Hi Chris
Noticed your message - I have an interest in the Cockbain family who were stone masons in the Bigrigg/ Bankend area.

I have a small interest in the Cockbains of the Whitehaven area.
Ruth Cockbain Cowan married my 1st cousin 3 times removed George Pickering in 1875. Her grandmother was Ruth Cockbain, born c1800 at St. Bees. An entry on the IGI shows a baptism at St Bees in 1799, daughter of John & Isabel.
My Pickerings were also stonemasons in the area. My gggg grandfather William Pickering was at Bankend in 1793 when my ggg gf was christened. The cottages there still survive.

Hi Andrew
Great to hear from you.
It's getting late here in Aus. but sounds promising...
Luke Cockbain (son of Henry and Suzannah Peat born Dalston 1765) was living Bankend by 1794.
We have a busy day tomorrow but tomorrow evening I'll get back to you with more info. about Luke, his family and Bankend.

Our ancestors were living only a few yards apart then. William Pickering was baptised on Christmas Day 1793, and your Cockbains were there before 1794. Doesn't leave a big gap where they could have missed each other!
There are only 5 houses at Bankend, and one of them belonged to the owner of the quarry.
If you PM me with an email address, I'll forward a pic of the cottages.

Hello Andrew, I am Susan Robertson (nee Doloughan) and am looking into my family history which is very tied up with Bank End Quarry, My g/father Henry James Doloughan owned it for a few years around 1901 but the family had lived, worked, been born and died there from the 1860's. I am busy at the moment doing a breakdown of the census available of the families living there. My father, Harry Doloughan was probably the last Doloughan born there in 1905. I saw from one of your messages you had a photograph of the cottages there and would really appreciate a download if it is not too much trouble. If you still have an interest in Bank End I can pass on info. I am busy with.

Hi Andrew,
from one of the Census either 1841 or 1851 George & Sarah Cockbain who leased the Quarry, lived at the Cottage at the end closest to the Quarry. I only have a photo of that cottage that I took on a visit doing research in 2003.
Did the leasee always lived in that cottage, and do you now how long George Cockbain had the lease.Hope to make the journey gain all the way from australia again soon.

Hi Jilly, I am Susan Robertson, nee Doloughan & I am also looking at Bank End and also Nicholsons, as Agnes Doloughan married John Nicholson a joiner, and one of their sons Alexander emigrated to Wisconsin in 1913. I am in touch with his grand-daughter who is looking for relatives.
Bank End - John Nicholson, his grandfather was the proprietor in 1829 of Bank End, (I think it was also known as Pallaflat). His widow Martha and family lived there until she died. I have quite a bit of info. on the Nicholsons and have a tree on "ancestry". I am not sure how to get in touch with you to exchange info.

My married name is Nicolson
I am looking for info on the Dickinson side
Any info?
Thx

Hi Jill, no sorry, my info is all Nicholsons or Bank End. I was just going to take a look at the 1851 census to see Dickinsons, but an important point is, there was more than one quarry at Bank End, borne out by the fact that an Association of Bank End Quarries was formed in the 1890's by John Smith, the builder. Bank End was a large area and initially owned by St. Bees Church and the main quarry took it's name from the area. My grandfather owned Bank End Quarry from 1901 until McKays bought it in 1909. Alexander Doloughan was also a Quarry Manager there for his brother John. There seems to have been many proprietors for just one quarry, but I am still finding out how it all worked! Sue

Jill, I have just taken a look at the census and see Dickinsons were in a cottage near to Loughrigg Farm and also Whangs Quarry. Also he was a stone-merchant. The No. 12 actually refers to the Schedule No. for the census. If I am not mistaken there were two cottages near to Loughrigg Farm. This cottage was home to another Doloughan - Henry my grt-grt-grandfather and he lived there from the mis-1860's to 1879 probably straight after your relative.
From all the research I have done I do recognise the Dickinson name but will have to gather my wits together to come up with info. Sue

1851 Transcript of the 1st three cottgaes at bank end that might help

1851 Census part b which contains the last 2 Cottages at Bank End.
You will note that their were two operators at this Quarry, how it worked I am not sure if it was partnership.
My interest is Alice Cockbain sometimes spelt Allise.
Alice is my G/Grandmother and died in Christchurch 1880. Family finally reseleted in NSW, and have many hundreds of offspring.
I have other info on quarries from an article written in recent years.
If anyone wants higher res. over 1mb each contact me via Personal Message

Thanks Alan, you have actually shown me the way to go regarding getting a clearer view of "who lived where" and will put it into practice for 1871 & 1881 census. Thanks. Sue

Sue
my pleasure this forum and the people on it have been very helpful to me in the 4 days that I have been using it.
The above Census Transcript was photograhed from a book at the Whitehaven Records office in Sept 2003.
I am sure if you show these photos, they will know if they have the same transcriptions for later Census's
