Title: Leicester Locations
Post by: Steve C on Saturday 31 May 08 18:45 BST (UK)
Just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to confirm whether or not the following locations are still in existance in Leicester today.

Abbey Park Road.

Beatrice Road.

Bow Street.

Gresham Street.

If there are postcodes available for these locations that would be great ;D.

I`m researching my family tree and wondering if these locations are in close proximity :-\ :-\ :-\

Many thanks in advance for all replies. Steve ;)

Thanks for the information in your reply Pauline ;D

Thanks for your replies diddymiller ;D ;D I did as Pauline suggested and also found Abbey Park Road at LE4 and Beatrice Road at LE3.

Unfortunately I couldn`t find Bow Street or Gresham Street, so I assume they no longer exist :-\ :( :-\ which is one of the reasons I placed my original post in the hope someone with local knowledge would confirm.

Many thanks Steve

You don't indicate WHEN they WERE in existence....

If it's census, then look at surrounding streets for instance...

Post by: Steve C on Sunday 01 June 08 14:50 BST (UK)
SORRY.................should have perhaps mentioned a date previously but unfortunately nothing from a Census so can`t do a comparison. :( :(

The period was from around the 1920 era which is when one of my ancestors sadly died. Unfortunately I have no other information apart from the addresses I`ve recently learnt about.

I would be interested to learn a little more about the area for example Were they mainly terraced houses? Was there any Industry in the area? as there was a mention of printing or printers :-\ :-\

Thanks Steve

Did the streets not then exist when the census was taken?

just found this - might be a lead :
"The following morning, he rode out of the city over the old Bow Bridge on his way to fight in what became known as the Battle of Bosworth – the last battle of the Wars of the Roses. Legend has it that his spur hit a stone on the bridge as he crossed it, and an old wise woman among the crowd prophesised that his head would strike the same stone on the way back.

On August 22nd, after fighting bravely to defend his crown, Richard was killed in battle and Henry Tudor became King of England. Richard’s naked body was slung over a horse and brought back to Leicester, entering the city across Bow Bridge. His head allegedly struck the stone as the old woman had predicted. "

I'll try and find where this was

ok should have read further first:

As you walk from the Holiday Inn down St Augustine Road, Bow Bridge is the second bridge you come to on the right hand side of the road. The old bridge was demolished in 1861 – the ironwork of the present Bow Bridge depicts the white rose of York, the Tudor rose, the White Boar emblems and Richard’s motto ‘Loyaulte me Lie’. A memorial stone is situated near to the bridge, mounted on the wall.

This is in what is now LE3 !!

(just googled bow street, leicester, leic - story about Richard 111)

Post by: diddymiller on Sunday 01 June 08 15:43 BST (UK)
ok here we go again: googled gresham street - was brewing area apparently:

The maltings were located in Gresham Street (off Belgrave Road). The "eagle" symbol was a common sight on many Leicester pubs.
The maltings were owned in 1866 by prominent Leicester maltster George Harrison. He had also owned the Gresham Street maltings of the L.B.M.

belgrave road is now main rd into leicester from the NE - Melton Rd A607 (locally known as Little India) can be foumd on most maps i would think. just off to the top right of one i posted.

If you google Gresham street, leicester, leics  there is a family tree listed for a family living there  - you name no names so it might not be connected.

Thanks very much for your time and the contents of your replies Diddy, very much appreciated ;D ;D ;D ;D

There is certainly plenty of information for me to digest ;)

The surnames I`m after are Hall and Neal.

Initial findings suggest that both familes have moved about a bit before the 1920`s locations. One family were based in Eaton Street and another in what looks like Westbourne Road but thats another story..................................for another day

Hiya Mike,

Good to hear from you again ;D ;D ;D Hope you are well ;D ;D

Thanks very much for your information, I`m beginning to understand the area a little better now.

I had previously ordered an Alan Godfrey Map for Leicester NE 1913 number LE31.11 ( the one of two you suggested ) which showed some locations which I needed on another thread. As of this morning I`ve ordered the other map ( LE31.10 Leicester  NW 1902 ), hopefully I`ll be able to marry the two up so I can get an idea of how close the residences/ properties are to each other and perhaps give me an understanding of how relationships and families evolved :-\ :)

You have got a good memory, you must have remembered a previous post when you mention my relative who kept the public house on King Richards Road. (That was the Springthorpe`s whose son died in a plane crash if you recall, thats another piece of information you found for me ;D )

Anyway thanks again Mike for your interest and help it really is appreciated as I get so frustrated at times because I`ve visited Leicester so many times with my parents when I was younger but can`t remember the locations, scenery or landscape.

All the best Steve

Just as a rough guide to help you :~

Taking that King Richards Road as a Base ( plus you know where that is )

Mileage from King Richards Road to :~

Westbourne Road.  = 1.9. miles.
Beatrice Road. = 0.8. miles.
Abbey Park Road. =  1.6. miles.
Eaton Street.  = 1.5. miles.
Bow Street.  = 0.3. miles.

Any B road beats the A47 and the notorious Hardwick roundabout :o :o

Just a quick and probably very daft question, you mention Westbourne Road - Main Industry Boot & Shoe ( British Shoe Company occupied the most of the area ).

Don`t suppose you`ve ever heard of Bunny and Skinner? a printing firm in Wharf Street? Only I`ve just found that my Grandfather had apprenticeship papers for that firm.

Please don`t go to any great length`s to find out, its not that important, just wondering thats all.

Steve

Greeting Steve

Re Skinner Printers

I had a look at the Trade Directories yesterday at the Records Office

Seems that W.A.W. Skinner set up business in or around 1905
In Morledge Street

By 1909 he had moved to Fleet Street No 3.
Where he remained in business till 1923.

But no mention of the Bunny partner

Hiya Mike,

Many thanks for finding that information out for me ;D ;D although I hope you didn`t make a special trip to LRO on my behalf :-\ :-\

Bit of a mystery about Bunny then :-\ :-\ although interesting to learn that Skinner ceased trading in1923 the same year my Grandfather married my Grandmother. He is listed on the marriage certificate as Journeyman Printer.................I guess that starts another story.....................?

Many thanks again Mike, you`ve produced the goods again ;D

Hi Steve,

As Mike has said Bow Street has disappeared under the Narborough Road.  It also depends upon the date you are researching as the area has changed substantially twice. The last time being the Narborough Road work and the first time being the 1890's when the river was completely transformed and much of the west bank around the Bow bridge area built upon.  The current Bow Bridge dates from this work and has no connection with Richard 111 other then the name and rough location.  Bow Street probably evolved from something prior to this date but was more then likely totally transformed if it had of done.  I will look it up at work next week and send you the results.

Hi Adrian,

Many thanks for your reply and the details enclosed. ;D ;D

The period in question is the 1920s/1930`s.

I`m planning a visit to Leicester sometime after the school summer holidays. I would like to trace where some of my ancestors lived. If roads and avenues are still in existance today then thats not a problem but I get frustrated because I can`t find locations :o :o Thats why I post these requests of help in the hope someone with local knowledge will find the time to explain.

Thanks again Steve

Sorry it's taken so long but here is the map of the location of the missing Bow Bridge Street.  I have older ones but I think this is more relevant to the date you are looking at. I hope it's of some interest.

Thanks very much for the map ;D ;D I`ve printed it off and added it to my family tree details.

Just helps give an indication of where everybody lived, there is also a mention of Applegate Street, had relations there too!

Thanks again Adrian, appreciate your continued interest and help.

Hi,
Sorry it's taken a while, but at last I have the map of the location of Applegate for you.  It actually still exists but is unmarked as it formed part of a through route linking two streets.  I have put on two maps and the bit you want runs north/south linking Peacock Lane and Town Hall Street (alongside Wyggeston School.  Today it is a pedestrian path again.  The maps are 1771 and 1928.

Great maps and information Adrian ;D Thankyou so much.

The detailed reply helps me understand where some of my ancestors used to live compared to modern day. This will help when I visit sometime in the New Year. ( Besides I`ve already been tipped off that Leicester is full of road works etc at the moment ;) )

My ancestors who lived in Applegate Street in 1901 previously lived in Peacock Lane. Their son went on to have a chip shop at 34 Highcross Street in 1903.

Thanks again Adrian for you keen interest and help. Its very much appreciated.

I'm new here so not sure if it's OK to post so long after the original postings!

Gresham Street is no longer there. If you search for Dorset Street in Leicester (or look at the following link)

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Catherine+St,+Leicester+LE4,+United+Kingdom&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=12.4489,28.256836&ie=UTF8&cd=3&geocode=FWpdIwMdzwPv_w&split=0&ll=52.645225,-1.118975&spn=0.012473,0.027595&z=15

Dorset St used to run between Belgrave Rd and Catherine St, as Brandon St still does. Working south (towards the city centre) the streets were:-

Brandon St
Dorset St
Argyle St
Gresham St
Cranbourne St

dissecting them all (running parallel with Belgrave Gate) was Allington St.

Cheers

Rob

and then there was the (LNER I think) railway station and sidings...

Hi Rob,

Thank you very much for your post. I appreciate anyone taking the time to answer my questions or queries.

I live 75 miles away from Leicester and although I visited there regularly when I was very young I don`t recall any locations or addresses, thus the reasoning behind a lot of my questions.

I am in the process of uploading a 1933 street plan of Leicester. If you want to take a look at it, there is only one section at the moment, NW. It should be completed within the next couple of days. View at http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html/source/Early%20Maps.html Click on 'Leicester 1933'.

This is excellent - and so are the other maps - I only wish I had to do research in Manchester! I had a look at some of the rest of your site and I really like it - great un-bloated layout and lots of interesting things! I'm looking forward to the NE corner of the Leicester map!

Well done and thanks Eric

Eric - it works very well - appreciate the effort in getting the scan level and lined up! - 1933 is a good date as much of the Victorian street layout is still intact.

Thanks very much - I think this should be added to the Leicestershire Resources section of the site.

Gresham St is now demolished, but it was a terrace off St Catherine St, parallel to Brandon St. There is an old photo of Brandon St on the web to see what they were like.
