Hiya Jessy

As you say Anthony isnt listed but looking at the 1851 census his parents were both born Cumberland. On FreeBMD there is an Anthony Sowerby b 2/4 East Ward (Cumbria) ref 25 477 - perhaps he was registered there for some reason?

Also on the IGI is the marriage of William Sowerby to Ann Law 16.1.1825 Cumwhitton Cumberland

Thanks Willow,  Hes a mystery.  Im quite sure that isnt him but interesting about the possible parents I will have to investigate further.  I found him on the 1891 census where he is mentioned as 5 years old - all saints tynemouth northumberland but I wonder if that was just his baptism???? mmmmmm  Back to the drawing board.  Thanks again  Jess

Hiya Jessy

Looking at the 1851 census Margaret is also listed as b Northumberland but there isnt a listing on FreeBMD for a Margaret in Tynemouth but there is 1839 3/4 East Ward 25 402

Maybe Ann had a habit of going home to have her chikdren

OK gone brain dead

His mother is called Mary not Ann - DOUH!

But on the 1841 census they are are in Bongate East Ward Westmoreland - and Margaret is listed so to confirm Marys maiden name it might be worth ordering her certificate

Strangely the older children aren't listed but Thomas was baptised 9.4.1826 Renwick, Cumberland

And it was Mary Law not Ann as I stated earlier

Jessy,

Where did you get " All Saints Tynemouth " from ?

All Saints Parish was one of the four ancient parishes of Newcastle.

Tynemouth Parish was Christ Church

His birth place on censuses is mostly Newcastle. Some early census enumerators recorded "parish of birth" rather than " place of birth" !

Thanks Michael,  The census printout said All Saints,  Tynemouth,  Longbenton and I know they are two totally differnet areas.  All very confusing.  Im sure he is not the guy from Cumberland but I dont know where his details can be found.  Thanks for info.  Jess

Jessy,

All Saints-Tynemouth-Longbenton... are THREE different places... although All Saints and Longbenton were neighbouring parishes, the former within Newcastle, the latter outside of Newcastle.

I hope this is not me teaching grannie to suck eggs, but I think you need to identify all the characteristics of your great grandfather and focus on these.

Is the Sowerby family living in Walker, Parish of Longbenton, on Census 1851
(page ref 2411-85-12) "yours" ?

Hiya Michael

Yes thats the family

Jessy I cant see why you are discounting this Anthony from Cumberland. I know it says on the census he was born Northumberland but the census is only as good as the information the enumerator is told

In 1851 we have (so we all know what we are talking about)

Anthony Sowerby 51 M head b Carlisle Cumberland chemical labourer
Mary Sowerby 46 b M wife b Long Town Cumberland
Thomas Sowerby 25 son U b Carlisle Cumberland iron works labourer
William Sowerby 23 son U b Carslisle Cumberland pudler
Jane Sowerby 14 dau b All Saints Northumberland
Margaret Sowerby 11 dau b All Saints Northumberland
Elizabeth Sowerby 8 dau b All Saints Northumberland
Anthony Sowerby 5 son b All Saints Northumberland
Thomas Gillespie 21 nephew U b Scotland puddler
William Trotter 37 lodger U b Seaton ?? Northumberland puddler

Hi Willow,

William Trotter, the lodger gave his birth place as Seaton Sluice
(which at that time lay within Hartley, one of the eight  "townships" of the Parish of Earsdon)

The name "Sluice" was added after Lord Delaval added an additional exit to the sea for the Seaton Burn, to make the harbour safer ( to safeguard the exports of the products from his glassworks)

---------------------------------------------

Can anyone see this Sowerby family on Census 1841 ?

Tati,

You did very well to find the Sowerbys on Census 1841.

Ancestry has transcribed and indexed the family as SINSKY.

Anyway it is the right family... on C1871 Anthony junior gives his birth place as "West House(s)"

This was part of Byker, All Saints Parish, Newcastle.

The men of the familywere working in the chemical industry hygiene products etc.... Alkali labourers.

Hi friends,  I must apologise for not getting back my BT land line went down Friday morning and has just been mended today.  Sorry Willow I see what you ment about Anthonys parents  coming from Cumbria - once I saw your 1851 census I realized you were right.  Is there any page numbers for his birth cert so that I can try and order it again????  There must be a record of it somewhere,  Thanks again to the three of you for your help and sorry about not being able to respond to your posts until now.  Jess

Hiya Jessy

Glad you managed to get back online I know I feel like someones cut off my right arm when mine doesn't work

Yes it June 1/4 1847 vol 25 page 477 East Ward

If you order it from the GRO you can ask if they will check the parents names before they send it which will only cost you £3 if its the wrong one

Only thing I can think is that Mary went home to her mother to have the children thats why they are registered there - but why they are listed as being b Northumberland I dont know

If it is the right certificate I'm betting the Sarah Law I mentioned is her mother
