that the name has been wrongly spelt or transcribed, so will take a bit of lateral thinking to find it.
Unfortunately, I have to be busy with real life things for most of today but will have another hunt later, if noone else comes up with the jackpot.

Thanks for that Jen

This could be Sarah in the 51 and 61 census. Unfortunately it doesn't help all that much as there is no other family with her.
1851 38 ScotbyWetheral Carlisle
Sarah Linox 14 Ainstable servant
to Mary 54 and Ronald Donaldson 65 head
1861 Census 17 Richmond Ter. Blackburn Lancashire
Thomas Heldle 39 Born Blackburn Cotton spinner employer
Sarah Lennox 25 born Ainstable servant

Mariac,
Sarah's death certificate states that she was born in Ainstable so that could be her.
She came to Australia with her Mum in 1864.
Thankyou,
Cheers,
Christine

Do you have Ann's death certificate from oz.
It would give you Ann's parents and if Sarah had any siblings.
That is assuming that the person who gave the information knew.
Did Sarah's death certificate tell you where her parents came from?
-
Mariac,
Ann(Annie)'s parents were James Watson and Ann Clark and it shows Sarah as the only issue.
It states that Ann was born in England and she married in Penrith, Cumberland. Sarah's death certificate says she was born in Ainstable, Cumberland

Hi Christine,
I think this may be the birth of Sarah but she was christened as Sarah Watson on 17/4/1836 in Ainstable Mother Ann Watson no father
You can see this on the IGI batch no C006143
1841Census Kirkoswald Penrith Parish Ainstable
James Watson 60 born Cumberland
Ann Watson 20 born Cumberland
In the same census
There is also a Sarah Watson aged 5 born Cumberland living with a family of Scotts in Caldbeck??
Ancestry has her just by herself .
Iam not all that familiar with this area so
Perhaps if someone has access to something better it could be worth a look
Regards
Mariac

In the same census
There is also a Sarah Watson aged 5 born Cumberland living with a family of Scotts in Caldbeck??
The IGI has a Hannah WATSON marrying a SCOTT at Ainstable in 1826, so Hannah SCOTT would probably could possibly be an aunt of Sarah WATSON's.
-
Good one Geoff :) :D
That would make Hannah and Ann sisters
Regards
Mariac
-
The ages are not 100% but 2 daughters of James WATSON and Ann CLARK ...
Hannah WATSON 1 July 1804 Wetheral
Ann WATSON 2 Oct 1814 Warwick
Hannah SCOTT in Caldbeck gives her birthplace as Wetheral in 1851 census.

Thanks for all that information, Geoff and Maria.

Hi Christine
Interested to know about your association with Ann Lennox and Sarah Watson. Sarah Watson married my g-g-grandfather John Storey in Ipswich Qld AUS in 1864 and I am looking for the whereabouts of John Storey prior to his arrival in Australia.

Hi, I am also researching this family. Unfortunately I cannot help you with your question as I am also stuck. Other names that I am researching are: Sarah Isabella Story born about 1872 who is the dau of Sarah Watson and John Storey. Lennox is a family name that is quite often given as a middle name to members of this family. I just wanted to introduce myself.

John Storey died 15 Aug 1914 buried 18 Aug 1914 age 81 buried in the same grave as Sarah Storey buried 4 May 1893.
Source: BMD Qld John Storey died 1914 age 81 Father George Storey, Mother ...... Graham, Scotland.
Source: John Oxley Library, Queensland John Storey of Gowrie Grange, Glencoe, born Scotland [they have a photograph of him].
He is one of my husband's ancestors.
