My great grandfather, EDWARD THOMAS OWLEY told his family in Australia that he was from Dublin- however when I searched the Irish Ancestors site around this period - it appears that the only Owleys in Ireland around 1853 in the Parish records were in Wexford - 2 families in Kilmakilloge and 1 family in Kilcavan. On his death record in 1899 he said that his parents were named Edward Owley and Bridget O'Conner or possibly O'Connor. He was listed as being 48 at his death - so would guess he was born in 1851 or 1852. I have no idea if he was literate or not - so am unsure if Owley was an approximation made by someone recording details who was unfamiliar with Irish accents. My grandmother told me that he had a strong Irish accent.
I have no information as to his arrival date in Australia - the earliest record being that of the birth of his daughter in Melbourne - Victoria - Australia in 1889
Any information or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Debbie

Thanks for that Lep - is there any way of knowing whether they owned the land - or whether they rented it. I have searched for the info - and have been told that the information is differentiated - but when I find it - it is not specified.

The actual printed books of Griffith's Valuations have columns for the following:
No. and Letter of Reference to Map
Townlands and Occupier
Immediate Lessor
Description of Tenement (this is where you get house, offices,m land, etc.)
Area (in acres, rods, perches)
Rateable Annual Valuation (this is broken down into 2 sub-columns: Land, Buildings)
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property.

Put 'Owley' into surname box and select Wexford for county and 4 entries are listed. From there you can look at images.

Hello De.Aghadowey has given you a good site which may help you understand.
In the eightteenth and nineteenth centuries the vast majority of the Irish population lived as small tenant-farmers on large estates owned for the most part by English and Anglo-Irish Landlords.
