Hello :)
My name is Kirsten McTavish and I have just joined. I am looking for information about Alice Cameron and John Henry possibly from Ayrshire (Dumfries area) or Ireland. Their son Samuel Henry was born abt. 1854/55 and married Catherine Morton in Glasgow 1882. However, though I have their marriage certificate, I cant make out where Samuel was born.
I am also looking for information abt. Archibald Mac/McTavish (1711-1778)born possibly on Mull, though that is not certain. He married Jean Campbell (1716-?1763) and lived with his family on Mull where he was a Minister for abt. 40 years. I am unable to find out who Archibald's parents were and exactly where he was born. Hope someone can help me. In advance, many thanks.

Hello Kirsten
I checked out for a Samuel Henry on the 1881 Census to see if I could find him and that would give where he was born. His marriage record will give where he is living at the time of marriage but not where he was born. Where was he living and what was his occupation? The names HENRY and HENDRY come up together on the 1881 Census search unless you ask for an exact name search:

Hello Patricia
Sorry about the delay in answering you but I had problems with my computer. Samuel C Henry was a house painter to trade and got married in 1882 to Catherine Morton at 46 Carrick Street, Glasgow, so what you have given me fits in. Would there be an 1861 Cencus in Dumfries which would show him still living at home with his parents??

Hi Kirsten
There is an 1861 Census but its not indexed yet. It's due to be on the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk site by the end of the summer when you should be able to find Samuel and his family.

Hello Mike,
Many thanks for the information. Unfortunately it is not one of mine but I have sent it on to Cathy McTavish as I think it might be one of hers. It is surprising if you leave names long enough someone usually has an answer. This is the second time I have been contacte through Roots chat with information that is helpful. Once again, many thanks.
Kirsten :)

Hi Mike
I thought it might be hers. I wish anyone would come up with some information on mine, the Rev Archibald MacTavish. At the moment he is a very solid brick wall. I live in hope!!! :)

Have you checked the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae? This contains brief biographies of all ministers of the Church of Scotland since the Reformation. It is available at many libraries, and the LDS has it on microfilm or microfiche, I'm not sure which.

Hello
Yes I have a lot of the information about Rev. Archibald MacTavish from the "Fasti", but unfortunately his parents and where he was born is not mentioned there. One of his sons and several grandsons are also in the Fasti. Have tried the Universities where they were educated but they were unable to help. So, at the moment, I am stuck. ???

Hi Kirsten
Have found a possible entry for your Samuel on the 1861 census (the only one I could find born in Dumfries):
Residence: 31 English St, Dumfries.
Head: John HENRY
Born: abt 1810, Ireland
Occ: Freestone Broker
Spouse: Alice
Born: abt 1826, Ireland
Son: Samuel
Born: abt 1851, Dumfries, Scholar
Daughter: Alice
Born: abt 1854, Dumfries, Scholar
Hope this ties in something else you have.

Hi there. My Archibald was born 1711 and died 1777, so I don't think there is a match as I have no McTavishs in the Skipness area at all. It would have been great if we had a match, but unfortunately not. Thanks for letting me know anyway.

Hi Kirsten & Mike -
Just came across your thread when searching 'Garthbeg' & McTavish's. Can I ask if the Cathy you are referring to is on Rootschat? Thank you.
