Do you know when they were born?  What's the age given on the death certificate?

Do you know if they had any children?  Halliday children born India, living in Lancashire would be quite unusual, I'd have thought, assuming the children returned to Blighty with their parents.

There is a James Halliday on the 1851 census in Preston (HO107/2266, fol. 125, p. 29)

1 Clarence Street

James Halliday, head, mar, 54, silk weaver, born Ireland
Mary Halliday, wife, mar, 54, born Ireland
Elizh do, daur, unm, 28, reeler(?), do
Mary do, do,unm, 26, do, do
William do, son, unm, 21, factory worker, do
Andrew do, do, unm, 19, weaver, do
James Halliday, do, unm, 16, Factory Worker, do
William Turner, son-in-law, mar, 24, silk weaver, do
(and then the Turner family)

I suspect this isn't your James Halliday though - based on my experience that second wives/husbands tend not to be exactly the same age and from the same place.  This looks more to me like a family that came over from Ireland together after 1835.

There's another James Halliday on the 1851 census at Walton on the Hill (could count as Preston today, if it's the Walton I'm thinking of - less certain about back then), but I think he's too young to be yours (this one's b. c. 1809)

On the 1841 census, in Harding (?) Court, Liverpool (HO107/555, book 3, fol. 6, p. 5), I can see a James Holliday, age 35, a shoemaker, with (presumably) spouse Anne (age 25) and (possibly) daughter Margaret (but Margaret is born Lancashire, not India, though with rounding it might just work)

Also on the 1841 census, in Yorkshire St, Wardleworth, Rochdale is a James Holliday, age 55, ? draper, born Scotland, with wife, Ann (age 46), born lancs and six children aged between 12 and 25, all born Lancashire.  Unlikely to be your man if he was in India 1818-1831.

The 1861 census has a James Halliday (transcribed Hallida, but there's definitely someting after the a) widowed, aged 73, Chelsea out pensioner on Lancaster Rd, Preston.

His place of birth is Godstone, Surrey.

RG9/3137 ed52 fol132 p12.

Is this your chap?

The chap is in Bretforton, Worcestershire in 1851.

HO107/2044 ed8 fol364 p28

James Holliday, Head, Widr, 63, Chelsea Out Pensioner, Surry, Godstone
William Allchurch, Son-in-law, Mar, 20, Butcher, Worcester Bretforton

It looks a very good match with what you had already.

Have only just discovered Rootschat while researching family history etc.  Came across your posts.  I have quite a lot of info on your James Baldwin Holliday.  In fact, I have a letter written by him to his parents while he was in India.  He had married Anne Potter by that time and had had three of his children (Isabella, Eleanor and Sarah) (only two surviving) by that time (1825).  I am descended from his first daughter, Isabella, who was my great great grandmother.  Isabella married George Smith in Worcester, St. Martin, in October 1845 Sarah married William Hayes Allchurch in Bretforton in 1849.

They had another three children, Maria, Henry and James Baldwin, but I believe only Maria survived for any length of time.  Their last son was born May 1835 and died in Feb 1836, and Anne died in September that same year.

There is much more!

Yes, am in Australia - so can supply much more info on the Smiths after they arrived here, but would love to find more earlier info.  All I know is that Isabella married George Smith 15 Oct 1845 in Worcester St. Martin.  Have not yet found what children they had, but believe it was their son, George, who came to Oz.

Would love any more info on the Smiths that you may have!  I have fairly good details for Smiths from 1879 on - so you can see, I do have quite a gap.

I noticed in your summary of James Baldwin, you mentioned a child, George.  I had not found him before, so will add him to the family.  I also noticed that you missed Henry - he was born in Bretforton in 1821 died and buried there in Mar 1836.

You might also like to add to your info that Anne Potter was also in the Army in Meerut India when they were married (probably a nurse).  I am certain of this as I have their original marriage certificate.

Hi

This is quite an old thread, so I may not hear from any of you, but I've just discovered Roots Chat, so I though I'd give it a go!

I am descended from Sarah Holliday, who married William Hayes Allchurch in 1849.  I would be really interested in any information that you can give me on the family - especially details of the letters that James Baldwin Holliday wrote to his parents while in India.

I've not found Sarah on the 1951 census either - her widowed father and husband were living together at that time.  However, her first child died around the time of the census - I wonder if she was visiting friends/other relatives for comfort at the time?  I will keep searching....

Hi - I'm happy to share information.  Since that old post I have found a lot of information about the family - I am descended from Isabella, Sarah's sister.  I can send you a transcription of the letter James wrote from India (Isabella and Sarah's father) as well as a scanned image of the letter.  Thankfully my grandfather had the letter framed between two sheets of glass, so it's been preserved.  It's only damaged where someone (back in the early 1800's I suppose) took the stamps off.  It would probably be best if you contact me directly by email to *
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers,
Nicki

Hi Lin

Lovely to hear from another long lost relative!!  Are you descended from Isabella or Sarah?

I'm now trying to find out what happened to Sarah's husband - William Hayes Allchurch as he was living in a workhouse in 1911 and died in 1912, even though he had family living near by.  Do you have any information...? Or even information about the family further back?
