Hi can anyone help me with a query. A few weeks ago I came across a site called Pitmen - all about miners of Whitehaven. There was someone on there who was going to help me with some info about my Richardson/tatters links, and their mining history, but I went on the other day and found the site has been taken down!!
Does anyone know what's happened to it or how I am likely to get in touch with someone who may have access to the info.
Cheers

You could try www.dmm.org.uk as they have allthe records for deaths in all the whitehaven pits. Check the left panel.

Nadine,
I'm up in the area (in Cumbria) quite often at the moment, and if there is anything you need me to look at, let me know.
There is a mining museum in Whitehaven - was it anything to do with that?

Thank you Bob and Trystan for responding,
The one ancestor in particluar did not die or have an accident at Whitehaven, but did work in the coal mines in Whitehaven before moving onto Durham. I am on the DMM site regularly looking for info as most of my Richardson ancestors were miners, some of whom were in Whitehaven and then moved onto Durham (Usworth, Houghton, Chester le Street, Biddick and many more), from about 1850 ish. I also have Glendennings/Glendinnings who were miners in Durham. The reason I'm interested in Whitehaven particularly for Jonathan Richardson is a bit long winded, but here we go.
Jonathan was born in Tanfield Durham, 1817, the illegitimate son of one Sarah Richardson. I don't know what happened between his birth and his marriage in 1837, whether he was in Durham or Whitehaven, I can't find any records, but he married Mary Ann Gribbin in 1837 in Whitehaven. They married at St James and he was listed as a coal miner at the time. I have been unable to trace Jonathans mother, and there are no fathers details listed on his parish marriage record but I have found a link that appears to imply that his mother Sarah was originally from Whitehaven. Jonathan and Mary had a son Robert, who married Mary Ann Tatters, also from Whitehaven, and who it seems was also from a mining family. Her sister Sarah married Roberts brother Daniel. Also, if you go back 2 generations (to Mary Anns grandparents) in the Tatters family there is a link by marriage to a Richardson family who have a daughter called Sarah, born about the right time for Jonathan's mother Sarah.
I was told that the Tatters and Richardsons lived close to each other in Whitehaven and both families worked closely in the mines.
Anyway, the long and short of it is if I can find some information about Jonathan Richardson in the Whitehaven mines, prior to his marriage in 1837, it may help me to trace his mother/next of kin/address and help me on my way with my research.
I hit this brick wall months and months ago and would love to knock it down, although most people tell me that tracing the single mothers of illegitimate children, particularly pre-1837 is almost impossible. The mining link is my last resort really.
Any help, even the tiniest possibility would be gratefully received.

Hello Nadine:
The Pitmen.co.uk site was removed as a personal decision -- and a difficult one at that. While I ran it, the actual domain name and website belonged to another gentleman who was unable to keep up with the technical changes I needed. I am taking a little time off, but do plan to register a new site in the next little while.
I do not have any information about Jonathan Richardson, I only have connections to the Tatters line. If you are interested I can send you some documentation about William Tatters. I had posted on pitmen, the physical descriptions of several Tatters miners as per the 1841 medical survey. Not sure if you copied this to your files at the time, but I can re-send if necessary.
Amanda Garraway Roberts
PS: Thanks Geoff for contacting me about Nadine's post.

Hi Amanda,
Thanks for replying. I can understand your dilemma about the domain name/technical updating etc. (we run a business that does websites and associated e-marketing).
I don't think I saw the 1841 medical info you mentioned, perhaps it was before I found the site. If you could send me anything you may think is relevant I would be grateful, as it is now looking as though there may be a further Richardson link within the Tatters line that may help me track down the family of Sarah Richardson (Jonathan Richardson mother).
I know this is a bit of a long shot but William Tatters who was married to Sarah Milby - his parents were William Tatters and Mary Richardson. Mary had a sister Sarah, and other siblings who match details already on my files. As there seems to be a reasonable amount of interaction between the Tatters and Richardsons (2 of Jonathans sons married Tatters girls - Mary Ann and Sarah) I am hoping that if I can find out about the Tatters family in Whitehaven, I will kill 2 birds with one stone, so to speak. Find out about their lives and the mining history (which may give me some indication of my Richardson family's lives), but also possibly clear up some anomolies in the family line too.
My direct email, if that's easier is nadine.thomasTREEsky.com (replace the word tree with an @ symbol)
Once again thanks for getting back to me - enjoy your time off.

Hello
My name is Ryan Tully and I am the 3rd great grandson of William Tatters. 3rd great grandson of Jonathan Richardson (as described in this thread). I have been trying to research Jonathan's side, but I never got anywhere, I had a rest and tried the Appleby side. And am now back to the Tatters/Richardson side of the family.
I am interested in the 1841 medical descriptions of the Tatters' who were down the mines.
I have recently received the birth certificate of Jonathan Richardson's granddaughter which describes her as being born at Red Rows, Witton Gilbert, Edmondsley in County Durham. And somewhere on the internet I ame across someone with Jonathan Richardson in theirfamily tree, and this person has that Jonathan Richardson died at Red Rows. So I presume they were living there at the time when Mary Richardson was born in 1874.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Regards,
Ryan

I think you need to post again before I can PM you.
If you can see a green scroll on the left, you can PM her. Two posts are probably enough to start the PM system. :)

Geoff,
Thanks, it's there now. I don't know what was wrong last night (er I mean this morning) the scroll was definitley not there. I'll PM bessie.

Morning, I am descended from a Sarah Reed, the daughter of James and Mary Read from Whitehaven. (Bounty immigration information). On Sarah's death certificate (Grafton, NSW) it is stated that her father was James Reed, mine manager. Her husband (John Casson) was alive at the time so the information it should be reasonably accurate. However, the informant was her son and he did not know the first name of Sarah's father. The mine manager could have been an exaggeration. It appears that a James Read married a Mary White in 1798 in the Old Chapel, St Nicholas, Whitehaven. However, I cannot find anything else about this James Read. I cannot find them in the census, so they may have both died before 1841. I checked a will for a Mary Reed, widow from 1837. Her executor was her son Thomas Reed, Mariner. Other executors were James Reed engineer and Thompson Reed, builder. Not sure what the relationship of James and Thompson were to Mary. James and Mary Reed's eldest son was a Thomas, so this may be Mary. There was a James Reed, engineer, born about 1810, who died in Whitehaven in 1841. This is probably the one who was an executor of the will. I cannot find a father for him, so perhaps he is a son of the James Reed I am looking for and Mary is Mary White.
Sarah and John Casson, who was a blacksmith, sailed on the Helen in March 1841, from Liverpool to Sydney. There was an add in the Carlisle Journal.
Would appreciate any assistance/suggestions. Thanks, Natalie
