Title: Grantham Look-up
Post by: BAK51 on Friday 09 May 08 12:48 BST (UK)
Is anyone able to check directory and voter lists for the early 1960's in Grantham?  I am looking for a Turner family living on Shakespeare Ave, particularly their first names.

Thank You!!

Thank you, Kathy!

The people I am looking for were my grandmother's nephew & family.  I doubt that generation is still living, but maybe their children - my best hope of finding existing cousins.  If you spot anything else that might point me in that direction, it is most appreciated.

Hi Bak

Have found the following names of Turner family living at 29 Shakespeare Ave.

1957-1964

HERBERT LESLIE TURNER
MONICA TURNER
DAVID.L.W.TURNER

1965-68

ONLY HERBERT + MONICA LIVED THERE.

I will check next Sat and see if David married as that could be the reason he left home also see if I can find out anymore about the Turner families movements.

Hi Kathy -

Herbert is a new name for me.  I have a few pieces of correspondence to my grandmother with first names, but not this one.  On Herbert's mother's death cert., the informant is listed as "Mrs. Turner, daughter-in-law" so I was looking for who that would be and you have found it!  Other siblings in this family were born in the early 1900's in India (father in the military), so Herbert might have been in his 50's-60's in the 1960's.  I appreciate this information so much and would be thrilled if you can provide any further help.

Thanks and thanks again!!!

Hi Bak

I will check on the micro fiche for Grantham cemetary which has a surname index and see if any of the family are on the list its surprising what they put on the headstones (providing they had one) age etc.

Hi Kathy -

Just wondering, if we (well....you) can find a death date for Herbert or Monica, will local newspapers have a death notice with surviving children?

I volunteer at a 170 year old Victorian cemetery locally and am always amazed by the information you can find.  Of course, I wish my family had written their life stories in stone, but that would be too easy, wouldn't it?

Thanks for all your input.

Hi Kathy -

Herbert's father was in the Army in India and I believe that is where all the children were born.  The first signs of them back in England are around the 1920's I believe, so I think the children were all likely married in England.  Parents Sydney & Georgina, both born in England, are buried in Southampton and that is where I've found some leads to other children.  Maybe Herbert's occupation took him to Grantham?  I imagine Monica was born in England.  I tried searching for a Herbert-Monica marriage, with no luck.   I'm hoping you will find their life story written up in the local news  ;) ;D!!

Hi Bak

Thanks for info. You know the old saying "Many a true word is spoken in jest".
If David married in Grantham and it is in the church records held in the library it should give his fathers occupation. It is also possible that Herbert married in Grantham (Fingers crossed). That would be a bonus for you.

Hi BAK

Just to let you know that the microfilm and microfiche machines are both out of action at the moment.I was on the machine this morning at Grantham library when it made a funny noise and then the next thing it switched it self off!!! and it would not do anything so they have got to get the technition in to sort it out. Will go back next Sat if?? they have repaired it.
It is a BIG problem with both machines out of action for all researchers looking for information in Grantham area.
I did manage to look at some of the Turner names in Grantham cemetary records but did not find Herbert Leslies or Monica's names so far.

Cheers

Hi Geoffe

I must admit I felt guilty when it happened but was told I might ??? have done them a favour at the library as we have been waiting a few weeks now for the powers that be to either repair or replace the old Microfiche/film printer. So they might have to spend some of their money sooner than they thought

Cheers

Well, we were a roll there - oh, well - MACHINES, blah!!!  Thanks for giving it a go today.  I hope you like going to the library as much as I do (any excuse will do).

I'll stay hopeful for next week - appreciate your persistence.

Thanks Kathy -

I appreciate you sticking with it.  I have a quote request in to the Nat'l Archives for military discharge documents for Sydney.  If that's not too expensive to pursue, maybe it will confirm names too.

Fingers crossed all over the place!

Hi BAK

Have been back to library this morning and booked A??? machine for next Sat should be both machines up and running so they have reserved me one of them so will be able to look up Herbert & Monica's deaths etc.

I did look through Electoral Rolls and found that Herbert & Monica both lived 29 Shakespeare Ave in 1968 but only Monica lived there from 1970/76 so that has narrowed it down to 2 yrs to look in Grantham Journal for Herbert's            obituary.Unless of course he went into a home or something but will check on Saturday.

Cheers

Hi Kathy -

Just checking in, wondering if you will be able to check at the library any further.  Although it is past time, I still haven't heard back from the NA yet on my records request.  Kind of stuck.  I appreciate all you have done, so if it is too much to ask, I understand.

Kathy, you are a complete star, and I hope BAK appreciates just how much time it takes to check through over 18 months-worth of newspapers. (And yes, I know the obits are usually on the same page each week,  but it still takes time to wind the film on and read the entries.)

However, to the thread in general - am I missing something? Surely the logical thing is to check for deaths in the GRO Index first? Can't see any mention of that actually being done.
I appreciate the absence of a death registration in the GRO Index doesn't mean that a death didn't occur in that time span - could have happened abroad, in Scotland or Ireland, on board a cruise ship in the Mediterranean  :) , etc, and therefore you would have to look for an obit.
and Kathy even you said

If there's no likely Herberts on the GRO Index, how about looking for Monica's death registration, then hopefully finding her obit in the paper. That should tell you whether Herbert was still living, or alternatively give some clue about when when he died. And where, if it was out of the district.

Hi BAK51.  I know all about the Turner family and can answer all of your questions but I am intrigued as to who you are.  Please get in touch.

My Grandmother was Edith L. Turner, sister of Sydney J. Turner (1872-1951).  She was sent to Canada after the death of their father John in 1895.  Sydney was the father of the Herbert referenced in these messages.  Very anxious to share information.

Hi BAK51
I was interested to get your reply.  My name is Jayne Wilson and I grew up in Grantham. My grandfather on my mother's side was Herbert Turner but was known by everyone as Bert. Monica and Leslie had 3 children, the oldest being Monica (June to the family) who is my mum. She can remember meeting your grandmother, great aunt Edie  just after the war in Southampton at Georgina and Sydney's house when she was visiting from America/Canada. There was also an Aunt Hilda she can remember who was with Edith. I can provide you with further info if you want but can this be done by e-mail?
Regards
Jayne.

Hi Jayne :)

You should now be able to see little green scrolls on the left which is part of the messenging system.  You will be able to send your e-mail address to someone in a message, rather than posting it on the "board" - which is not allowed.  :o
