Hello Weardsider. I wonder if your family married into the Hedley family? Here is a stone inscription for Hunwick that may be of interest. It is weathered but some of it can be read and anyway it may give you a lead.

Also of Ann Butterfield, daughter of the above who died 1880? age 57 years?

Looks like a Hedley marrying a Butterfield?
Adam.

Hi Adam - there is no marriage with any Hedleys that I have found. What my brother and I were expecting was to find a marriage between Nichol and Butterfield or Harrison and Butterfield but this has not shown up.

Hello Adam
You've helped me before on another site so maybe you can help me on this. My mother thinks that her grandmother was burried in Satley and I notice that for St Cuthberts you do have a Davison burried there. Do you know whether this is male or female and what date he/she/they died. It might help that my gt grandfather's first name was Ralph sorry I don't know what my gt grandmother was called short of that she was a Little before she married.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Margaret
-
Hello Margaret. There are 5 gravestones at Satley.
one for 1879, 1934,194 and the rest are from the 1980 and later.
There are no stones with a Ralph Christian name.
The other names are Rhoda, Thomas, Florence, Margaret, Thompson and Ann.
Adam
-
Thanks Adam
That only makes matters worse now, as my grandmother was born 1892 so her mother was alive then, unless she died in childbirth which could be one of the reasons why her mother ended up bringing up the children. But then the dates dont tally with the ones you have which would mean that she probably isnt burried in Satley. Aaargh this family is driving me mad its like trying to find the Scarlet Pimpernel, you know they seak him here, I seak them there etc Ah well Ill have to try something else. ::)
I wonder if she was brought to Tow Law to be with the rest of her family hummm.
Thanks anyway Adam much appreciated
Margaret

Hi Adam
What do you have for Smith and Butterfield please?
Thanks
Carol
-
Hello Carol. I have already posted the Butterfield inscription on this thread.
As for the Smith gravestones on here and your other requests. Could you give me some time scale that you are looking for.
As you will understand there are lots of Smiths and it would be pointless to post everything from 1800's to the late 1900's.
Adam
-
Hello Carol. Looking back at my postings I see the I have also posted the Smith inscriptions for Satley.
Adam
-
I noticed on a post you said you were looking for a Hedley- Butterfield marriage, I don't know if you still are, or if you have found this, but there is a Sarah Butterfield marrying a John Hedley in Bishop Auckland, Durham in 1881. Sarah then died in 1885. Both are recorded as living in Durham Hunwick at the time.
As I say, I don't know how or if this fits into your tree but I hope it might help!

Adam

-
Hello Fiona. Just the one for Rutherford at Satley and it is in a very poor condition.

Hi Adam
Got your post about Nattrasses here at Satley. Have read post 11 on here - not mine unfortunately - do you have any others. And I see you have a Bartram on your list. Wasn't expecting to find any of them here......could I have details for them please? Have already investigated Stanhope when they used to be available online - but thanks
Cheers
-
Hello again. The two gravestones that I have that may be yours (Nattrass and Bartram )
are both way past the date where I post them here. Bartram gravestone would give a birth date of around the 1895 ish and the Nattrass would give a birth date in the very early 1900's.
Can give them via the personal link if you want them.
Adam
-
Please may I have details for Bowes and Bradwell MIs in Satley churchyard? Thank you; Rogerina
-
Hi Adam
I'm now very curious as to which Bartram & Nattrass you have. The Bartrams were mainly from around the Quebec & Hamsteels area. But it's such an unusual name. So yes please could I have their details. Curiosity will be the undoing of me one day! I really do appreciate all your time giving me these details
Cheers!!!
-
Hello Rogerina. The two gravestones are from the 1990's so can not post them here.
Adam
-
OK Adam. That's fine; I was interested in burials of around a hundred or more years ago so have no particular interest in modern ones. Thank you for your trouble. Rogerina
-
Hi Please could i have the mitchell stirk, and howe stirk, and telford inscrptions
Many thanks
-
Hello. Here are the inscriptions :-
To the memory of Martha Jane, the beloved daughter of Edwin and Mary Ellen Mitchell-Stirk of Satley,
who died January/11/1868 aged 1 year and 2 months.
In loving memory of John, beloved husband of Jane Howe of the Travelers Rest Inn, who died July/30/1903 aged 86 years.
Also the above Jane Howe, who died March/11/1919? aged 68? years..
There are no gravestones with Howe/Stirk.
There is one for Telford but it is way past the 1950's cut off date that I use for posting on the board.
The death of the person would have given her the birth date of 1925.
You can have it by personal mail if so required.
Adam
-
Many thanks Adam for all your hard work.
My Mistake on the Howe Stirk burial.
-
Hi Adam
noticed that you have a list of MIs for Satley and Lowes appears on list.
Is this Jacob Lowes of Steely Farm who died in May 1902 and if so could you let me have the MI please ?
Many thanks
-
Hello Phil20.No gravestone for Jacob Lowes. Just a Stone for a Gertrude Helen Stewart daughter of Hobson and Margaret Lowes of Low Mill Farm, Cornsay who died 1897? aged 2 years.
Adam
-
Thanks for your swift feedback Adam
wonder where Jacob was buried ?
My knowledge of the local area pretty thin, but I think the family had 'migrated' north and east from Stanhope parish (where Jacob's gt grandfather Nicholas buried 1767,grandfather Nicholas buried in 1818 and father Nicholas in 1857 ?) towards Hedleyhope, Tow Law etc
Are there any published MIs for Stanhope ?
Regards
-
Hello again. Yes I have the inscriptions for Stanhope as well as the rest of the Dale. I had already checked for gravestones on all of them but there are no recordings of Lowe(s) left standing and readable.
Adam
-
Thanks for looking Adam
I did manage to find one for Nicholas (1753-1818) at Stanhope on this website but not for earlier/ later generation
http://www.killhope.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/CemeteryInscriptions.pdf
You may find it useful

Hi Adam
I am interested in any inscriptions for Storey or Heads in Satley/Lanchester. Thanks in advance.
Pipistrelle
-
Sorry it's taken so long to reply(due to work commitments), thanks very much Adam.I'm not sure if they're mine, will have to do more digging !!!!
-
Hello. Here is the inscription for Storey at Satley.
In memory of John Storey of Cowsley?, who died July/26/1875 aged 60 years.
Also Barbara, wife of the above, who died ????? 6th/1890? ages 74 years.
The above stone is in poor condition , hence the ?????
I do not do cross postings because I think it causes confusion so only inscriptions for Satley will be posted on this thread.
By the way there are no inscriptions for Heads. On post 1 it shows all the surnames for that particular graveyard.
I can tell you that I have already posted the Storey inscription on post 77 on the Lanchester thread.
I think it is a good idea to read all the posts because you may get a link to names that you your researching.
Adam
-
Adam
The Satley Storeys are definitely some of my family. I have looked at the Lanchester thread too.
I only found this site yesterday, so am rather unfamiliiar with procedures.
Thanks for the info.

Thank you Adam, unfortunately I was looking in particular for a Thomas Dowson who was buried according to the NBI at Lynsack & Sately in October 1866 and his wife Ruth Dowson buried Lynsack St John in July 1865. As I said I had a look at your other postings for the surrounding area but had no luck. There are lots of MIs for Dowsons around that area so will recheck to see if I've missed any. In the meantime thank you very much for your help.
