Hello Everyone,
Just thought I would start this thread now to see who is interested in attending another meet in Ontario.
August seemed to be a good time.
Last time we met at Kelsey's by the Airport in Toronto.
Does anyone have another venue in mind?
Suggestions most welcome!!
Karen
-
Karen,
I'd love to join you if it can be near Ottawa or Kingston, Gananoque would be great.
Kath
-
Hi Kath,
I was thinking the Toronto area as that seems to be the most convenient for people coming from the North, East and West.
Karen
-
Karen,
That's fine. I am actually in central NY, so Ottawa or Kingston is more feasable for me, but I am sure there are more people able to make it to Toronto. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Toronto would be too much of a trip for me this summer, as we have several trips planned for the summer already, but I certainly won't rule it out for the future. I hope it works out.
Kath
-
Great idea, Karen!
Something on the subway line would be ideal for me, if possible.
Regards,
Josephine
-
Hi Karen,
Gr8 idea, I should be in that area during my vacation and family reunion in S. Ont. during August. Since I'm situated in N. Ont, any where in T.O area is fine with me.
JDC
-
thanks to whomever sent me a PM about this.
I live in Toronto so anywhere on the subway would be fine with me. Thanks.
-
Hi Karen.
I missed the last one so would very much like to go this time.
I live East of Toronto and would prefer S. Ontario.
The last two/three weeks in June are out for me.
Regards, Rob
-
I can't drive, so would have to be easily accessible by public transit, if in Toronto.
Chinatown? Either Spadina or Steeles/Kennedy (Scarborough). They have nice big round tables.
-
Gosh, I'd love to do this! Count me IN! I have never been to any sort of genealogical gathering, I'd just love to:)

LOL, you should come over, we need crew at the track ;D and if you're really bored some of the trucks need a LOF if you fancy ;)

I missed the last one and don't want to miss this one. As I am in Niagara, T.O. would be great for me, although, the majority should rule. Please keep me in the loop!

Hi everyone
Karen, if you ever hold one in Yorkdale, I could make that much more easily than the Airport or other spots. I'm about 2 1/2 hours north and getting to Yorkdale is not too complicated for me.
-
Hi All,
If memory serves, last year meeting was held at the Kelsey's on T.O. near Steels and can't remember crossroad. This was a nice place... but if another place is better for everyone then lets go for it ??? I will be coming down from northern northwestern Ontario, so which end of T.O doesn't matter to me :) Keep me posted too.
JDC
-
Yorkdale is kindof in the middle of Toronto, I think ::) and on the subway line, so that might be a good spot and easy access to the 401.
How about a date: August 17th ok??? That's a Sunday
Karen
-
Hi Karen and All,
count me in, would prefer Toronto area.
Last year's meet was a lot of fun, it's great to make personal contact and natter about our dead 'uns ;D
Genie :)
-
A wonderful idea, but I won't be able to travel there
even though I'd love to meet all of you and share ideas
and information.
Regards,
Kathleen
-
ooo 8) Looking forward to visiting your place, mid July. Does Kiddo know about the meet?
Lesanne.
-
Hi Lesanne,
I sent her a pm, so she should now, Kiddo came last year.
Where are you coming too??
Karen
-
I'm visiting Kiddo. we're cousins.
-

Karen
Yorkdale is basically where 400 and 401 meet, so it's really easy to get to from almost anywhere ,and as you said it is on the subway line. I have to check the date, I have a wedding in Kingston in August but I am not sure when!
-
HI KarenM,
I sent an email to Kiddo to tell about mtg. Kiddo will feel very wanted :-)
JDC
-
Hope I'm not working. I'd love to go. Anywhere in Toronto is good for me.
Janice
-
Hello Kiddies!!...I have been incognito for a week, thanks for the pm Karen!I finally checked my email..
Lesanne and our other cousin Betty will be here visiting and we will be travelling north on Tuesday the 22ndof July. We will be coming from Burlington and going up to the 400 north. Anyone interested to join us for lunch en route?? I think I can arrange to make the August date too. Love to see everybody.. ;D ;D
Kiddo
-
Hey Kiddo,
Ooh, where are you going on the 400? I'm at 400 & 89 cutoff, Cookstown Outlet Mall is right there ;D
Karen
-
Wow....thanks for the PM.....August 17th is ok for me and Yorkdale would be great for a lot of people like me who don't drive or don't own a car ;D...plus it's easy to reach via the highway or by GO bus.
Mary Ann
p.s. I have a wedding on August 16th ;D...my youngest son is getting married......I'm going to have a daughter-in-law to add to the tree....... ;D
-
Karen we are driving right by you..is there something resembling a restaurant at the mall?? or nearby?? or Barrie..its not too far.. Are you flexible for the 2days??
Kiddo
-
Yorkdale Mall would be good for me, too.
Regards,
Josephine
-
Well i won't be able to join you lovely people but hope you have a fantastic time ;D
Kaz
-
I'm not sure about the date. Yorkdale is not great but could be done, as it's on the subway.
-
An extra bonus for me is that Yorkdale Mall's food court sells New York Fries, which are gluten-free. I can't eat anything else in a mall or restaurant.
Regards,
Josephine
-
hi
understand this is happening and very interested in joining in.
yorkdale is great for me and aug 17 is also fine.
look fwd to seeing you Karen.
willys son

-
HI Folks,
Yorkdale is fine with me as well. Please forgive my ignorance of Yorkdale but I find most malls have very few "regular" restaurants in them and focus on the food court quick food model and I assume Yordale uses that model. I suggest that we meet in a regular restaurant (ie Kelsey's, Boston, etc) that is either in the mall or close by. Also when the time gets closer, I'd appreciate some directions on how to get there. 17 or 24th of August is good for me. Looking forward to meeting everyone there.
JDC
-
Yorkdale Mall has two restaurants that I know of: The Pickle Barrel and The Rainforest Cafe. I could double-check that, if anyone would like me to peek at the phone book and make a call. I think the Chapters bookstore had a little cafe the last time I was there. (I don't go to the mall very often.)
Regards,
Josephine
-
I googled and it has a few other places to eat...
Casey's Grill & Bar
Milestone's Grill & Bar
Moxies Classic Grill
Picklebarrel
Rainforest Cafe
Tim Horton's
mab
http://www.yorkdale.com/storedir.asp
-
Good stuff, mab!
The Timmy's is small and, in my limited experience, it's often too crowded to get a seat. I wouldn't count on being able to find a spot in there.
The Rainforest Cafe is noisy.
Regards,
Josephine
-
I haven't been to Yorkdale in years......but I agree with you about the Rainforest Cafe .........specially on a Sunday......... ;D

Ontario Rootschats meeting confirmed with the date yet? If you booked August 17th it would be hard for me to accept that because my daughter who will expect her first baby at that time, and she wanted me in her delivery room at the hospital but if the baby come early before August 17th then I will come down but her baby due was supposed on August 17th but doctor said it might be on August 25th. Who knows. Wait and see, Have you confirmed where and when for the meeting?
I would love get together near Square One in Mississauga??? Any ideas? Please let me know thanks
Maggie64
-
Hi Karen,
Thanks for keeping me in the loop about the Ontario Roots Chat Meeting. Really enjoyed last year and getting to put a face to a name. Unfortunately Aug 17 is already booked in my calendar.
If this is going to be an annual event, hopefully I'll be able to make the next one.
Cheers,
Mavis
-
Just popping in to keep this topic in focus and to say that willys son and me are waiting to hear when and where ;D
Have car, will travel (within southern Ontario) and we don't care what the grub's like, if it's not good we won't eat it :D :D :D
I'm looking forward to another great meet and willys son would like to meet his distant cousin.
Genie ;) ;D
-
I'm with you Genie...we need to keep this post alive...... :D I don't drive so Yorkdale was a good place for me but if you decide on a different place then I'll have to bring the OH.....he's from Liverpool and very entertaining :P ::) ::) ::) ::)..... ;D
mab
-
This sounds so good, could you save a "proxy" chair please? Too far across the pond for me in person..
Have a great meet everybody.
Wendy M.
-
Yorkdale was one of the places I suggested last year because I don't drive and have to rely on the TTC.
It sounds like a number of us can make it to Yorkdale.
Regards,
Josephine
-
There are a couple who don't drive so Yorkdale sounds best and it's right off the 401 for those that do.
Soooo......
Now a venue there? I agree about Rainforest, too loud (must be getting old ::))
Milestone's or Casey's??
And a date.....
Is August 17th good?
Karen
-
I've put a poll on for a date.
Karen
-
Hi everyone,
Casey's on Aug 17th has my vote.
JDC
-
Either day ...either place is fine with me ;D
mab
-
Hi
Looking fwd fwd to this happening.
Either day will work but Aug 24 is by far the preferred.
Take care
Willys son, :D ;) :D ;)
Roger
-
Either day is open for me.
I can't eat at either restaurant (Celiac), so all I care about is the coffee. ;D
How will we know each other? Will we wear silly hats?
Regards,
Josephine
-
Hi Josephine,
You can be the one wearing the funny hat, I'll be the fuddy duddy looking one in the crowd. lolol
In seriousness, last year a table was booked and the waitress took us where the other RCers were. Quite good that way. That can be done again this year, so no need to be concerned :-)
Looking forward to meeting you and the others. Take care til then.
JDC
-
I've put my vote in for the 24th as the prefered date as some people I know can't make it on the 17th.
Yorkdale is good.
Looking forward to seeing old acquaintances and meeting new ones.
Genie :)
-
well- i missed last year because of a festival at work - and that festival is being held on the 17th again this year - so i voted for the 24th - becuase we are on a short holiday in muskoka from aug 20 - 24 - so I could come by on the way back......
Tom
-
Actually the 24th would be better for me as my son is getting married on the 16th so who knows how I'll feel on the 17th......and no Genie I will not be hung over ;D......however I may be a bit tired :P
mab
-
Figured you'd like a few hours Mab. If only to dry the eyes ;D
Genie
-
Already planning the kleenex box.....it has to be pink with roses to match the decor..... ;D
mab
-
HI folks,
Actualy either the 27th or 24th is good for me, Just need some forewarning beacuase I'm not sure of the internet access I'll have after I get off from the north .
JDC
-
Sorry...meant the 17th or 24th.
JDC

Hi Here is Maggie64
Yorkdale is the place where we meet so I wonder if I get off from Yorkdale subway do I have to take the bus or walk long way to the restaurant? or it is there outside the subway station?
I don't know yet if I am making that trip because of my daughter's baby will be born on August 25th I cant promise you if I make or not. As you know that she wants me in her room when the baby is born. If baby is born earlier then I will be there. Wait and see. Anybody of you know how to sign language? because I am deaf.. (American or British signs I was at deaf school in Dundee then left for new life in Canada when I was wee lassie, so I know both sign languages but I am more expert with American signs) If nobody know how to sign.. then I will ask my good friend to come with me to join you for the chats at restaurant.
any questions just feel free to ask me . thanks Maggie
-
HI Maggie,
I'm not sure what happens once you get off the subway, but I'm sure someone from Toronto who travels the subway will be able to help you.
I only know the alphabet, please & thank you and the birthday song in ASL, but please feel free to bring your friend with you if you'd like.
Karen
-
Hellooo kids!!
Looks like this thread has a life of its own!! I think I can make either date work. I'll be either coming from or going to Muskoka too! I have not conferred with the powers that be but I'll assume that I am the powers that be and do it anyway??!!
will be nice to meet a few more of us.
Kiddo ;D

Hi, Maggie:
I'm not very good at directions, but here goes.
The restaurant will be inside the mall.
When you get off the subway at Yorkdale, there will be one exit from the platform. You will go down the stairs or escalator and then you will go through the turnstiles.
After the turnstiles, there is a set of doors. Do not go outside. Turn left; this will take you through an enclosed walkway (up some stairs, down some other stairs) and through a set of doors into the mall.
You will walk straight along the corridor for a little bit (some little stores, a CIBC bank machine and a Tim Horton's on the left, windows on the right) until it opens up into the bigger mall area.
The mall was renovated in recent years and is quite large. You will have to find a "You Are Here" map/directory and locate the restaurant on it and then make your way through the mall. There are "Information" booths scattered about in case you get lost. Store clerks should also be able to point you in the right direction. (As you might guess, I get lost very easily.)
I hope you can make it. Of course, your daughter and grandchild are your top priority. I hope the birth goes smoothly for her!
Please feel free to bring your friend to help translate and to join in the fun: the more the merrier!
Regards,
Josephine

I can get to Yorkdale on the TTC no problem, and so far both dates are fine for me.
But which restaurant will we be meeting at?
Thanks,
BD
-
Which date is confirmed? August 17th or 24th? and which restaurant? What time?
Let hope that I can make that trip. Wait and see.
Talk u soon,
Cherrio Maggie64
-
It's July now.
We should be making firm plans for this meet - date, place, time etc.
So far the majority date seems to be August 24th.
-
I was thinking someone should call and see what place would be able to accomodate a large group, either Casey's or Milestone's at Yorkdale Mall
Time, 1 o'clock or so? :-\
K
-
Good idea Karen...so I'm looking at the survey and there are 10 people who have responded ...8 of which want August 24th. Anyone out there that does want to go please respond to the survey so we have at least some idea of a head count. Then I have no problem with calling both places to see what they have available. It would be cool to have a room or separate space so we can all yak at the same time and not bother other diners ;D
mab
-
Hi KarenM and MAB,
Excellent idea. Good idea MAB to check out what's available and perhaps the lead time needed to book for each place. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. If someone would please provide directions once nailed down, I'd appreciate it - not familar with T. O too much any more. Thx in advance.
JDC
-
OK .... so I've voted for Aug 24th and I'm attending.
Hands up everyone, lets have a headcount ;D ;D ;D
Genie
-
Seriously...despite the voting thingy..I need a head count....Please let me know who will be attending so I can book a place for us.
mab... ;D
-
Seriously, count me in.
-
;D
mab
-
HI Mab,
I think I counted about 16 people who said they may be able to come.
If you could call and check it out that would be great.
Karen
-
The 24th is great for me - not sure if my partner will be with me or just drop me off n the way back from the cottage
Tom
-
HI folks...24th is good for me as well.
JDC
-
Not sure if i can make it on the 24th, August is a busy month for me, but i will try.
ms_j_a

I called both Milestones and Caseys. Milestones said they had an area were they could put about 20 people. Casey's is more open concept but they said they could put tables together for us. So..... ???
I've never eaten at either of these restaurants so I can't recommend one over the other. They both seems to have variety as far as food goes.

Hi everyone
Here is Maggie please hold 4 seats for us, Of course I will wait and see how my daughter Laura is doing with her baby that her due is on August 25th. Can't promise you if I can be there or too busy with her in the hospital who knows.... but just hold 4 seats just in case ok. Confirm what time and which restaurant yet?
Hope to make this time. Cherrio and thank you again,
Margaret
-
milestones will probably be a quieter atmosphere for all of us to chat.......
just my two cents.....
I'm looking forward to this..... :-)
Tom
-
I agree with Tom about Milestones
K
-
Ok...I'm making an executive decision here.....Milestones...Yorkdale...1:00 p.m...Sunday...August 24, 2008 ;D
mab
p.s. OK the deciding factor was that my youngest son has eaten there and he said the desserts were awesome........As he is the sweet tooth in my family :D......Enough said ;D Oh...and the other food was good too :)
-
Perfect!! See you then
Karen
-
Right! well done Mab.
I'll see you all there :)
Genie
*** P.S. Mavador and Willys Son will be also be there.
-
Thank you ;D
mab
-
Hi All:
I can join the group on August 24/08! Meet you at Milestone at Yorkdale 1 pm. I've now made arrangements to get there.
Homegrandchild :)
-
I'll be there, too!
How will we know each other? I guess the first arrivals will leave word with the restaurant staff?
Regards,
Josephine
-
well- we'll all be put at the same table ;-)
seriously though - what about some basic grand and toy name tags with our nicks (or our nick and their relation to us for our guests)
Tom
-
Well the reservation will be under my name/Rootschat and I plan to tell the restaurant who and what we are all about. So if you show up and say you are from Rootschat you will find us I'm sure. Oh and Tommy I have already got the name tags ;D
mab
-
I am going to try to come! So far, that looks like a good weekend.
-
That's great, mab! Thanks so much!
Regards,
Josephine
-
Hi MAB,
Good going. Now that things are settled, any chance of giving address and map/directions to the restaurant to us out of towners? :) Much appreciated, thx.
JDC
-
I was hoping that someone who drives could do that as I'm useless with directions :P MY OH says that I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag :-\
mab
-
Does this info on the mall's website help at all?
http://www.yorkdale.com/directions.asp
Regards,
Josephine

For a map and directions ..... take a look at:-
http://www.rootschat.com/links/03tk/
You can zoom out or move the map around and get directions from wherever you are coming ;)
-
Thank you ladies ;D
mab
-
Afternoon,
Ditto on the thx ladies. Shouldn't be any problem finding the place now. See you there.
JDC
-
I have pencilled this in, hope to make it. My computer crashed so will check in later in the month.
Happy Trails!!
Kiddo ;D

I'm will not be able to attend the get together, sorry. I was really looking forward to it too. I have been on EI for the last year, and then two weeks go I had a interview for a job I really wanted. I lost that chance because I did not have certain skills (skills they did NOT list in the original job advert).
So I have now applied for a student loan and gone back to school to get those skills. As such I no longer have EI and I will be very poor. Our only luxury is the computer because it is a necessity for communication with familes. I cannot afford to spend money for a meal at a top notch retsaurant. So I'm afraid I will have to decline the invitation. Sorry. I will be at school for the next 13 months.
Burrow Digger.

10 days to my son's wedding....am I stressed :-X...booking this place was a piece of cake compared to the trials and tribulations I'm having just booking a rehearsal dinner....we booked a restaurant and it turns that they have closed :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o...no notice to us......we only found out on the weekend....jeeeezz ::)
mab
p.s. the manager at Milestones wants to give us a "menu" because there are 22 of us rather than us picking from the standard menu. He's worried about delivery time of the meals and possible delays...I'll keep you posted. He wants us to enjoy our experience. I told him about Rootschat and there was a very long silence........he nice young gentleman :D
-
Mab,
no wonder you are stressed. Plan B, quick :o
I laughed at your report of the young manager's reponse when you told him about us.
He has no idea how patient we all can be,
some of us have been waiting years for a dead person to turn up ;D ;D ;D
-
Poor young guy doesn't realize what's going to descend on him on a very quiet Sunday ;D....I was thinking of staying with the standard menu but I don't think I could be so mean :D...hopefully everyone will agree. On the weekend it's usually students at this time of year...sons and daughters of someone ...trying to get money for university fees etc ...so if the "menu" is OK ??? I'll keep ya posted.
mab
-
I think the "Menu" idea is fine.
LOL genie, that's funny
Karen
-
Hi MAB,
I'm fine too with the menu... however you might some folks with special diet requirements though ie. diabetics. I trust they will let you know.
JDC
-
So far we only have one person with special diet requirements and I'm not sure what I can do for her. The fact that she's still coming is totally amazing. She and I will be definitely doing New York fries in the food court because I like them too ;D Once I get the "menu" she can let me know what she prefers or not.
mab
-
mab,
That's funny! I am going to have New York Fries beforehand, too, because I have Celiac and can't eat most restaurant food!
I am hoping the restaurant has good coffee!
Regards,
Josephine
-
So I got the set menus and I wasn't too enthralled. One menu was $19.99 and the other was $25.99. Good food but too much food for lunch time :o And, they may have to make substitutions because they are a "test store" ....sorry it's way too complicated for me to co-ordinate :-X
So, I think we will go with the standard menu. Lots of good stuff. I ran it past Genie and she agrees. We are there to chat and who cares how long it takes to get our food....we won't notice because we'll be too busy yakking and getting to know each other which is the whole point ;D
mab
-
Well I'm glad we didn't pick yesterday for the date of the meet. They evacuated Yorkdale Mall.
Hope anyone who was in the area of the explosion is fine.
Karen
-
It woke my family up and they went out side to see what happened. I thought it was thunder because we were having a really bad storm at the time. I went back to sleep and missed it all ::)
mab
-
I saw the tv coverage -- what a horrible event!
mab -- how far are you from that location? (Oh, to be a sound sleeper.) :) :)
Kathleen
-
I live just west of Yonge between Yonge and Sheppard and Yonge and Finch...my family could see the fire cloud from our back porch and hear all the subsequent explosions.......far away of course. My son said it was like a popping sound and then kind of like a fire cracker display after each pop. Can you imagine what it must have been like for the people who lived closer ???
mab
-
Karen et al:
Glad you put the notice back up,,,as I haven't been online for awhile.
I was wondering if the explosion was going to cancel our 'meet and greet' but sounds like the Yorkdale Mall is back in operation.
I was kind of looking forward to using Milestone's Gluten free menu as I too am Celiac, but will probably be able to find something to order off the regualr menus. I too agree, I'm not in for the $25 lunch, but as long as they keep the coffee coming,,,we know the chatting will flow anyway.
I'm coming to Toronto on Aug 22 (to stay with my daughter and to attend a Blue Jay's game and then stay to attend our gathering) but will check online over that weekend in case any plans/locations change. Guess that is the only way to get in contact with those of us coming from out of town.
Mab....sorry about all the 'stressors' around your son's wedding. Just keep smiling...they will get married in spite of all the mysteries,,,but just enjoy the day!

Not a problem Homey...I have advised the restaurant that there are two people who would be interested in Gluten free alternatives and they have made a note of that on our reservation.

should i bring a laptop and portable internet for those who need ancestry look ups?

Tom:
I for one would appreciate it if you were able to bring your laptop. I won't be lugging mine as I'm 'travelling light'. That way you can share any research tips with those of us that have not had as much luck in searching as we'd like. I'm always asking 'where did you go to find that?"..so still have lots to learn.
thanks,

Rehearsal over...check...rehearsal dinner...check.....tomorrow is the big day....it'd better not bl**dy rain >:(
Even with a set menu at the rehearsal dinner at a different restaurant, it took ages for the food to arrive so I feel better about doing the standard menu because it really doesn't matter does it :-\ I think I'm in stress mode ;D...Next weekend I will be my usual normal sane self....maybe 8)
mab........ ;D
-
Have a great day tommorrow mab!!!
And remember rain is good luck if does happen.
Karen

Yes...so I'm told but we have had rain everyday this week so far. They are getting married at U of T and the parking is quite far from the chapel :P ::) Fingers crossed..... :D

So I'm now officially a MIL ;D....it was a wonderful day...the weather co-operated and it was a very moving ceremony that they wrote themselves ......many tissues were used by all ....I'm still blubbering as I remember stuff....... :'( ....and I added my new daughter-in-law to my tree ;D
Off topic I know but whatever...... :)
So it's getting close to our get together and I wanted to put this post close to the top again just in case there are any late joiners to our meeting on August 24th ;D

Ken,
Remember to email me when you're ready to do some research! It would be fun to try to lend a helping hand or just meet up to go to the library, etc.

I can't let MAB take the blame for the dodgy photos :D
It was my fault for borrowing, what I thought was, a better camera than my old clunker :'(
Here's one more.

Note for next year...don't take the pictures inside the restaurant ...do it outside ;D I forgot that pic Genie and it was the only one that turned out ok...... :-\

I do think you are right about the lighting in the restaurant MAB, my eyes went all funny in there..... NO! I didn't have a drop .... I got witnesses :D :D :D

The son said that we should have checked where the lighting was coming from...blah blah blah...and we should of had a tripod... blah blah blah .....it's easy for him to say he has all that stuff.....and I don't think a tripod would have fit in your purse Genie :-\ Next time I'm dragging him along with me and he can take the pics for us ::)
