A W Ewings military records in full are on Ancestry and include the following:
Former trade: stud groom
Enlisted in London 20/9/1915
Home address given as: 41 Pocock? street, Blackfriars, london
Was in Royal Engineers Reg No. 129209
Seems to have pretty unhealthy:
1916 gassed - in hospital in Manchester
30/11/16 - 3/1/17 Military hospital Gravesend (had been in france)
10/10/18 - 28 /2/19 springbow-woodside hospital,Glasgow then trnsfered to Wandsworth.
This was for Chronic Epididymitis of the right testicle and resulted in him being transfered to the reserves on 28/3/1919 because not fit for marching.
place of birth given as; Angus, fifeshire.
Worth looking for census in london i think as given as home address in 1915.

Mistake - Angus is not Fifeshire - that may be why you can't find him if putting in wrong info.
birth place in military records def. Angus

Hi ozmouse
His birth is registerd on Scotlands people as:
Anthony Wilson EWINGS
1889 Arngask, ( Fife or Perthshire or Kinross) *
*It's indexed under all 3
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/FIF/parishes/Arngask/index.htm
Until 15th May 1891, the parish of Arngask was situated partly in the county of Fife, partly in the county of Kinross and partly in the county of Perth. On that date, various changes to the parish and county boundaries were made. From that date the whole parish of Arngask was included in the county of Perth.
Obtaining this certificate will name at least his mother, and hopefully his father!
Cheers

On the Military record, in the margins of page 3, his Next of Kin is given as: Miss KIRKHAM of 41 Pocock St London SE1.

couldn't wait:

Mother: Charlotte Jane M.S Wilson
They were married Aug 27th 1878 Connor, Cty Antrim, Ireland

Cool! DIddy ;D That was nice of you to do ;D
I was just posting up the following, so some is bit redundant now!
If he's in Scotland or England in those 2 Census , he's hiding well!
Can you spot anything at all Diddy, I can't! ;D ;D ;D
Between 1881 and 1920, his is the only EWING* in Arngask indexed on SP.
Wonder if his father was Military, and wasn't long there?
Or he was illigitimate and his mother married before the 1891, wherein AW is under a different surname (still can't find any Anthony anything, though!)
His POB is all over the place, at first glance - however:
On Military Records, it does say on page 17 born Angus Fifeshire - but I would hazard a guess that the official writing on the form thought he heard "Angus" and in fact AW actually said "Arngask" ?? Said out loud, I can see how it happened!
On an earlier page, his POB is listed just as Perthshire, Scot.
In the Australia National Archives site, he is listed as born 13 Jun 1889 FIfeshire.

Do you have his death certificate, ozmouse?

ha working well today:
Found Samuel ewings as follows:
1881 census in Duddingston portobello, midlothian:
Samuel 28 jobbing gardener
Charlotte J 25
Samuel 1
Charlotte under 2 mths
so looked insp - births Duddingston portobello 1880 - 1890
1881 Charlotte
1882 Rose
1883 Elizabeth
1885 Henry davidson
still nosign of AW in census >:(

Hi ozmouse
Further to Diddy's find in the 1881 Census:
In that 1881 Census, the parents Samuel & Charlotte are stated born Ireland.
The children Samuel & Charlotte are both stated born Duddingston, Portobello
There appears to be a big gap between Harry 1885 and Anthony 1889 - enough for perhaps 2 more children.
Your AW stated he was C of E, on his Army records.
The marriage of Samuel EWINGS and Charlotte Jane WILSON is listed on the Emerald Ancestors site:
http://www.emeraldancestors.com/
You can find it via the free search, but to see the full details you have to pay - the cheapest option being GBP 9.00 for 1 month access. But by doing so you may discover their parents names - though I'm not actually sure what you can expect to find on the full record ....
Like Diddy, I've had a good hunt for them in 1891/1901 without success. I also couldn't see any deaths for either Samuel or Charlotte snr in Scotlands People. Can't find any WW1 record for son Harry. Can't see them on any immigration lists to the USA. But I did come across this followiing - not sure how long the shot is!
In the Canadian WW1 Soldiers Database is the following:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/index-e.html
Harry EWING born 1885 Donegal Ireland, and is C of E.
Address given in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
He was drafted in 1917 and the form is dated Dec 1917.
It also states he is married, 1st April 1917. Yet, it gives his Next of Kin as :
Father Anthony EWING of Treherne Donegal Irleand
I cannot see any marriage for this Harry on the Manitoba database:
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
And I can't find anything else of this Canadian based Harry....
My thought was, perhaps this Canadian Harry is a cousin to your AW. And that your AW's father Samuel and Canadian Harry's father Anthony, may be brothers.....?
Cheers

Many.. Many thanks to you all.... that helps a great deal.
Found so far:
married Beatrice Kirkham 1918
Child: Jeannie B Ewing b. 1920 Lambeth
both Anthony and Beatrice listed on 1931 and 1936 electoral roll in Bass, Vic
Beatrice death listed in Eden, NSW 1865
Haven't found a death for Anthony or anything for Jeannie Ewing. Looked at the Canadian Harry Ewing, I suppose he is a possibility.

He is a definatley a possible, I don't know if he is the same one I can pick up on the 1916 Electoral roll but if he is then his wife is not with him, later electoral rolls give him a wife named Elizabeth.
Many thanks DD and everyone who has helped...much appreciated.

Where possible it is a good idea to include links when copying information verbatim from other sites - It then allows folks to extend their knowledge of what is available where and resolves any issues re the source and validity of data provided
The WWII information from Australia is from the nominal roll and is available here
http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/name.asp#searchtabs
It will also lead to the page where the service certificate can be produced
War service information is also available on the Aust National archives site
Search as a guest.

I assume the travel information comes from findmypast, but as I don't subscribe to same I wouldn't be sure about this.
The passenger information for the trips on the Strathaird and Runic are also on the National Archives site
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx
Search as a guest and then select passenger index
