Can SKS please have a look at Castle Acre parish register and let me know the father and mother named on the baptism of GEORGE SCULPHER Born 1831ish.There is another born 1821ish.
They both marry a Mary and I am desperate to find which one of them belongs to my tree ;D
Can I also ask for the marriage of GEORGE SCULPHER to Mary ?? in 1855/6 in Castle acre to be looked at and the details noted please.
Many thanks

Hi.
Looking through the 1851 census index I see;
George (bn c1819) & Mary had Robert & Isaac. Living in Castle Acre in 1851.
George son of Charles was born in King's Lynn in c1838, Charles was born in Castle Acre.
Two older Georges were living in Castle Acre & Rougham.
There was no George born c1831 in Castle Acre on the 1851 census index. Are you sure he was a Sculpher? What was his mother's maiden name?
I have not got access to the registers, just the odd Norfolk thing on cd.

Hi Teddybear,
I too search high and low for him on the 1851.
The one you have found is inconsistant with the one on 1861 - 1901 which is definatly my GEORGE SCULPHER.
The 'other' one is 10 years wrong in age on 1851 when my GEORGE SCULPHER appears on 1861 with the correct family members.
The only hope I have of proving one way or the other is to find the marriages of both and or the births of the children of George on 1851 and a child on 1861.
Can someone really lose track of their age by 10 years when so young? ???
The wife is also 33 on 1851 and 28 on 1861.Mary on 1851 and Mary Ann on 1861.
As I live in Devon I am hoping someone will be going to the RO or have a CD that can help me.
Any other ideas welcome ;D

Hi
Wills can be very helpful.
You should be able to see the precis of the wills (after 1858) if there are any, in Devon. Do you know when any of the Sculphers died?
That is always worth trying.
Castle Acre was a den of iniquity in the C19th so it would be quite possible that he was born before his parents married.
I will try to get a look at the 1841 which I have on cd but it is very bad.
Best of luck

I do know when some Sculphers died but they all moved to the London area so thats not much help.
I would have to go to the nearest RO which is in the city which is 55 miles away to get any information as the local one only has parish registers for Devon in it.
I have a few hilarious extracts from a policemans notebook containing SCULPHERs in the 1920s.They were quite a lot.I understand that it was a rogues paradise.Maybe thats why my lot moved to Bermondsey ;D maybe they were a 'good' lot!
Many thanks for your help

Hello Debbi!
Was this Census info you posted from 1851? I have George SCULFER, b. 22 Jun 1828, Castleacre; d. 3 Sep 1899, St. Olave Southwark, Surrey; m. Mary HOOKS. I was just about to respond to your enquiry when I saw that you found George. Didn't know if you had the complete dates or not. I have more on Sculfers, if you still need any input.
Regards,
Pat

Hi Debbie,
I should have mentioned that Mary's name was Mary Ann Hooks. (I have two files for this family, because of the variations in name spellings.) I see from 1881 Census, Bermondsey, that George and Mary A had six children living at home:
1881, St James Southwark, Bermondsey
Goerge Sculpher head Mar 53 Foreman Nfk Castleacre
Mary A. " wife Mar 48 DressMkr " "
Daniel? " son 19 Labourer Sry Peckham
Robert " son 17 Sailor " Battersea
Alfred " son 14 Messnger " Rotherhithe
Walter " son 12 " "
George " son 8 " "
Anne Mary " daur 5 " Horsely Down
George's parents, Robert and Susan (Smith) Sculpher are shown in 1841, Castleacre with two of their boys, George and James. Between the two boys, they had Charles (b/d 1831); also had Emily, Charles (2) Robert, Emily (2), John and Georgeanna. There may be more. (Addition: This census also has Emala 6, Charles 4, Robt 1 - sorry, I didn't look carefully)
The problem with this family, and the reason they're so hard to find is (1) they spell their names in a variety of ways - SCULFER, SCULFAR, SCULFOR, SCULFORD, SCULFORTHE, SCULTHORPE, SCULPHER, etc, etc; and (2) They originated in the Suffolk area, esp. Bury St. Edmunds and then began appearing in Norfolk. Sculfer in Norfolk converged with another prolific Norfolk family, Powley. Quite a few of them can be found in Norfolk and Suffolk probate records (Ancestry has these.)
I have some charted material for both families if you need anything.
Regards,
Pat

Hi Debbie. My name is Robert Sculpher. My ancesters also come from Castle Acre. My lot mostly ended up in Rotherhithe working on the tunnel. Would be interested to know what you have in the policemans note book. Did you know about Inspector Sculpher in the Channel Islands in the second world war?
