My g-g-grandparents John CARR and Elizabeth CARR (DWYER) arrived in Dunedin in 1874 from Cork, Ireland with their children Mary 17, Michael 16 (my g-grandfather), Anne 15, Thomas 13, Daniel 10, Lucy 9, John Francis 6 and Eliza 8 mths. So far I've traced them all ... except Thomas.
I know he was in Wellington in 1887 when he was (possibly) the informant at the birth of his niece Mary Teresa CARR and he was still alive when his father John died in 1897 as he is mentioned in the will.
John CARR (senior) worked as a crossing keeper for the Railways in Dunedin. Son Michael worked for NZ Loan & Mercantile - first in Wellington, then Gore. Daniel was a torpedoman in the NZ Artillery and died of dysentery in Wellington in 1898 and John Francis CARR was possibly a telegraph operator in Wellington and died in 1934. Mary died not long after their arrival in Dunedin, Annie married and moved to London and Lucy never married and died in 1907.
But what happened to Thomas? The only Thomas CARRs I've found so far were all CofE and my CARR family were most definitely Catholic.
Any suggestions gratefully received ;D

Hi Fiona
But what happened to Thomas? The only Thomas CARRs I've found so far were all CofE and my CARR family were most definitely Catholic.
So what Thomas' have you found, and ruled out, to save us re-doing what you have already found as there are probates, Burial records, etc. ?

So far I've searched burials in Dunedin & Wellington (as those are the only two areas I know for sure Thomas lived) but no matches (apart from the aforementioned C of E ones).
Probates ... have searched Archway but didn't find any that looked probable.
With so little information to go on this is a bit of the stab in the dark I'm afraid:(
Perhaps this CARR may have to drive off into the sunset unfound :)

Had another look at Archway after your suggestion Bren - and this is the one I think is possible - the rest are all a bit late.
CARR Thomas Edward - Waikino 1909 - 1909
BBAE 1569 Box245 7341
Unless he was really the "black" sheep and became a Methodist minister
CARR Thomas Goodwill - Auckland - Methodist Minister
BBAE 1570 Box291 552/1935
I'm off the Ak Archives this Friday (or next) so will dig out these and have a look (and can do other Auckland lookups if any Rootchatters want to send them to me - I'll have a digital camera for the day so seems a pity to waste the resource ;))
Thanks again

Thanks Bren :) At this point in time even being able to eliminate one Thomas Carr is a huge stepping stone!
Cheers

Yes sometimes the only way to move forward is to prove conclusively who doesn't belong.
Good luck with your search.
