Title: Grave location, Swan, Sick Childrens Hospital Edinburgh
Post by: BlueTans on Saturday 10 May 08 11:50 BST (UK)
This is a bit of a long shot but I know there is a lot of information out there and someone may be able to point me in the right direction, so I'll have a go!

I am looking to locate the grave / burial site of a child that died at the Sick Children's Hospital in Edinburgh in May 1945.  Does anyone know how I can find this information?  I have tried the hospital, but no success and am not sure which graveyard they used.  The childs name was William McIntosh Swan.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi Bluetans

I would think that although the child died in Edinburgh, the burial place would have been in his home town/village.

A few of mine who died in hospital in the 1930's and 1940's were buried in their home village.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

The family believe it was the hospital graveyard he was buried in and that he was not taken back to his home town.  If I have no joy in Edinburgh I will try his home town as a longshot.

Hi BlueTans

Have you considered contacting Edinburgh City Council to find out what records they maintain? You have a precise date for young William's death which would help in any searches.

Hi Monica

I will try the council again, I may be more successful with the telephone details on the link you provided.

Thank you!

Try the archives of the newspapers in his home area for a funeral notice. That should give a place for a burial or cremation. There is no graveyard that I have ever heard of within the grounds of the Sick Childrens' Hospital.

The nearest cemetery to the Sick Kids is The Grange, a few block away on Beaufort Road, the Church is on Kilgraston Road and backs on the the cemetery.

If the child was buried locally that is your most likely place I would think. The next nearest being East Preston Street.

I hope you find the information you are looking for.

ADP - I have been trying to find the Stirling local paper for that time with very little success!  A trip to the library in Stirling is planned to try to resolve that!

KirstyG - I tried The Grange and no success, I have not tried the East Preston Street one so I may do some looking there.  I think the hospital used several graveyards but have not been able to find out which and when!  I have got a call into the Lothian NHS archives to see if they can turn anything up, but I don't think I am going to find where little William was laid to rest.

Thank you both for your help though!

Many thanks

Just thought I would let you know that we have located the grave!  Thanks to a very helpful people at Perth Council we who were able to search all the cemeteries in Perthshire (the family lived in the area at the time) and found the grave in Dunblane Cemetery.  We have also found his brothers grave!  I just hope all my searches are as successful!

Thank you for the advice people gave on this one, it is much appreciated.
