That's an interesting site but it's not much use to people if they only have a surname. You can list all surnames on the database ... there are fourteen Alexanders listed but I've no idea of Christian names. 1918-21 is almost a hundred years ago ... how many people would know their ancestor's identity number? I much prefer a database where information is provided by just entering a surname.

Hi
Just wanted to say 'Great Site'
I found a possible match for my gggrandfather on the site.I contacted Southampton and their reply has confirmed that it is him.
At last I've found out which county in Ireland he was born and his date of birth.I was even lucky enough to receive a photograph on the reverse of his card.
I'm really pleased as I didn't think I would ever find out where he came from.
Many thanks
Neptune :)

Another 2000 names were added a few days ago, taking total to 18000. Surnames now complete to Mac and Mc. Next update end of September. ETA for completion - another six months?

This is a great site! Unfortunately my sea faring great grandfather died in 1886! :'(
He was variously described on certificates as sailor, mate, captain of a vessel and Captain Merchant Service.
Any one know where else I might search? I asked a researcher to look for him at Kew with no result, some years ago. I suspect he was captain on the passenger ferry to Liverpool! 8)

Hello Kooky,
A captain on the passenger ferry to Liverpool is a good start.
There were ferries for Liverpool from several Irish ports. Most
of the companies running those ferries are fairly well known
and there should be records for some of them.

Thanks Christopher! I was joking, but maybe there could be a lead here?

Kooky, here is a little bit of the history of " Isle of man steam packet co." from 1830 to 1904. It has ships and a list of captains with some pictures of the captains. This company sail regular to and from Liverpool. That might help you?
