Title: WEED, Henry & Georgina Grace marriage?
Post by: Kiwi007 on Monday 09 June 08 03:11 BST (UK)
I am helping a newbie with this couple - they went to Tasmania, Australia at some stage in the early 1800's

Henry was born abt 1786 and Georgina Grace, about 1789/90. ( we have their death details)

I found a possible birth of a daughter , Sarah Mary Ann WEED b 1821 in St James Westminster.

We do not know Georgina's maiden name, so we are hoping someone may find their marriage and possibly any other children.

Any help would be most appreciated

Kind regards
Kiwi

This shows up on Pallots:

Hy Weed & Grace Dawes
Spouse Comments: 18
Marriage Date: 1810
St. Marylebone

I know you said her name was Georgina Grace, but this looks a possible.

Not sure what the "Spouse Comments: 18" means. Her age?

The IGI confirms this marriage:
Henry Weed = Grace Dawes
4 March 1810
St Marylebone,
St Marylebone Road
(extracted record)

These look like chilldren b to this couple and chr in same church:
Elizabeth b 23 Jan 1811 chr 17 Feb 1811
Sophia b 28 Oct 1814 chr 23 Nov 1814

Still unsure if this is the correct couple, but they may fit in somewhere. Not too many Weeds around.

Hi Ruskie

many thanks for the lookups - I have considered this couple and the 2 girls......however you mention 18 as the age for Grace, which makes her birth 1892 rather than a tad earlier as stated on the death cert ( not that that info is necessarily correct !).....18 is 'underage' from memory..which is perhaps why it is mentioned.....however, there are no WEEDs that fit this family's description in 1841, so they still could be the family that went to Tasmania...if only something else would come up with Georgina!

I'll see what other clues the lady has and get back to the Board later.

In the meantime, many thanks again for looking about

Cheers

Hi again Kiwi,

It does seem a possible family as they can't be found in the 1841 census.

Regarding "spouse comments: 18". I'm only guessing that this may mean she was aged 18, though it makes sense to note it if she was under age. However on the original image the number 18 is written right in the bottom corner beside the name of the church. It doesn't look as though the 18 refers to anyone or anything in particular.

Maybe someone who has more knowledge can advise further.

Where did you find Sarah Mary Ann b 1821 Westminster?

PS forgot to mention that he is a bachelor and she is a spinster, and it appears that the word lic (licence?) is also written on the page. So perhaps she was underage? Doesn't appear to be a quickie wedding as Elizabeth was born 23 Jan 1811.

Have you searched for the death certificate of the child of Henry and Georgina you are researching. What details does it give about their parentage - in particular Georgina' maiden name?

SARAH MARY ANN WEED
Birth:  10 MAR 1821
Christening:  04 APR 1821   Saint James, Westminster, London
Father:  HENRY WEED
Mother:  GEORGIANA

hello again..and thanks to you both for helping out.

The only clues I got were from IGI...I did a birth by  parent search and found Sarah Mary Ann.

If I get a chance tomorrow, I will try some shipping records to see what else might pop up and post back with anything I find

Many thanks again

Hi Kiwi

I'm currently doing look-ups at the London Metropolitan Archives and Westminster City Archives where the registers have been deposited.

I'm happy to add you to my look-up list and check these dates and places out for you on a future visit.

Having looked at the Pallots image, I am guessing that the 18 might relate to a register page number rather than an age as I would not expect to see an age in a register from 1810, the term 'minor' would have been more frequently used.

Their marriage licence was issued by 'Marriage Licence Allegations - Faculty Office', a copy of this should be at the Society of Genealogists in London (sorry I'm not a member) or through the Origins Network site, but this is a 'pay to view' record.

Hi Kiwi

I know this is a bit late but here's the marriage

Henry Weed of this parish bachelor
and Grace Dawes of the same parish
were married in this church by licence
this 4th day of March in the year 1810
by me Thos Clare CurateThis marriage was solumnized between us
Henry Weed (signed his name)
Grace Dawes (signed her name)
in the presence of
Mary Dance (signed her name)
Robert James (signed his name)

no mention of Grace being a minor, don't know what 18 refers to

From St James Westminster baptism register

1821
4th April Sarah Mary Ann, (daughter of) Henry & Georgiana Weed of 2 Cross Street, Waiter

Does this help?
