Hi folk,
I am trying to trace my Millthorpe roots back beyond my current 1859 limit.
I have a Joseph Millthorpe born in the Barnsley area c.1859 (according to 1891 census). Affraid I have no more data on him until he got married to Annie (Turner?) in the 1880's. She was from Swinton, Rotherham, and that is where they settled and had a family. He appears on the 1891 Rotheham census aged 32.
I would be greatful for any possible information (I know it is a long shot with such little data) from the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census returns for Barnsley and Rotherham. He was more than likely still in the Barnsley area at that time of the 1861 census, but could be in either census place after that.
Thanks for your help,
Ian

Thanks Nicky. That ties in with information I have just found from another source. It appears that his birthplace was indeed Hillam and not Barnsley, as per the 1891 return. It is thought that Hillam was transcribed to Higham, Barnsley, in error.
So any possible information for the family in Hillam (near Castleford) in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns would be much appreciated.

Hi
Your Joseph is NOT in Barnsley/Silkstone/Ardsley in 1851.
At least you can cross it off the list!

Hi,
How common were misspellings in civic records, as the Milthorp name seems to be spelled in at least a half a dozen variations. Was there a single original name that was changed over the years or were there several different families who adopted different spellings in order to differentiate themselves from their neighbours?
