Is there anyone out there with the family name Stamp. I am trying to find anything about the name as my Grandfather was Mr Ernest Stamp who was an artist from Yorkshire. ::)
-
Hello there Mirabelli
Welcome to Rootschat.
When was your grandad born-and do you know who his parents were?
Rootschat is only for tracing ancestors so be careful about putting any names or dates of people who may still be alive though.
You will find us a very helpful bunch of nutters people ;D
So any questions you want to ask ,feel free, cos we've all been at the begining of our search at one time or another.
All the best

Mirabelli, welcome. Carol8353 has suggested a useful point to start. You could also look at the Surname Interests link (at the bottom of each page) to find any RootsChatters with links to the name.
Best wishes

Could someone on Rootschat have a grandfather born THAT long ago?
He might be the right person of course, but it does seem an awfully long time back.

Could someone on Rootschat have a grandfather born THAT long ago?
Yes, himself's grandfather was born in 1870. And both of us have quite a few years in front of us before we pick up our bus pass. ;D

-
Liz there ia an Ernest Stamp b. Yorks, Sowerby Bridge in 1901 also not the same one as you found earlier :-\
here: RG13; 3691; 127; 29.
Marriages Jun 1896 Strand 1b 1161
Adamson Frank Hindson
Soden Lydia
Stamp Ernest
Toye Alice Marie

heres the Sowerby Bridge one in 1881 -
RG11 3909 79 3
Ashton Rd Openshaw Lancashire
Edward Stamp 56 Boot n Shoe maker bn Northants
Charlotte 53 bn Bucks
Emil? ? ? ? 19 bn Bucks
Adering? ? ? 15 bn Bucks
Earnest 12 bn Yorks Sowerby Bridge
John Hurst Boarder
but maybe this family is not him....
I only saw one yorkshire birth I thought... but which one is that?
-
Here is the other one in 1901
It isnt the same family that I have been follwing in 1871/1881 as ages occupations are way out etc
But places of birth follow the same areas that the other family went to - so not really sure
1901
RG13 3691 127 29
Edward Stamp 48 Iron Turner bn Wolverton Bucks
Elizabeth wife 46bn Yorkshire Norland
Ernest 25 Electrical draughtsman bn Sowerby Bridge
Louisa 20 dtr bn Openshaw Lancs
-
Now here is THAT family in 1891 - Ernest seems to be JAmes and so does dad, Edward
1891
RG12 3180 24 42
James E Stamp 36 Mechanical Turner bn Wolverton Bucks
Elizabeth 36 bn Yorkshire Sowerby Br
James E 13 bn Sowerby Br
Louisa 10 bn Manchester
but is this family the same one as the one I had before with the Dad born in Northants, the wife called Charlotte etc? AND the dad was age 46 in 1871! so cant be 36 in 1891....
I think this is the son - Ernest's elder bro who was called James Ed on the 1871 census
so this son in 1891 called James E is then called Ernest in 1901, and is a different Ernest to the one we had before (actually his nephew)
who ... I think ..... that the Ernest I have followed, son of Edward and Charlotte (little bro of this JAmes Ed) .. could ... possibly ... be the right guy...
but I am so confused that I dont like to be too confident.
-
Just to clinch it - here is the birth of the 'other' Ernest who comes up with the Sowerby Br birthplace
Jan/Feb/Mar 1878
James Ernest Stamp
Halifax reg distr ref 91 513
- son of James Edward (known sometimes as Edward) and Elizabeth nee Wilde (marriage on FreeBMD 1876 Halifax reg distr)
- grandson of Edward and Charlotte
- nephew to 'our' Ernest Stamp who was born 1869 in Sowerby Bridge and goes on to marry Lydia Soden
sorted?
-
so the only def census entry we have for 'our' Ernest is the 1901 ?
and his marriage to Lydia and also his birth
-
No ... well ..I thought I had concluded that the Ernest son of Edward and Charlotte that I had got in 1871 and 1881 ARE 'our' Ernest!! (Havnet got him in 1891, have I)
Have I missed something? ;) I usually do!
-
GOT HIM IN 1891
AND this clinches it!!
Indexed under 'Damp' >:(
RG12 3179 55 2
Ashton OLd Road Openshaw
Edward 67 Boot dealer bn Northants
Charlotte 64 bn Bucks
Aderaina 24
Ernest 22 Artist bn Sowerby Bridge
Now the fact that he is now an artist clinches it.
So the 1881 and 1871 censuses I found for this family are him too.

Yeah I was thinking that too Liz ;D ;D ;D
Maybe she just wanted to know if anyone on Rootschat was looking for the same family.
Lets hope she comes back online soon and puts us out of our misery.
Well done by the way.

Just come across your query about Ernest Stamp.
Ernest`s sister Harriet married John Robinson and their daughter Edith was my wife's Grandmother. I have traced the stamp line only back to Edward, Ernest`s father, so assuming you still need information about Ernest`s brothers and sisters and cousins you will find it all on the Ancestry.co.uk web site on the Brett family tree
