I've just been given some old photos and amongst them was this one. Judging by the age of my g uncle (top row far right), I'm guessing it was taken somewhere between 1902 and 1906.
I hope this might be of interest to someone

What a treasure!!! You are so fortunate to have that picture. My grandfather and his brother were in Chorlton I'm guessing between 1900-1907 but neither are in that picture--DARN!!! that is likely a picture of boys in a single cottage. When I wrote to Barnardo's I was fortunate to receive pictures of each of them---the pictures were cut out from a picture of a grouping of boys similar to the one which you put up. I would like to have had the whole picture but was quite happy to receive the cut outs.... thanks for putting that picture up--- they do look like such angels, don't they...

They do look like little angels who've been scrubbed up especially for the occasion - although they don't look too pleased about it...

Interesting, Chorlton is a fair way from Styal. Styal is situated south of Manchester Airport, a nice little village, the local pub is the Ship Inn, there is a village shop/post office too, plus Styal School where my daughter went.
There are some cottages close to the school that are owned by the National Trust, nice country walks in the woods leading to the river Bollin, well worth visit.

A married couple in my family were both in Styal Childrens home in the 1930s at the same time but did not know each other there.... this place later became Styal prison.....
Is this the same place as Chorlton Union Cottages Homes- Styal ?

I'm not sure it might be, I'll try and check it out for you but it might be a day or two, there are a few old cottages around there but the prison does sound more feasable.
I lived on Altrincham Road in Styal for a short time, (The Old Cottage) was built in or around 1760 but refurbished in 1930's, it was very cold, it had oak beams in the ceiling 2 living rooms small kitchen and 3 bedrooms though one was very small and a bathroom plus a large garden with an orchard.

That site definatety resolves the question of how the names Chorlton and Styal Childrens home are linked.. I had imajined a much harsher environment but the builings seem to show quite a pleasant place.
Intersesting photographs..
My wifes granparents died within a few years of each other leaving several children.. some old enough to look after themselves, some adopted and the young went in the childrens home..
The youngest of the children was a girl taken in by a single lady as a companion... she was not allowed to see her siblings but she never married and remained with the lady all her life despite having a successful career in nursing..
The last of the children she died recently.

I should think that many children were taken away from the home by well meaning adults and the management of the home may also have thought that it would be in the childs best interest... the family name was Reade

I know these are old posts but I am very interested in the photograph of the boys in Styal Homes. My father and his brother and sister were in Styal 1908 to 1912. I have contacted Manchester in the past and all they would tell me was where they had been admitted from. My sister and I would dearly love a photo, especially of my father. The earliest one of him we have was taken on his wedding day in 1927. There is a little boy in the group photo who we think has a likeness of him but maybe that is wishful thinking. Does anyone know where I can write?
