Title: Death of Henry Irons
Post by: SarahH on Sunday 04 May 08 18:16 BST (UK)
I was wondering if anyone can help me, I'm looking for the death of a Henry Irons, born in Kingsthorpe in 1832. The last census I can find him in is 1881, where he is living in Northampton as a Gardener.

There is a possible match in the 1901 census, he is listed as being at the Northampton District Workhouse, but he gives his age as 62, which would give him the birth year of 1839. Not impossible I know, but I can't really confirm its him.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it!

Hi Sarah,

He's still there in 1891 anyway:

RG12/1196 132 11
Northampton St Sepulchre
N° 6 Ct Bath Street

Henry Irons, head, mar, 58, Gardener, b. Kingsthorpe
Elizabeth Robinson, lodger, s, 50, Housekeeper, b. Coore?

 :)

It's a bit odd that the age is so much out in 1901 (and that he's become a bootmaker!) but then I can't find another candidate for the man in the workhouse on previous census!

Hi Sarah

Do you have him in the census 1841 upwards at all so we can see who his
parents are.

Yes, mother is Eliza Palmer (b. 1802 Northampton) and father is William Irons (b.1796 Yelvertoft). He married Mary Ann Corby in 1853.

In 1881 he is living with his mother, while Mary Ann is living with her father. Both state they are married. In 1891 Mary Ann is living as a lodger with William Horton, and she still states she is married. Both are in the Northampton area.

Super, thanks for that.

Henry is listed as a Boot Maker in 1871 and a Shoe Maker in the 2 census' prior to that so it does fit. Its just the age which is making me wary.

Hi Sarah

I have been looking through quite a few records I have of burials but no sign of Henry (although not at all complete).

Maybe he was buried in a Churchyard rather than a cemetery.

To be honest, I can't see him being buried in a churchyard. But I guess its worth considering as you never know. ;)

Thanks for looking.

I don't suppose you could look up a William Irons as well, its his father. I have him being born around 1796, and from what I can gather he died before 1841 in Northampton (his last 4 children were born there). Thanks in advance.

Hi Sarah

I had already looked for William and Eliza's at the same time in the resources I had.

Sorry no joy.

Just so you know what I looked at.

My own St Giles and St Edmunds and St Sep's gravestones images & lists.

My own Index of General Hospitals burials.

Alan Clarke's burial index.

Kingsthorpe Church and graveyard extension images & lists.

The Northampton General Cemetery was not open then but looked after for Henry and Eliza.

So very strange but of course there are quite a few Churches that he may have been buried in.

Thank you. I will try and do some more research, this family line is causing me no end of questions rather than answers.
