Title: Suffolk Convict Wives
Post by: boxingboy on Sunday 08 June 08 17:01 BST (UK)
I have a convict John Redgen who i know was transported to Australia in 1833. His wife also appears there but i'm trying to find out how/when she got there. Any suggestions?

It might be worth looking in the parish poor law records.

It was cheaper to pay for a wife's (& children) passage to join her husband in Australia than to pay parish relief for several years.

It's possible that she or her relatives had enough money to pay for her passage.
