Dear Sue,
Thank you for your extremely helpful response to our enquiry.
We had, up until now misleading information regarding the marriage but with the Parish and Church data from you we can continue our search.
Incidentally, should you come across anyone researching Urch in Kewstoke (Somerset), with the support of the local history society, we now hold a complete record of Urch families in the Parish.
Always happy to return research favours.
Many thanks,
Keith & Sue

Hi,
If your William Casely was born in Draycott, Somerset circa 1802 and his and Sarah's children were Charles Casely born in Draycott in 1834 and Mary Ann Casely born in Wookey, Somerset in 1843 then it is more likely that the following can be of help to you.
I have carried out quite an extensive research on the Urch name.
Sarah Ann Casely nee Urch was born in Westbury, Somerset in 1809; Her parents were a Richard & Ann Urch nee Coombs or Coombes.
Richard Urch was baptised in Westbury on 29 May 1774 and Ann Coombes or Coombs in 1772. They married on 29 May 1797 in Westbury.
If you need any more info I may be able to help.

Have also researched the Urch family of Westbury extensively. Wm Caseley & Sarah Urch are on my tree. Would like to get in touch with any other descendants of Richard Urch & Ann Coombes. Thank you Sue for info on the Casely marriage at St Mary Redcliffe which I had spent ages looking for.
I now find that Sarah Urch's sister Ann married David Walter at Bedminster in 1824 and her brother Thomas married a bigamist, Eleanor Harris, at Mary Redcliffe in 1834. The other siblings all seem to have married in Westbury. Does anyone know what the Bristol connection (if any) was? Could the parents Richard & Ann Urch have lived there for a while?

For Florence Urch,
Hi,
I refer to your message of 8 July and have found that Thomas, the son of Richard & Ann Coombes was still residing with his parents in the 1841 Census. He could have married Eleanor Harris and decided to return home after finding out about his bigamist wife. Do you know for sure it was this Thomas?
I have raised a spreadsheet on Excel and have listed all possible Urch Baptisms and have been trying to integrate their marriages. It is extremely difficult to identify the right person as there are so many John's, Samuels, Thomas's, William's and Richard's. Some of them were baptised around the same time. For example, I have discovered that there was a Thomas baptised in Bristol on 10 March 1799 of parents William & Susanna Sweetman or Swetnam. This Thomas married an Emma Cundy of Philiok, Cornwall and they had a daughter named Susanna Sweetman. This was easy to figure out as her name was her Grandmother's maiden name. But they not all so easy to figure out.
If Richard & Ann Coombes son, Thomas, married this Eleanor Harris, do you know if he obtained a divorce or was the marriage annulled.

For Florence Urch
Hi again
I have gathered you are descended from another son of Richard & Ann Coombes. John Urch who was baptised on 15 September 1805 and who married a Charlotte Wall on 1 May 1827.
I can supply all of the other siblings and possibly their Ascendents & Descendents if you want.

Hi Alun,
Thanks for your reply. There is a full (and fascinating) report of the Eleanor Harris Bigamy Trial at Bodmin on http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CORNISH-GEN/2007-11/1195607943. It says Thomas Urch is of Westbury. I have extracted all the Westbury baptisms for Urch & there are only two possible Thomas' at about the right time. 'Mine' and one bapt 17.3.1816, he is only 18 in 1834, the date of the bigamous marriage, Eleanor being 33. Also I think he married a Mary Mapstone at Bridgewater reg dist in 1840. 'My' Thomas would have been 31, a much better match for age, he died in 1856 at westbury, apparently still single, in his will he leaves his property between his siblings. As far as I can tell he is the unfortunate 'husband', probably put off women for life!
The trial report says that his parents went to see Hall the main prosecution witness in Bristol. This, & the fact that Thos had some siblings who also married in Bristol made me wonder if Richard Urch & Ann (Coombs) lived there for a while? However I think it unlikely.
I am descended from Fredk, son of John Urch. Fredk emigrated to MI, USA in 1876 leaving behind only his eldest son, my Gt Grandfather, hence I am in the Westcountry not in America!
I would like any details of descendants please. I have done some work on them, especially those in the US, but a double check would be good.
Many Thanks, Florence Urch

Hi Florence,
I have recorded all Urch Baptisms / Births starting from 1540 up to 2004. Although my listings are far from completion ( I am adding to it all the time) I have about 2300 Baptisms, and as you can imagine if you know Excel, each row represents a Birth and I have incorporated their deaths or Burials; their Marriage partners; their deaths and lastly both the parents. I am in the middle of raising separate family record sheets using the worksheet programme based upon my info, so that I can verify I have the correct info. I love using Excel and have devised a Family Record Sheet myself incorporating the Census records. The Census sheets help me later on, especially those for people born after 1780 to 1800. or to be precise those still living after 1841 and after. Prior to 1780 / 1800 it becomes more difficult in recording the correct wives / husbands. I have a wealth of information to help me FreeReg / Lots of other Websites / FamilyHistoryonline / FamilySearch / Microfiche Parish records for Wells; Westbury; Kewstoke; Axbridge and Chelvey. I am awaiting the Fiche for Ashwick; Banwell and Chilton Polden to arrive from Somerset Records Office, which should arrive any day now.
Am I correct in thinking you are the Florence whose birth was registered in the 4th Qtr of 1945 in Bath. I was born in 1947 in Romford Essex. My father was born in Risca Monmouthshire in 1913 and my Ancestors came to South Wales during 1845 to 1850 from the Bedminster area. I started this Excel Spreadsheet in the hope it would help me identifying all my Ancestors which it has and I just went on from there.
It is now like a One Name Study.
The Bigamy Court Proceedings report makes wonderful reading and yes I agree with you, it has to be the Thomas of Richard & Ann Coombes. I have two other Thomas's not including the one who married the bigamist; one who married in Newington in London in 1838 and one who was married in Bridgewater in 1840. The Thomas who married Mary Ann Mapstone was in 1840 in Bridgewater as you say and the other married a Mary Ann Smith in Newington, London although this needs to be verified.
I know the Thomas who married Mary Ann Mapstone was the one in 1840 but I am having difficulty in identifying the Baptism of the Thomas who married in London.
I will do a separate note for the Ancestors / Descendants as this is getting too long.
Best Regards

Hi Alun
Many thanks for instant reply, yes you have tracked me down. By the way I presume as the marriage was bigamous it did not need to be formally dissolved. Would be happy to pass on my e mail address but dont wish to do so on this message board, is there any way round this?
Glad to know I'm not the only person with lots of lists of Urch's!
Cheers for now, Florence

Hi Florence,
Yes I had the same idea but also did not want to post my E-Mail Address. Do you belong to Genes Reunited. Their messages are private and are sent to the individual concerned. Failing that are you a subscriber to Ancestry.co.uk. I could send a personal message that way.

Hi Florence,
I hope you have found my E-Mail Address now on Bristol & Avon FHS.
IF you can send me an E-Mail then I can send back by attachment some of my Family Record Sheets detailing your side of the Urch's.
It would be better for me to do it this way.
