Hi, I would love to hear from anyone who may have information on Hyslops from Penpont.
We have links going back to -
Andrew Hyslop born 1759 wife Isabella Reid.
His son John born 1790 married Jane (Halbert we think info here would be great)
His son Adam born 1819 marries Jannet Brown (cant find marriage record)
His son Robert born 1857 marries Nicholas Bryden they then move away to Durrisdeer.
We know that John was an Ag Labourer at Holmbank (Info on this would be nice)
Adam was a tea dealer address Honeyhole (Info on this ?)
According to death records most appear to be in Penpont Graveyard so we would love to know lair details and if there are any headstones?
We also are related to Thomas and Richard Hyslop who are named on the war memorial at Penpont but know little of their family history.
Any bit of information even about the addresses would be fantastic, and I thank you in advance for your time.

I doubt if this is of any use, but I know a bit about the Hyslops of Lochrutton (a line of John Hyslop s back to JohnHyslop b? and Christian Crocket b, 1798) of Southpark Farm
I suspect, but havent proved yet that they were related to the Penpont Hyslops. BUt I have stumbled across your Hyslops during my research (John and Adam in particular)
Incidentally I had a friend who was a penpont Hyslop but have sadly lost touch...

Hi Tracey,
Christian Crocket & Southpark farm aren't names I've came across in my research but thats not to say theyre not linked.
I would be interested in knowing what you have on John & Adam. Especially Adam as he is giving me a hard time. I can find his death record which lists his mother as Jane .......Halbert? I think but I could be reading the maiden name wrong so i would love more proof of this. Also I cant find any marriage record for Adam and Jannet Brown but I'm sure they must have married in Penpont as they lived there beforehand and remained there all their days.
Thanks for replying

There is a photo of the grave stone of Thomas and Richard Hyslop. It is near the bottom of that thread.

Hi Betty,
Thank you ever so much for the link.
I hadn't seen the gravestone only the memorial cenotaph which they are named on. It was really lovely to see all these relations on the stone especially as my mother remembers going to durisdeer to spend time with GG Nicholas.

Hi Fiona
I had a quick look in at the Dumfries Library today and found the following grave stone inscription in Penpont. It as the name Helbert and Brown so looks like your ancestors.
In memory of Jean Helbert spouse to John Hyslop, who died at Newhouse 7 Sep. 1828 aged 50 years.
And of Mary Brownrig, second wife of John Hyslop, who died 12 May 1838 aged 47 years, the above John Hyslop died at Holmbank, 28 Nov. 1858 aged 67 years, Isabella Hyslop daughter of the above died at Penpont, 4 Jan. 1873 aged 59 years, John Hyslop son of Adam Hyslop, who died at Honeyhole, 18 May 1869 aged 16 years, the above Adam Hyslop died at Honeyhole, 16 Nov. 1885 aged 66 years. Janet Brown wife of the above Adam Hyslop died 28 Dec. 1901 aged 83 years, also Janet Farrow, granddaughter of the above Adam Hyslop who died at Honeyhole, 5 Feb 1931 aged 59 years, Isabella Hyslop died at Honeyhole, 30 Dec. 1935 aged 88 years, daughter of the above Adam Hyslop, also James Hyslop died 19 Dec 1943 aged 95 years.
There is also a photograph of Richard and Thomas in the local paper of May 1917.
If you have not already got these could you give me your email on a PM. The micro fiche is not so good so I will take a digital.
There are quite a few entries in the newspapers for Hyslop. If there was anything in particular or address that you could give me to help indicate which might be your ancestors I will extract entries for you.
It is okay if you don't want to give me your email I will send them through the site.

Jane Hyslop, born c1842, daughter of Adam Hyslop and Janet Brown, married my 2x great grandfather John Telfer in 1861 at Durisdeer.
She died 1876 at Kirkbride, Durisdeer. She was his first wife ( not my line), and had 6 children that I know of.

John Hyslop's brother Edward was my great grandmother Fora Hyslop's grandfather. my mother was born in Penpont.
Honeyhole is an isolated cottage on a farm called Auchenbainzie. It lies between Marr Burn Road and Scaur Water Road, north east of Penpont.
My grandmother used to say that if you stood at the gate of Penpont graveyard and threw a stone it would hit one of my relations! Plenty of Hyslops lived in Penpont area.

Hi There,
Thank you for your information, I'm interested to know which John Hyslop you refer to as I have 3 in my tree - John CC1735 which we know very little about. Then his grandson 1790 - 1858 who married Jane Helbert and then Mary Brownrigg. The 3rd was my grandfather so i know its not him.
We have visited Pentpont and your right there are about 20 Hyslop graves all in the one area each with many interments. I have photographs of most as well as of honeyhole cottage and Auchinbenzie farm. Honeyhole is now 3 converted into 1 cottage and is home to the local gamekeeper.
You didnt mention where you live now but if you wish a copy of these photos or indeed any information from the gravestones then pop me a PM with your email and I will send them to you.
Thanks again

Hi Fiona
I have John Hyslop born c1730 in Durisdeer married to Agnes Ker. Their son Andrew married Isabella Reid. I don't have much more on this John.
Thanks for the offer of photos. We are off to Penpont and Keir tomorrow for a search-again!! I live in Fife.
I am unsure how to PM. This is a new site for me. I have spent a fortune on Scotland's People website.
regards,
Glenda

I have a Helen Hyslop b. abt. 1824 d. 1864 in Penpont daughter of a Robert Hyslop who married a first cousin 4x removed Robert McNaught. Both Helen and her husband died in Penpont and he was a schoolteacher. Don't have much on the Hyslops and they're not a direct link.
