Title: Arbroath Year Book & East Forfarshire Directory Lookup Offer
Post by: DennyDescendant on Thursday 29 May 08 17:09 BST (UK)
I have (for the moment anyway) the Arbroath yearbooks for the years 1890 1894 1895 1900 1901 1902 1904 1912 1927 1928 1929 1938 1939 1940 1948 1950 1951 1955.

These contain a list of householders for Arbroath, Carnoustie and Friockheim.
As well as info on aspects of the villages of Arbirlot, Auchmithie, Barry, Carmylle, Colliston, Guthrie, Inverkeilor, Kinnell, Kirkden, Lunan, Panbride and St Vigeans.

So if anybody wants someone or some place looked up let me know and I'll get back to you.

Derek.

Hello Margaret,

I've had a look and couldn't find any reference to them in the 1927 or '28 directories, although the info is less detailed for the outlaying towns compared with Arbroath.

Sorry I couldn't help more,
Derek.

Hello Derek,

Re:  Colliston

I would be grateful for any information you may find on

William Johnston, b. 1857, d. 1925, and his wife Elizabeth Ramsay Dorward, b. 1861, d. 1914.

William was coachman, assistant factor and possibly factor and they raised a large family at Colliston Castle.  They were there from 1898.

Kathleen

Okey dokey,

First Kathleen. Sorry nothing on Colliston to report.

Andy67, sorry.

Forfarian, There's a couple of people listed as grocers in 1889 in Ethie Haven. A "Miss Finlay" and "Thomas Cargill".

Sorry I couldn't furnish any of you with more, but the books really are Arbroath centered.

Derek.

Hello Derek,

I'm not sure if by 'yearbook' you mean a school year book or an address book.

My grandmother, Isabella Michie, was born in Arbroath in 1896 and lived there with her parents and some of her siblings till they moved to Dundee.  I think they lived at 60 Logie Street.  Her parents were Isabella & George Michie, and her siblings were Mary Ann, Walter, Jemima, Henry (Harry), Margaret (Maggie), Joseph, George and James.

Do you see a listing for any of them? Thanks, Susan

Thanks,

Post by: DennyDescendant on Monday 22 September 08 05:43 BST (UK)
My apologies to all for the late reply.

The directories contain business listings, information on committee members of all the clubs and associations within the area. Also included are lists of male and female householders (although in the earlier books they only include the voters roll), they vary from year to year sometimes including phone numbers. All the fishing boats are listed with the name (and sometimes address) of the owner. There are farmer lists too for the area around Arbroath.

The years I have are scattered between 1890 and 1955.

Liverpool Lass What years is your friend looking for Stormonts in? There are quite a lot of people called that in Arbroath.

adee7 Heaps of Dorwards, any specific names, trades or years?

SusanMacG In 1895 a George Michie described as a machine-overseer lived at 27 Leonard Street. But he does not appear in 1900. So that could well be him!
In 1890 a John Michie was a billposter at 18 Church Street but in 1895 & 1900 there was a James M.B. Michie on the voters roll who lived at 18 Church Street and was a Billposter.

SweetSue a quick search on scotlands people tells me that James Rae and Ann McIvor were married in Arbroath in 1897.

In 1900 there were three James Rae's on the voters roll. One a carter living at 21 Bank Street, another a slater (James H.) at 27 Sidney Street and the other a labourer at 25 Elliot Street.
Also in 1900 there was an Ann Rae living at 94 Keptie Street.
There's a few McIvor's/McIver's too.

The Carrie's in Arbroath are numerous, can you narrow down your request?

Cheers,
Derek.

James Rae had an uncle named James born about 1838. Ann McIver had 6 siblings: William, Thomas, Duncan, John, Charles and Helen. The only one I could find anything on is Thomas who was married to a Margaret and 4 children that I know of. Margaret Whyte Rae married George Carrie and had 10 children: Isabella, George, Charles, Jane , John, Mary, Joseph and David. I know that's a lot of names but any of the names would help. I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi Denny,

Interesting about George Michie.  It's possible that it 'might' be my great grandfather.  I found him listed in the profession of 'railway surfacer'.  He was born in 1866, and was listed (maybe in the 1901 census) as living at 30 Logie Street, Angus, Arbroath, Arb, Scotland.  His wife was Isabella D. Lawrence (Michie), who was born in 1868. Maybe they lived at 27 Leonard Street before moving to Logie Street??  I believe they moved to Dundee at some point.

Susan I'm fairly sure there has never been a Logie Street in Arbroath. I think that's a Dundee address. You may wish to check that again?

ED2005 Here's all the John Edwards Blacksmith info I could find.

In 1890 John Edwards a Blacksmith lived at 28 Lillies Wynd, this was at the northern end of the town.

In 1890, 1894 & 1895 there was a Blacksmith called John Edwards at Seaton, which is an agricultural area on the northern side of Arbroath, the opposite of Arbirlot on the southern.

Dear Derek,
I wonder if you can help me find a relative that was resident at 42 Wilkes Lane, Dundee in 1926 to 1929. Her name was Sarah Donnelly, born 1904 in Glasgow to a Hugh Donnelly and Sarah Donnelly. The last thing i have traced her to is on her mothers death certificate (the mother Sarah lived and died in Glasgow) giving 42 Wilkies Lane as her address, which is strange because it is a church (st Josephs). I thought perhaps she may be listed in the yearbook you mention. Any information or suggestions i would be very grateful.

Denny,

Yes, you're absolutely right.....I looked it up, and it is in Dundee.  I found out that my Michie great grandparents lived in Arbroath, and alot of the children were born there, but they moved to Dundee, so this makes sense.  Thanks for getting back to me.

Exciting new.....I've talked with my father's cousin, his mother's brother's daughter, who is a year younger than my father....83 yrs old.  She's lovely, and funny too, and is so excited that we're in touch.  Her daughter is also interested in Ancestry research, so is very happy that I found them.

I have just found my father's cousin (my grandmother's neice) who is 83 years old and living in Dundee, where she lived as a little girl.  I will write her and ask if she knows of a 42 Wilkies Lane if you like.  She was born in 1925, but her parents were born in 1894.   I found all my information thru British Ancestry.

Dear Susan,
Thank you very much, any help will be very welcome as i have come up against a brick wall at the moment. 42 Wilkes Lane is st Josephs Church and Sarah Donnelly (my relative) lived there in 1926-1929 with a Catherine Murphy and a Mary Hickey. There was also 4 priests living there also so the women were either housekeepers or trainee teachers at a guess. I have written to the church to see if they have any record of her, but have had no reply.

Hello Derek,

My great grandmother's (Isabella Stewert Bell) family lived at 45 Rossie Street in Arbroath. The birth date I have for her is 1863. Her husband, James Craik died in 1891, and I have a picture of a memorial to him in (I believe) Arbroath.  I don't have her death date though. Does your source have any reference to her death, or perhaps James Craik's death and the cause (he was 31)?

Maybe worth mentioning again but deceasedonline.co.uk gives a lot of burial information for the Arbroath area. Angus is (I think) the only Scottish county represented. I used it a while back and found it to be very good.

Derek doesn't seem to have been replying to more recent requests - and he did say originally that he had the records "for a while".

It might be better to post a general question on the Fife board (if that's the relevant location) and see if anyone can answer.

Welcome to Rootschat, by the way!

Apologies to all. I've been away from the genealogy for a bit, but now I'm back.

There are many Christie's  listed in the Arbroath voters roll for 1891.
However there is one Sam Christie listed who is described as a flaxdresser residing at 20 St Mary Street.

There are these Crammond's:

James, a mason, 16 church st.
David, fireman, 21 guthrie port.
P. , shoemaker, 56 brechin rd.
William, foreman, 13 st vigeans rd.
David, fireman, 16 east abbey st.
David, seaman, 8 leonard st.
Hugh, mill foreman, 21 sydney street.

IanCraik

Unfortunately there's only one Craik on the Arbroath voter roll in 1891, David, a salesman living at 15 george st.

I think the site you're after is www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk (http://www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk) where you can view BMD's for Scotland. You'll get his cause of death there.

I have already (I think) sent a message regarding my interest in an address in Viewfield Road, Arbroath, in the 1890s, but I should perhaps have added that I am interested in the names Wyse, and Lothian, in Arbroath at that period.  That might help track down the address in question - or it might not.. there are a lot of unknowns in this enquiry.

Hope I have sent this correctly.

Thanks

I have some Carries in my tree. A distant cousin of mine, Anne Brymer or Bremner, born in Brechin in 1824, married James Carrie, born in Arbirlot in 1820 to Peter Carrie and Ann Gowans. I have traced quite a few descendants of James Carrie and Anne Brymer.

Hi

I am researching my family tree and wondered if you would possibly help me with any information pertaining to James Tindal Morgan. I believe he was a licensed grocer in Arbroath. He died in 1929 aged 75 in Marywell and I believe he buried at St. Vigeans. His wife's maiden name was Annie Watson and I believe it may have been her family's money that helped Jame set up his business or he may have taken over from her father?

Any information at all would be most helpful.

Kindest regards

Greetings Derek,

A very belated thank you for the information you provided In June of last year. It may have gone to spam because I do not recall ever seeing it until today.

I also will be checking out the link for the Black Watch Division and WWI, you provided in another post.

My ggf, Samuel Christie, was reportedly a member of that division however not for Great War but the Boar War. He fought in the US Air Corp in 1917.

Re: his Boar War service, it is noted that he was an honorary mayor of Arbroath. Is that something soldiers who served in that action received. Somewhat akin to receiving a key to the city in the USA. Do you have any knowledge of this title for post war soldiers?

Thanks Again,

Hi,

He was granted the title honorary Burgess, which is akin to being given the freedom of a town or city. It was a title awarded to all returned veterans of the Boer War from Arbroath.

Re: his Boar War service, it is noted that he was an honorary mayor of Arbroath.

Just for the sake of clarity, the office of mayor does not exist in Scotland. The civic head is the Provost, or Lord Provost in the case of certain cities.

And to add to potential confusion, in England a provost is an ecclesiastical dignitary, or an officer at an Oxbridge college whose duties include keeping the students in order.

Derek.

An very old thread I know, but just in case the original poster is still monitoring:

The two John's were first cousins.  Many of the Edward/Edwards family were blacksmiths, and they frequently recycled males forenames including John, James, David and Norman.

The John Edwards living at Lillies Wynd was the one who married Agnes Grieve.

Here is the 1881 census record of John Edwards at that address: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1881Scotland&indiv=try&h=3538901

Here is a family tree showing that the John Edwards who was the son of Agnes Talbot nee Edwards (as per the census) married Agnes Grieve: http://www.granitecityroots.co.uk/Edwards/edwardspage2.html

The John Edwards at Seaton married Agnes Stewart Milne.  He was the son of James Edwards, another blacksmith.

James Edwards and Agnes Talbot nee Edwards were siblings, the children of John Edward and his wife Magdalene Watt.

Hi
I wonder if you could look up a business for me ? Its J S Smith & Sons ironmongers 124 High Street Arbroath. I know it was still trading in 1925 when the last Smith son Adam died and I know it was sold and continued to trade under the same name. I was hoping to be able to find out how much longer the business traded for if that's possible.
Thanks for your time.
