Title: Ontario Rootschat Meeting - 2008
Post by: KarenM on Thursday 22 May 08 00:39 BST (UK)
Hello Everyone,

Just thought I would start this thread now to see who is interested in attending another meet in Ontario.

August seemed to be a good time.

Last time we met at Kelsey's by the Airport in Toronto.

Does anyone have another venue in mind?

Suggestions most welcome!!

Hi Kath,

I was thinking the Toronto area as that seems to be the most convenient for people coming from the North, East and West.

Karen,

That's fine. I am actually in central NY, so Ottawa or Kingston is more feasable for me, but I am sure there are more people able to make it to Toronto. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Toronto would be too much of a trip for me this summer, as we have several trips planned for the summer already, but I certainly won't rule it out for the future. I hope it works out.

Great idea, Karen!

Something on the subway line would be ideal for me, if possible.

Hi Karen,

Gr8 idea, I should be in that area during my vacation and family reunion in S. Ont. during August. Since I'm situated in N. Ont, any where in T.O area is fine with me.

I live in Toronto so anywhere on the subway would be fine with me.  Thanks.

Hi Karen.

I missed the last one so would very much like to go this time.

I live East of Toronto and would prefer S. Ontario.

The last two/three weeks in June are out for me.

I can't drive, so would have to be easily accessible by public transit, if in Toronto.

Chinatown?  Either Spadina or Steeles/Kennedy (Scarborough).  They have nice big round tables.

Hi everyone

Karen, if you ever hold one in Yorkdale, I could make that much more easily than the Airport or other spots. I'm about 2 1/2 hours north and getting to Yorkdale is not too complicated for me.

Hi All,

If memory serves, last year meeting was held at the Kelsey's on T.O. near Steels and can't remember crossroad. This was a nice place... but if another place is better for everyone then lets go for it  ??? I will be coming down from northern northwestern Ontario, so which end of T.O doesn't matter to me  :) Keep me posted too.

Yorkdale is kindof in the middle of Toronto, I think  ::)  and on the subway line, so that might be a good spot and easy access to the 401.

How about a date:  August 17th ok??? That's a Sunday

Yorkdale is basically where 400 and 401 meet, so it's really easy to get to from almost anywhere ,and as you said it is on the subway line. I have to check the date, I have a wedding in Kingston in August but I am not sure when!

HI Folks,

Yorkdale is fine with me as well. Please forgive my ignorance of Yorkdale but I find most malls have very few "regular" restaurants in them and focus on the food court quick food model and I assume Yordale uses that model.  I suggest that we meet in a regular restaurant (ie Kelsey's, Boston, etc) that is either in the mall or close by. Also when the time gets closer, I'd appreciate some directions on how to get there. 17 or 24th of August is good for me. Looking forward to meeting everyone there.

Yorkdale Mall has two restaurants that I know of:  The Pickle Barrel and The Rainforest Cafe.  I could double-check that, if anyone would like me to peek at the phone book and make a call.  I think the Chapters bookstore had a little cafe the last time I was there.  (I don't go to the mall very often.)

Josephine

I googled and it has a few other places to eat...

Casey's Grill & Bar
Milestone's Grill & Bar
Moxies Classic Grill
Picklebarrel
Rainforest Cafe
Tim Horton's

Good stuff, mab!

The Timmy's is small and, in my limited experience, it's often too crowded to get a seat.  I wouldn't count on being able to find a spot in there.

The Rainforest Cafe is noisy.

Ontario Rootschats meeting confirmed with the date yet?  If you booked  August 17th it would be hard for me to accept that because my daughter who will expect her first baby at that time, and she wanted me in her delivery room at the hospital but if the baby come early before August 17th then I will come down but her baby due was supposed on August 17th but doctor said it might be on August 25th.  Who knows.  Wait and see, Have you confirmed where and when for the meeting?

I would love get together near Square One in Mississauga???  Any ideas?  Please let me know thanks

Hi, Maggie:

I'm not very good at directions, but here goes.

The restaurant will be inside the mall.

When you get off the subway at Yorkdale, there will be one exit from the platform.  You will go down the stairs or escalator and then you will go through the turnstiles.

After the turnstiles, there is a set of doors.  Do not go outside.  Turn left; this will take you through an enclosed walkway (up some stairs, down some other stairs) and through a set of doors into the mall.

You will walk straight along the corridor for a little bit (some little stores, a CIBC bank machine and a Tim Horton's on the left, windows on the right) until it opens up into the bigger mall area.

The mall was renovated in recent years and is quite large.  You will have to find a "You Are Here" map/directory and locate the restaurant on it and then make your way through the mall.  There are "Information" booths scattered about in case you get lost.  Store clerks should also be able to point you in the right direction.  (As you might guess, I get lost very easily.)

I hope you can make it.  Of course, your daughter and grandchild are your top priority.  I hope the birth goes smoothly for her!

Please feel free to bring your friend to help translate and to join in the fun:  the more the merrier!

Regards,
Josephine

Good idea Karen...so I'm looking at the survey and there are 10 people who have responded  ...8 of which want August 24th. Anyone out there that does want to go please respond to the survey so we have at least some idea of a head count. Then I have no problem with calling both places to see what they have available. It would be cool to have a room or separate space so we can all yak at the same time and not bother other diners  ;D

If you could call and check it out that would be great.

I called both Milestones and Caseys. Milestones said they had an area were they could put about 20 people. Casey's is more open concept but they said they could put tables together for us. So..... ???

I've never eaten at either of these restaurants so I can't recommend one over the other. They both seems to have variety as far as food goes.

I'm will not be able to attend the get together, sorry. I was really looking forward to it too. I have been on EI for the last year, and then two weeks go I had a interview for a job I really wanted. I lost that chance because I did not have certain skills (skills they did NOT list in the original job advert).

So I have now applied for a student loan and gone back to school to get those skills. As such I no longer have EI and I will be very poor. Our only luxury is the computer because it is a necessity for communication with familes. I cannot  afford to spend money for a meal at a top notch retsaurant. So I'm afraid I will have to decline the invitation. Sorry.  I will be at school for the next 13 months.

10 days to my son's wedding....am I stressed  :-X...booking this place was a piece of cake compared to the trials and tribulations I'm having just booking a rehearsal dinner....we booked a restaurant and it turns that they have closed  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o...no notice to us......we only found out on the weekend....jeeeezz ::)

mab

p.s. the manager at Milestones wants to give us a "menu" because there are 22 of us rather than us picking from the standard menu. He's worried about delivery time of the meals and possible delays...I'll keep you posted.  He wants us to enjoy our experience. I told him about Rootschat and there was a very long silence........he nice young gentleman  :D

I laughed at your report of the young manager's reponse when you told him about us.

Poor young guy doesn't realize what's going to descend on him on a very quiet Sunday  ;D....I was thinking of staying with the standard menu but I don't think I could be so mean  :D...hopefully everyone will agree. On the weekend it's usually students at this time of year...sons and daughters of someone ...trying to get money for university fees etc ...so if the "menu" is OK  ??? I'll keep ya posted.

So far we only have one person with special diet requirements and I'm not sure what I can do for her. The fact that she's still coming is totally amazing. She and I will be definitely doing New York fries in the food court because I like them too  ;D Once I get the "menu" she can let me know what she prefers or not.

mab

That's funny!  I am going to have New York Fries beforehand, too, because I have Celiac and can't eat most restaurant food!

I am hoping the restaurant has good coffee!

So I got the set menus and I wasn't too enthralled. One menu was $19.99 and the other was $25.99. Good food but too much food for lunch time  :o  And, they may have to make substitutions because they are a "test store" ....sorry it's way too complicated for me to co-ordinate  :-X

So, I think we will go with the standard menu. Lots of good stuff. I ran it past Genie and she agrees. We are there to chat and who cares how long it takes to get our food....we won't notice because we'll be too busy yakking and getting to know each other which is the whole point  ;D

I live just west of Yonge between Yonge and Sheppard and Yonge and Finch...my family could see the fire cloud from our back porch and hear all the subsequent explosions.......far away of course. My son said it was like a popping sound and then kind of like a fire cracker display after each pop. Can you imagine what it must have been like for the people who lived closer  ???

Karen et al:

Glad you put the notice back up,,,as I haven't been online for awhile.

I was wondering if the explosion was going to cancel our 'meet and greet' but sounds like the Yorkdale Mall is back in operation.

I was kind of looking forward to using Milestone's Gluten free menu as I too am Celiac, but will probably be able to find something to order off the regualr menus. I too agree, I'm not in for the $25 lunch, but as long as they keep the coffee coming,,,we know the chatting will flow anyway.

I'm coming to Toronto on Aug 22 (to stay with my daughter and to attend a Blue Jay's game and then stay to attend our gathering) but will check online over that weekend in case any plans/locations change. Guess that is the only way to get in contact with those of us coming from out of town.

Mab....sorry about all the 'stressors' around your son's wedding. Just keep smiling...they will get married in spite of all the mysteries,,,but just enjoy the day!

The son said that we should have checked where the lighting was coming from...blah blah blah...and we should of had a tripod... blah blah blah .....it's easy for him to say he has all that stuff.....and I don't think a tripod would have fit in your purse Genie  :-\ Next time I'm dragging him along with me and he can take the pics for us  ::)

Howdi Folks,

Finally made it back home.

Congrats Maggie, enjoy the new family member.

Thx for organizing the meet and posting the pix MAB.  I had a great time meeting the new folks and visiting with last year's attendees. Looking forward to doing same next year and seeing everyone online between now and then:-)
