Hi Everyone,
I'm skipping from branch to branch like a crazy cat up a tree...I'm now looking for birth records for my great grandmother Elizabeth Ellen Birch. Here's what I know (or atleast think I know):
:) She's buried in Australia in buried 8 Jun 1968, age: 89yr - this I'm sure of - therefore making her DOB about 1879
:) She's from Liverpool (according to my father)
:) She married Peter Peters from Wales in 1908
I'd like to know a more accurate date and place of birth and if she appears in any census records that could give me clues about her family.
Thank you so much.......Cheers...JJ :D

Hi JJ,
This is a possible girl in 1881:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=9224091
RG11/3701 23 41
Birth registration
Elizabeth Ellen Birch
Jun 1879 West Derby 8b 510
You'll need the marriage cert to prove that her father was Thomas though!
Elizabeth Ellen Birch - Peter Peters
Jun 1908 West Derby 8b 555
:)

Thanks very much Tati :D - by any chance does the family appear again in the 1891 & 1901 census??
You're right, I think I will get the marriage certificate and things might make a bit more sense - will have to check with dad to see if he already has it - but I don't think so.
Cheers...JJ :)

This needs checking, but is a possibility:
Deaths:
Thomas Birch Jun 1884 W Derby age 42
Jane Birch Mar 1884 W Derby age 38
RG12/2917/141/10
Elizabeth Birch, 12, living in an orphan asylum in Liverpool.
In 1901 she is a domestic servant in Cheshire (RG13/3384).

Ohhhhhh, that's very exciting Richard (if it is my relatives that is!), will have to do some serious confirming...although just had a chat to mum (who knew my great grandmother) and she says she remembers her telling her that she was in an orphanage....so this sounds like it could be on the right track!
One question....where Elizabeth is listed as an orphan (I assume in 1891), is her brother Joseph with her...he was 4 in the 1881 census so would be 14 (I suppose he could be out working at that age)...just a thought really!
Thank you so much for looking this up for me Richard.... :D :D :D
Cheers....JJ

Took me ages to find them in 1871!
1871
RG10/1013 57 30
Western Heights, Kent
The Shaft Barracks
Jane Brich, wife, mar, 24, Soldier's wife, b. Scotland
Richard Brich, son, 4, soldier's son, b. Lancashire Liverpool
William T Brich, son, 2, Soldier's son, b. Kent, Hythe, England
Robert C Brich, son, 4 months, soldier's son, b. Kent, Dover, England
and
RG10/1013 48 11
Western Heights, Kent
The Shaft Barracks
Thomas Brich, head of family, mar, 31, Over Sergeant, b. Lancashire, Liverpool, England
:)
(looking closer at the 1881 census image, their surname looks like Brich as well! BMD say Birch however)

Thanks Tati :) - I was just about to ask about the 1871 census...you read my mind!
How on earth did you find it with the dodgy spelling - is it likely that it was a spelling error or is it usual to change their name along the way!!
Also, any idea why Thomas was listed separately to his family?
Thanks so much (again)....Cheers...JJ :D
-
Yes, Thomas was listed separately, along with the other soldiers :)
Wish Jane could make up her mind about her birthplace!
There's a marriage
Mar 1866 Medway 2a 497
Thomas Birch to possibly Jane Payne but I have no idea how likely it is.
Robert C's birth:
Robert Charles Birch
Jun 1871 Dover 2a 849
I think I can see him in Cheshire in 1901, married to a Sarah (Sarah A Rodgers if the 1892 marriage I found is correct).
Still searching for the boys in 1891!
-
This could be Joseph, as he's not obvious in 1891:
Death Dec 1890 Joseph Birch age 14 Liverpool
(Birth could be either Joseph Birch Sep 1876 or Joseph Joseph Birch Jun 1876)

Tati & Richard....you're both fabulous!! Thanks so much for all this information, it's really interesting...I hadn't done much at all with this particular branch, my dad will be thrilled!
Poor Elizabeth had a rough time, with the death of both parents and her brother not too many years later....
Thanks again....... :D :D :D :D :D
Cheers...JJ
