Hello all,
I am new to this site and am in need of some advice regarding my great grandfather John Boon.
I have found him on the 1891 and 1901 census living in Brighton but his birthplace is shown as London. He cannot be found on the 1881 anywhere in the country. There are a family of Boons living in Nelson Row on the 1871 census with a John Boon of the right age (11) but giving his birthplace as Brighton. I have his marriage certificate to Eliza Granger which shows his father was also named John and was a coach painter and deceased by 1886, the date of John Boon junior's wedding in Brighton.
Neither Brighton register office nor the GRO have any entry for a John Boon born in London or Brighton between 1859 and 1861 with a father also named John. I have come to a dead end and any suggestions or information would be invaluable after 8 months of looking for a record of his birth. Many kind people on other sites have sent me family records dating back to the 1700's on the Boon family but until I can establish my grandfather's parents and birthplace for certain I cannot link my tree with any other Boons.
I would love to search Sussex records but now live in Nottingham although I am Sussex by birth.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this message.

Hi there Pam
Unfortunately I have very little info on Brighton at the present moment - although I do visit the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes on a regular basis to do research both for family / friends and this forum.
If you give me what you know, will try to verify it from the records on my next visit.

Hello Chris, I have been looking for the birth record of John Boon for months now. All I know for certain is that he was born c1860 in either London or Brighton, he was a fruit hawker/greengrocer by trade, father was also named John, deceased by 1886 and a coach painter by trade , John junior married Eliza Granger in Brighton in 1886 and died aged 40 in 1902. From census results and certificates he seems to have lived in the Albion Street and Richmond Buildings area of Brighton most of his adult life. I am hoping to get to Lewes during my forthcoming visit to Sussex but have many other places to visit so I don't know how much I can fit in in the 3 full days I have before returning to Notts on Friday. My brother and sister-in-law have thrown a spanner in the works by producing their first child a month premature this morning, Alicia Abbott weighed three pounds fifteen ounces. She will be in hospital for a few days, so as present family must come before the past I must see her at East Surrey hospital on one of my days off.
Any help you are able to give me will be much appreciated.
Many thanks..................Pam

Hi there
I have just dug my fiche viewer out of the attic to look at the 1851 census transcription for Brighton.
It is probably small comfort I know, but unfortunately, there were no Boon's in Brighton in 1851

Hi Chris,
Thanks for looking for the Boons, my trip down south was no more fruitful either. I know there was a Boon family in 1871 in Brighton but 20 years is a long time.
I think I might have to start looking in London now.
Regards............Pam

Hi Pam, I came across your entry re John Boon for Apr 2004 so not sure whether you have managed to track him down yet?
I have run a search on a reliable BMD database and it has come up with a John Henry Boon b. 1861 in London (Pancras Vol 1b Page 102). Not sure if this is the right JB as on record of marriage to Eliza, only John is used?
There are a few other avenues to search but I will wait to hear back from your before proceeding in case you have already found JH since 2004?
