Title: Beckley (see thread) baptism please
Post by: keebleancestors on Tuesday 03 June 08 13:59 BST (UK)
Susan PAYNE in 1809. Horton is a funny parish isn't it? It seems to straddle two counties, with Studley in Berks, how does that work? Susan gave her birthplace as Studley on one census, if that helps. I've tried asking for it there though, to no avail. Been looking for this lady's parents for years now.

Hi

My geography isn't great in this area but are we talking about Horton cum Studley in Oxfordshire, close to the boundaries of Buckinghamshire?
The only other Studley I can find is in Warwickshire and when I G***le Horton, Bucks it brings up the one near Windsor on the Bucks/Berks/Middlesex/Surrey boundaries

That's the problem, in a nutshell. Right there.

In 1861, 1871, and 1881 her birthplace is given as"Horton, Bucks". But in 1851 it was given as "Studley, Berks". My first question is "make your mind up woman, which county were you born in?" Then I found Horton cum Studley. But Berkshire has morphed into Oxfordshire with the county boundary changes so...I give up. I'm leaving it to the locals to figure out.

Hi

I'm assuming we are talking about Susan Cross - if so seems more likely to be Horton cum Studley. As you said boundary changes!  I live nearer to the other Horton but I'll keep looking.

Yes, she married John Cross, so shows up as Susan Cross on the censuses.

If it's any help, Horton cum Studley parish records appear on one of the CDs I bought from Oxon FHS but they only start in 1880. A note at the start states that 'for earlier registers, see Beckley'.

Unfortunately, I don't have the CD with Beckley PRs on but perhaps another Rootschatter will have them - or they are available on CD or fiche from Oxon FHS.

Oooh, Jill, that could explain a lot. I've enquired about this one on various boards and never get a reply. This could be why. Thank you for that!

Beckley seems to be one of the few Oxfordshire parishes covered on the IGI. There's a baptism for a Susannah Payne there 6 May 1810 d/o James & Sophia.

Any good?

Hmm. How big is Beckley? If it's small (I've never heard of it) and the IGI have extracted all of it, I'd say that's pretty hopeful! I'll have a good look at that one, thanks Jill!

Beckley is small as also Horton which joined with Studley. One church was built later than the other and for a time all records were kept at one of them (I believe Horton).  In the census you may well find Horton is spelt incorrectly and i suggest you try the sound like option. I had a case like this. On the county problem is the Headington scenario. Now a suburb of Oxford but at one time keeping records for surrounding parts of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Berkshire began south of the Thames around Oxford and confusion could be those records that amalgamated Berks Bucks and Oxon.  The location of Beckley is marked by a television transmitter which is nearby and visible from the M40. I am sure Oxfordshire FHS could help you if you have not cleared your query by now.
