My Grandfather was born 20th July 1877 in Stanton on Wolds sub district Ratcliffe-on-Trent Reg district Bingham Nottinghamshire.
I cannot read the maiden name of his Mother on the Birth certificate & wonder if anyone can look up the record for me.
His name was John James Best ...Father Richard Best occupation excavator...Mother Eliza ?
Any help or guidance greatly appreciated

Hi Linda
It is not possible to look up the birth but you could try one of the following options
If you have recently bought the certificate from the GRO you could email them and ask for clarification
As you can read his mothers christian name - use freebmd to find his parents marriage
If it a certificate that has been in the family for a while - you could scan it and then upload just the part with the mothers maiden name and we can see if we can decipher it for you
Where is this family in 1881 as I can't find a match

Hi Carole,
I bought the certificate in Feb of this year. It is not a very good print. I thought that the name of the mother was Eliza Hennyman but it could be Honeyman or even Hengman. I cannot look up the marriage because I don't think they married, I have looked on BMD for every Richard Best & cannot find a match.
Thats a good idea to e-mail the Gen.Reg Office.
Many thanks for your help

Hi Linda
Make sure you quote the PAS number in your email - top right hand side of the certificate alongside "Application number"
