Just wondering if someone has any suggestions on how I can trace Thomas Sharp, Clergyman.
Unfortunately I have no other details. I have been tracing Granville Sharp born about 1829 and ordered a marriage certificate for Granville`s second marriage on 20th April 1865 at the parish church Islington. Middlesex.
This listed Thomas Sharp, Clergyman as his Father.
I have tried to find Granville Sharp in his early years to try and find Thomas but Granville in 1841 and 1851 appears to be in either school or college :-\ :-\
I have ordered marriage certificates for other relations and sometimes the Father has been listed but has deceased if the Father is no longer alive. So I assume Thomas Sharp is still alive in 1865 :-\ :-\
Many thanks for any suggestions, help or advice

Was Granville born in Greenwich?

Hi Mum44,
I have previously carried out some research and according to the Family Search website Granville Sharp born 10th October 1829 and christened on 18th November 1829 Union Chapel Sim Alley Church Street Independent Woolwich Kent England.
Parents Thos & Eleanor Sharp.
Hope this helps :-\ :-\

Well, it helps a little bit; family search IGI has baptisms for 6 other children of Thomas and Eleanor.
In 1841 an Eleanor Sharp is living in Camberwell with 3 of those named children>
HO107. p. 1051 /5 Fol. 45 Pg. 9
Living Surrey Terrace, Pack or Gap Road, Camberwell
Elenor Sharp 50 Indep
Amelia Sharp 15
Henry Sharp 8
Eliza Sharp 7
None born county. (Woolwich was in Kent at that time)
The 1841 sadly doesn't show married status so there is no way of knowing from that entry whether Thomas was still alive.
However, it may be a starting point, and it also seem likely that Thomas was not CoE clergy - perhaps the Independent Chapel may have some records ?

Thats absolutely superb information Mum44, thankyou so much. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
When I searched Family Search IGI I only found Granville and Henry G :( :( Who were the other four?, Amelia and Eliza I assume were two but I don`t know the rest :( :(
Many sincere thanks

Here are the other five:
William Francis Sharp B. 5 Apr 1820 Baptised 17 May 1820
Thomas Calvin Sharp B. 26 June 1822 Baptised 24 July 1822
Amelia Sharp B. 30 Mar 1825 Baptised 27 Apr 1825
Julia Augusta Sharp 28 Mar 1827 Baptised 30 June 1827
These four were all at:
Union Chapel Sim Alley Church St. Independent, Woolwich
However - bizzareley - there is also a baptism recorded for Julia Augusta on 13 June 1827 at Peckham Hanover Independent, Camberwell
Eliza Akehurst Sharp baptised 13 Mar 1837 Crown Street Soho Independent, Westminster
All these are extracted records, and I can't explain the Julia double, therefore, unless it was to do with her father being a clergyman. All the churches are Independents.
I hope this is useful

Many sincere thanks for your help and keen interest. ;D

Thanks very much casalguidi for that information ;D
Since I posted my original thread I`ve ordered and received a death certificate for Thomas Sharp. He died Sept 24th 1838 aged 46 so he would have been born around 1792.
According to Mum44`s reply his first born child was baptisted in 1820.
Just wondering if anyone has access to information that would tell me when and who he married?? We know his wife was Eleanor but would love to find out her maiden name, marriage location and date ;D
Really appreciate any help and assistance. Many thanks

Independent church baptisms can often give further details about the mother including her maiden name and sometimes her parents names. Knowing Eleanor's maiden name might help you find Thomas and Elaenor's marriage.
This website has the actual non-conformist parish registers indexed and online.

Thomas Sharp also left a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will
Will of Reverend Thomas Sharp, A M, Minister of Crown Street Chapel Soho of Saint Luke Chelsea , Middlesex 20 February 1839 PROB 11/1907
so that might give further information

Hi. This thread is a bit old but hopefully you are still getting alerts when someone replies. I can clear up the mystery as to why Julia Augusta appears in two baptism registers. I am researching Rev. Dr. William Bengo Collyer (1782-1854) who carried out the baptism.
Dissenting ministers tended not to baptise their own children - a colleague would do it. So there are other examples of Dr. Collyer coming to a minister's chapel to baptise the minister's child. He tended to record the baptism in the local register and in his own register back at Hanover Chapel, Peckham. The entry in the Hanover Chapel register says explicitly that Julia Augusta was baptised at the Woolwich chapel.
This is the explanation in this case: one event, two records of it. However, it is not unknown for children to be baptised twice - sometimes in different religions. The register for Hanover Chapel (which Collyer called an 'English Presbyterian' chapel) includes individuals who were also baptised in the Church of England, and I have found one who was also baptised in a Baptist chapel. See my website www.wbcollyer.org for info on Dr. Collyer (the site is a work in progress).
Also have a look at the Surman Index to dissenting ministers: find Thomas Sharp and look at the image of the index card - it contains more info about his career: http://surman.english.qmul.ac.uk/
