Title: DAVIES, Bridgend and around !!
Post by: daviessb on Thursday 08 May 08 07:02 BST (UK)
Hello everybody

I am searching for the DAVIES family from Glamorgan ( I think) !

John Morgan DAVIES was born 25 Jun 1912, 29 Commercial Street, Maesteg, Bridgend.
His father was Howell DAVIES an Ironmonger
Mother was Annie DAVIES nee THOMAS .

Howell aged 24 and Annie aged 27, married 23 Dec 1907 at The Register Office, Bridgend.
He is listed as an Ironmonger again, living at 49 Commercial St, Maesteg. Father also Howell DAVIES(deceased) Farmer.
Annie is living at Croft House Cyndda, Aberkenfig. Father Morgan THOMAS a coalminer.

We have Howell jnr's birth cert. 22 Jul 1883 'Fron Wen Row, Llangeinor?
Father Howell DAVIES same as marriage cert. and mother Hannah DAVIES formally PHILLIPS. Howell is a collier.

I have tried to find them on the census returns but I'm very unsure of the town's and villiages how close they are?
Does anyone with local knowledge have any idea which of the census returns could be correct? I have Ancestry but I don't want to get on the wrong track.

Would really appreciate any guidance.

Best Regard
Susan in Sunny Hot Dubai

Maesteg (my little home town) is about 10 miles or so from Bridgend. Aberkenfig is about 6 miles from Maesteg, between there and Bridgend - it's quite a small village.

Llangeinor isn't that far away either, just over the mountain from Maesteg in the next valley (Garw Valley).

If the family were collier's, all the locations are quite likely to be correct as the mining industry was in abundance in this area then - my lot moved from valley to valley to valley! Not easy with more popular surnames.

All should be in the Glamorgan returns to the best of my knowledge.

And if they were living in Commerical Street, and had an occupation like an Ironmonger, it's most likely that they had a shop as this si the main street in Maesteg - if I get a few minutes spare (I should be so lucky), I'll nip down town on Sunday and take a few snaps of the two premises - dependent what end of the street it was, it will either be commerical or residential premises - some of the shops still have the very old signage (incredibly faded) on them, so may be something of use there.

Not heard of Cyndda before though - unsure if it's part of the house name, or posisbly a mistranscribing of Tondu which is next to Aberkenfig?

I think this is Cymdda.  The Thomas family are there from 1881 - 1901, but I see you have this info from rootsweb.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/StBridesMinor/

I cannot locate Howell (dad or son) as a family, or with wife Hannah, they are very much in hiding at the mo.

Just a quick update:

29 Commerical Street is currently Janet Megins Dentist Surgery.

49 Commerical Street is possibly an Indian restaurant (may be Chinese actually), or may even now be a block of flats as it's a few doors down from the Malsters Arms (number 52). I know the flats used to be commercial premises up to a few years ago, but they look quite different now.

Thank you all for your replies  ;D
Will look at the sites and try again to find them.
Thought with Howell as a name it would be easier to find, how wrong you can be in Genealogy !!
Will get back to you, you are all so helpful.

Best Regards

Was sooo excited to see this post!   My great gran's mum was Mary Davies according to a census, or Margaret Davies according to her kids birth certs...she married James Price and thier children were Ann born 1868, Henry 1870, Daniel 1874, Edward 1877, and Margaret 1880. They all lived around the Bridgend/Maesteg/Aberkenfig area. I have found marriages for a James Price to a Mary AND a Margaret unfortunately, both before Ann was born.   Also, Mary Ann Davies of Aberkenfig who had gypsy links is in my tree.

Still cannot locate, don't know if this will help any, but did find 'Fronwen'  See link.

In 1881 there is a Thomas Davies and wife Margaret at Fronwen Tce,  although no Howell.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/03e0/

Looked at previous/later census for this family and cannot find a connection, but at least you can locate area, 1891 the area is RG12/4452/42/page 45....possibly search by page for Fronwen Row

Also a map you may find useful

http://www.jlb2005.plus.com/wales/tallis/maps/gla.htm

The only marriage on freebmd I could find for a Howell Davies & Hannah Phillips is:

Marriages Dec 1876

Davies  Howel    Pontardawe  11a 831
Evans  Evan     Pontardawe  11a 831
JEFFRIES  Margaret     Pontardawe  11a 831
Phillips  Hannah     Pontardawe  11a 831

This maybe a red herring...possibly they did not marry each other or it could be a seperate couple? Maybe a full search of BMD may throw some light on another marriage in the Bridgend area.

Another possible is to see if you can locate any other bapt. for children of this couple...scroll to Llangeinor, have found Ron to be very helpful in the past, he also has records for the Bridgend area.

http://home.clara.net/daibevan/LookupExch/GLA.html

When searching for areas, a tip is to put 'Genuki' into google followed by the placename you seek, and then top link has nearby places

Another tip for the surname is that they maybe Davies/Davis/David in my experience.  I usually search Davi* it brings up any differences.

Good luck, hope this helps

Hi Susan!

Annie Thomas (1880) was born to Morgan (Rees) Thomas (1848) and Mary Hawkins (1851) at Croft House, Cymdda (Nr Sarn & Aberkenfig).

She had 7 sibiling that I know of.  Her brother Morgan (1874) married Elizabeth Barwick (1877) and they had a daughter Lillian Thomas (1900).  I know this because Lillian was my grandfathers mother.   Lillian and my grandfather John Morgan were also born at Croft House in the Cymdda.

I'm back to 1804 on the Hawkins side.

Also, two of Annie's brothers, Rees Thomas & David Thomas died in the Parc Slip explosion in 1892.  Here's the link for the death roll, there are some Davies' on their also.  http://www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/deathrolls/ParkSlip.htm (ftp://http://www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/deathrolls/ParkSlip.htm)

Please email me if I can help you with any other information.  lwoolls@gmail.com

Hi Susan!

Congratulations on Jack Morgan and moving back to the UK.  I'm currently living in Chicago and also hope to relocate back to Wales sometime soon.

Howell Davies?!  I'm sure that rings a bell from looking at the census records last night...  I will have to check.  According to my mum, One of the Morgan's built the houses in the Cymdda and I know they also built 4 cottages, also known as Bryn Cottages (now) on Bryncoch (sometimes spelt brincoch).

Keeping the naming thing going is great.  My grandad, who decends from Morgan Thomas (1874) was also called John Morgan (Jack) Hurcombe.  It would be great to hear from you when you have some more time and get organised.  You have my email.

Best regards,

Larisssa

Hi Larissa

Getting a bit more sorted out but doubt if we willever be straight. Now need a bigger house, bought this on with just me, John and baby Jack. We are now 5 ! and 2 houses worth of furniture and stuff crammed into one house.

UPDATE on the DAVIES'
Found them on the 1911 census, says he was born in Mydrim, Carmarthenshire !
I know there are a lot of DAVIES' in Wales but 2 Howell's father and son born the same years as mine?
Then got in touch with a cousin of my F-in-L not spoken to before, she has a small family bible and it says in there he was born in Mydrim.
Found him in Carmathen, his father Howell  b 1840, Kilrherdin or Cirherdin. farmer the same.
Mother Mary b 1840, Trelech, Carmarthen.

Siblings
Thomas 1864
Philip 1865
Rosamond 1867
Anne 1870
John 1871
Joseph 1873
Davis 1874
Gwynne 1875
Mary 1878
Elizabeth 1880
and my Howell 1883 :o)

Luckily only got Howell's birth cert from Bridgend wrong, no wonder I couldn't get any further.
got most of the census returns.
Will start plodding through.
Howell's mum's family apparently lived at Croft House, Bridgend, so Howell jnr has moved at some point.
Hope to speak to you soon.
