Title: Jones family-Cleobury Mortimer
Post by: Bonnie65 on Friday 06 June 08 23:25 BST (UK)

Can anyone help me find out a bit more about this family.

David Jones married Elizabeth Stokes 31st Dec 1792 Cleobury Mortimer.

As far as I know they had two children

William b.1793 C.M.

Jane b. 1795 C. M.

Jane was my GG Grandmother so I know she went on to marry William Russell.

I'd like to find out more about the family in Cleobury Mortimer. If David and Elizabeth had anymore children.
Who were David and Elizabeth's parents.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,
my family were also from Cleobury mortimer and while searching today,I could not believe it,I was able to print off a whole register of none conformists births,17 pages for free, you should find it under,"Shropshire None Conformist Registers" but i have a couple of answers for you,
1) James son of David Jones and Elizabeth Stokes, born 2nd feb 1806
2) Elizabeth Stokes born 26 May 1774.parents William and Esther Stokes it says of "Hongar(?Hungary)Hill" in the parish of Cleobury Mortimer.

Hi Joyce341

Thankyou for the info. It's fantastic. I went onto that site but I can't seem to find the list of names.
I've got the list of towns and the different churches but nothing happens when I click on them.
What am I doing wrong.

Hi Joyce341

I found that David and Elizabeth had about ten children all together. They didn't hang about in those days did they.
It's fascinating looking through the pages at the same names coming up. it seems they all stood as godparents for each other.
What was Mamleg Hall? Were they catholics? I can't find anything out about it.

Mamleg Hall,
is Mawley hall,it is still there in Shropshire, was owned by the Blount Family,St Mary.s was their church, later name changed to St elizabeths Church,I would love to vist it,it is opened during the year,I think from April to September or July, visits are by appointment only.
Have you looked on IGI family search.
if you go to search engine you can find info on the Blounts.also on Mawley Hall,In IGI it has all my family as Mamleg Hall.

Sorry i forgot, yes they were all catholics (none conformists)one of the Blounts apparently was put in the tower of London for refuseing to make armour for croimwell, dont know how true this is.they seem to have had a large forge,my family from Richard down were connected to blacksmiths for quite a while.

So they got baptised in St. Mary's church. But it was connected to Mawley Hall.
I noticed that you have Parkes as one of your Surnames. I have Joseph and Sarah Parkes as witnesses at Lucy Jones and Thomas Russells marriage.
Is this one of your Parkes?
Lucy Jones was my GG Grandmothers Janes' sister and she married Thomas Russell who I think was related to William Russell, my Gg Grandfather.
Sarah Parkes was Sarah Russell.
I bet you are confused now.

Thanks for that oly.

What a lot of Jones. David Jones must have been born elsewhere which is a pity.
I wonder what it meant (infant of David Jones in the forest).
Also after Williams birth in 1793 it says prly. Do you know what that means?

Hi nthack

I couldn't find a birth of Thomas Jones On the Mawley Hall registers but there is a Samuel Jones who acted as godfather twice in 1780.
First to Joseph Brown, son of Peter and Mary Brown of Broomfield.
Second to Theresa Overton daughter of Edward and Winefred Overton of Burrington.
The godmothers were Ann Evans and Hannah Priest.

Thank you Bonnie for a quick reply.

Thomas's birth is in the Cleobury register for 1778. I'm not sure whether Samuel was from Cleobury or not, but his birth would be about 1750. There are several on IG in Shropshire.

Thanks anyway

Hi Oly

is there a marriage for William Jones on the Shropshire registers.
He was born 1792 Cleobury so  I guess about 1812 onwards.

Hello Bonnie65
Who are the other 64??

The Parish Registers of Shropshire that I have are mainly 1500ish up to 1812.
I am not familiar with Shropshire being a Yorky but some of my ancestors strayed out of the Kingdom of Yorkshire.
Over a hundred William Jones in Shropshire in the years my records cover. Good job I have a good search engine. I copy and paste from the indexes but have to add the place in some instances, e.g. "In Alberbury"
Good luck I think you need it.

13 May 1806 William Jones, of Leebotwood, and Elizabeth Higs.
18 May 1810 William Jones, of Buttington, & Margret Hodgkis. Wit.--William Passon
& John Rogers.
30 Sep 1811 William Jones & Elizth Teece, lic. Wit.--John Jones & John Rogers. In Alberbury
31 Dec 1811 William Jones & Elizabeth Ford. Wit: Mary Jones & John Griffiths.  In Westbury
30 Mar 1809 William Jones & Mary Pumford. Wit: Francis Jones, Elizabeth Jones.. In  Burford
02 Jul 1827 William Jones, of Cleoby. Mortr., & Elizth. Walker. By Spencer D. Wilde, Curate. In Kinlet
14 Sep 1820 William Jones & Ann Roberts. By Thomas Dixon, Curate of Wistanstow. Wit: John Espe, Anne Espe. In Kinlet
