I hope I'm not offending anyone by intruding here . I have a problem , My G/Grandpa William Adamson , book-keeper ,41 was an inmate in Kirkdale Gaol in 1881 & I would dearly like to locate information as to his offence etc. He does not appear to be in Liverpool Records Files & I have hit a brick-wall & would appreciate any suggestions to proceed further . Ron Hamilton , N.Z.

Hi Ron i cannot see anything about him pre 1881 in the Liverpool Mercury Newspaper.. was he from Liverpool and what was his last address prior to 1881..

Hi Colette , Thank you for your efforts. In 1871 He & Wife Annie were in Hamilton Rd , Everton. In !881 Annie & family were in 57 St Albans, Anfield, minus William, who was booked in to Kirkdale Gaol, aged 41, book-keeper, married, born Staithes ,Yorks . He was home with the family at 57 St Albans in 1891 . I suspect he might have been 'fiddling the books ', but I'd love to get some detail . Ron

Hi Collette,
Just a warning - I have been trying for 24 hours to get onto the Gale site with no luck, perhaps they are having problems. I keep getting a message telling me my user name and password are incorrect. I believe others are having the same problem.
It is irritating as I also have a crim. I want to check out - he died in February 1887 in HM Prison Liverpool and I think there may be reference to him in the Liverpool Mercury.

My family has had 2 offenders one from Kirkby and one from Wigan. I think Elijah Prescott may have embezzled but Elias was a boatman so problem some crime to do with drunkedness as boatmen were notrious drinkers. I'd like to know. I think there may yet be another in York Gaol. Where would you get such records? Do they have these records in the local archives?

Hi there what time frame are we talking about for Elijah Prescott * Elias ???? was he a Prescott too..

Elijah from Wigan was in Kirkdale Gaol in 1871. Judging by his childrens age he must have been there between 1865 and 1872. Sorry got wrong name for second He was Ezikiel. Was in Jail in 1841, died 1851 before census. Was only 38 when he died.

Hi everybody. Found my family skeletons in the cupboard made the cupboard a bit crowded. Apart from one in jail for several years for serious assault, found his son some 20 years later in jail for 9 months for assault and my great grandmothers brother sentenced after attempting to mug someone. I know my father always said that he was regarded with fear and trepidation because they had never had someone in the Grammar School from his area. It was known as an area of immorality. Hadn't thought of my family being involved though. Makes me think of later generations with great respect knowing where they originated from and how they became educated and respected members of society. My father became a clergyman and was the first in his family to go to Grammar School and also get a degree.
