Hi Rita, I went to Fourth Avenue School as I lived close by. Was just one house and three shops from the Library and the Three Rabbits. My mum is buried in the City of London Cemetary. when I was a child, the area opposite the shops was bombed out and there was a big crater there and we used to throw snowballs at one another from one side to the other of the craee. Last time I was there in 1998 there is shops built on that site and as far as I can remember the Pub was the Charringtons. I hadn't noted a Chemist like someone had said. Lived in the district up to 1957.
-
I had a little friend who was Jewish named Adrian, she went to the same school as myself she lived in Romford Road right near the Pub also.
-
Hi
833 Romford Road is now "Anthonys Pharmacy"
Big red bus in the way on google streetview.
The road "opposite" is Rabbits Road (Romford Road end of Aldersbrooke Road)

Hi
Just to try to complete the picture
736-740 is HMJames, 742 is Sureya's Hairdressers, 744 is The Bible Bookshop.
My guess is that your man lived in the flat(s) above the shop(s)?
Ray

the Rabbits was still there until recently. Went past yesterday, it seems to have become some kind of posh watering hole under another name. The chemist is next door, has been there for many years, then the hairdressers.
I believe your best bet is to contact the Archives and Local Studies at Stratford Library. I think their phone number has not changed recently: 0208 430 6881 or try archiveslocalstudies at newham.gov.uk

795 Romford Road was Matthews the butchers as a teenager i lived with my parents in the flat above

The shops have all on the intersection was called the Three Rabbits, then in 1998 I noted it was called Charringtons. the opposite corner was the Library and opposite that was a stamp collectors shop. Opposite that in 1989 first overseas trip home. There was a pram shop at one stage.

For a picture of the building see

Thanks for that. It doesnt look anything like I remember it. When I was a little girl the corner opposite was a bombed out hole we kids used to play in and throw snowballs at one another across the hole. My mother is buried in the city of london cemetary. I live a few doors from the pub. Opposite but one of the bombed out hole.

The building opposite the Three Rabbits (also known as the Rabbit Hotel) was indeed hit on the 23/09/1940 with 26 fatalities (the CWGC gives the address as 742 Romford Road).
I do have some further information so feel free to contact me.

I thought your post was interesting Janet. I hadnt seen your post before. I lived across the roafdd in Fourth avenue from birth until aged 12. the side the Chip shop was on. two doors down from there. I and my family along with little friends played snowblls in the bombed out are opposite where the Three Rabbits pub was. I beleive the building is in use for something else now. My mum is buired in the City of London Cemetary, a short walk from the Three Rabbits.

Ray I am familiar with Aldersbrooke road are as I was a small child in Aldesbrooke Childrens homes several times until the age of 8 or 9. My mum died when I was 9 and a half and I was lucky not to have to go to the homes again. I was fostered locally by a Salvation Army couple who really took good care of me. mY sister was also fostered locally by a friends family and two brothers went to dr Barnados..

Which one is your relative? Once I know I can supply more information.
I am guessing it was Robert Hancock.
According to the Police report, he was found dead at the scene - and taken to Manor Park Cemetery ARP Mortuary (a temporary site). His address was stated to be 5 Washington Avenue E12. His aged was stated to be 45
Many of those who were injured were taken to Aldersbrook Hospital, though some were also taken to East Ham Memorial Hospital in Shrewsbury Road.
Robert Hancock's next door neighbour, Edwin Herbert Hull (Number 7 Washington Avenue), aged 70, was injured in the leg, in 1944, in another (non-related) bomb raid.
-
Yes thats him but he was never in his 40's he was born 1883 and serverd in canadian army during WW1 and became a Canadian before moving back to england i never knew him as he died 2 years before I was born thankyou very much for your help
-
You have to realise that, in the mortuary (following a raid) the Police guessed the age of the deceased, based on appearance. If the body was claimed, the authorities relied on someone (a relative/friend) to fill in any details which they had been unable to solve.
Some of the WW2 mortuary records survive, in the local records offices. The surviving paperwork includes possessions found on the body, and which undertaker was going to carry out the burial. It will also tell you who claimed the body.
-
I think it was a lady who called herself Mrs Hancock but was not. also know he was a vain man so quess he lowered his age to lady friend

I lived opposite but one house from that bombed site. We played snowballs in it. I left there for Australia when I was 12 going on 13. the owners of the Fish and Chip shop lived next door. We left January 1957, so was still a wreck at that stage. next time I saw it was about April 1989 and it was a Pram shop on the site and the three rabbits appeared to be the Charrington Pub. I went again in 1996, but mainly to the City of London Cemetary where my mum is buried.
