Can anyone tell me what the abbreviation
Jno stands for in censuses I have read ??
Thanks Mary

Hi Mary - it's John........
:-\ unless he's one of mine of course, I have a John James, transcribed in 1901 as Gas Gas but he was only ever called Jack!
-
Jonothan?
Casalguidi

Definitely John. Just one of the very common abbreviations that were not intuitive - see Alfres, short for Alfred though quite why is beyond me. The other common ones are Jas, Jos, Wm, Geo. I'm not aware of the same thing being quite so common amongst the female side of the population - Elizabeth is about the only name I've ever seen.

I maybe wrong but I always thought it stood for Junior
but John is correct just viewed this: http://www.nationalarchivist.com/index01/nameAbbr.cfm

If Junior is used to denote the child of someone with the same name, it tends to be abbreviated jn or jun or jr but always in lower case.

Came across this.

This is something that pops up periodically, and opinion is often divided between a John and Jonathan.
I imagine that the OP has sorted it out since she asked the question 15 years ago. ;D
