Title: Marriage Overseas
Post by: linden on Friday 16 May 08 20:23 BST (UK)
Is this the right place to ask about military marriages , births and deaths overseas ?
Is it the sort of thing that I could ask if anyone can do a look up ?

I'm looking fo the marriage of Peter Waters and Jane ? .

The first child I have a record for is Lina Waters , born Rangoon  1867 , so her parents must have married somewhen before that .
There may have been a son , Warwick , born ca.1870 .

Peter Waters would probably have been a Bandmaster .

Any advice welcomed .

hi - just peeping, but also on the hunt for info about a military (Royal Artillery) marriage which probably took place in Ireland around 1840 before the couple, with child, were posted to West Indies. Anyone know how I can get any info so I can apply for a certificate please?

You can try familysearch.org .
I don't know whether Irish births and marriages for the Military would appear on the Overseas Register .
If they were registered in Ireland then you may find church registers for any denomination except the Church of Ireland . If you are lucky , you might find some C of I documents .
There won't be any certificates at all for 1840 .

I found the date of an army marriage overseas [in Nova Scotia] on my g grandfather's army record at Kew.  I think findmypast do have the overseas register.

Do you know what regiment he was in? You also need to know the date of discharge to be able to look up the army record at Kew.

Hello Josey .
Which "bit" of the Army record listed the marriage ?
Does it list the children as well ?

I found children born in the 1820's  -  one in England , 3 in India , on familysearch . I haven't found a marriage (probably in Church of Ireland) .

But one of these children was Peter Waters , who also joined the army , and I haven't been able to find his marriage or the births of most of his children .

It was on the last page 'Military History Sheet', with names of wife & children.

I found a Peter Waters marrying on findmypast in the GRO Consular Marriages for 1836-37 page number almost illegible but is three digits ending in 95 [so is x95].

Whoops, should  have said the marriage was in Madras.

Was that Peter Waters marrying in Madras 1836-37 ?
I felt hope  -  then I realised that Peter was only 6 in 1836 .
You will probably see his birth in Poonah in 1829 then his father's death in Colobah in 1830 and then his mother's remarriage .

I realise that , when I've visited Kew , I haven't seen Army Records . I've had all my information from the Regimental Pay Books and the Attestation details .
Do they have individual army records ?

They can't have married more than a few years before the birth of Lina (incidentally, she's Sina on the IGI baptism record as you may already know) because the 1881 census shows that Jane was only 34 in 1881 and therefore only about 20 at the time of Lina's birth: RG11/4107/76/47

Unless of course this Jane was not Peter's first wife "Jane" - if 1881's correct the couple were separated in age by 18 years.

Anyway, I can't see any marriage of Peter Waters between 1860 and 1885 in the GRO Overseas (i.e. Consular and Army) Marriages.

Sorry about that.

Obviously you could order the birth certificate of one of their English-born children in order to find out Jane's maiden name.

The individual army record is filed by date of discharge.  My g grandfather was discharged in 1889 [fortunately for me as after 1883 they are filed alphabetically so easier to find although earlier researchers do not always put the box back totally in order!].  From 1873 - 1882 they are organised in 4 groups under artillery, cavalry, corps & infantry; from 1854 - 1873 under the regiment. However, I do not know whether the records of those who died in service are included in this WO97 series.

Thank you Anna and Josey .
Peter spent nearly 20 years in Australia and New Zealand . Most of his regiment remained there as settlers when the time came to leave . But Peter returned to England and he must have married at that time . I suppose it is possible that he could have already been married and widowed .
I  have sent for the birth cert of one of the children to find Jane's surname .
A friend thought there might have been a Warwick Waters born in India . If he was Peter's then he must have died in infancy .
Thank you both for all your help !
